Do-it-yourself jigsaw from a sewing machine. Jigsaw for sawing out of a sewing machine. #8 Sergey Viktorovich

Here is the general scheme of the jigsaw machine.

I had a homemade machine tool, I have already briefly written about it. Since I am a furniture maker, I made it from the remnants of LMDF. Cheap and cheerful :). I did not care at all about the appearance, as long as I worked. And he did a good job! On it, I understood all the nuances of sawing out of solid wood, such as walnut, oak, ash. Everything would be fine, but at the drive, and they were served by a Krees 350W construction jigsaw. 15 years of experience! At the drive, the speed regulator has "covered itself", it turns on immediately to the maximum and immediately tears the file. I did not find a native proprietary regulator. What kind of regulators I have not tried, and dimmers for chandeliers and regulators from shv. machines, vacuum cleaners. The desired result, namely a wide range of adjustment, I could not achieve.

The photo shows the principle of operation of the jigsaw. the construction jigsaw transmits oscillatory movements to the rocker, on which, in turn, the file is fixed.

In the end, I gave up. The Moor has done his job, the Moor must go. I decided to buy a new jigsaw drive. All Chinese versions of jigsaws are not suitable, adjustment on them is one name. I found what I was looking for in the Makita brand store. Jigsaw 450 W. Wide range of adjustment, and does not yell like Chinese jigsaws! Quietly works!

Here is my new drive, Makita 4327.

I found a new drive, but it didn’t work to put it in place of the old one, the height is not suitable. I decided, rather than redo it, it is better to make a new one, taking into account the elimination of the inconveniences identified in the process of working on the old one.

1. Increase the clearance from the file to the frame (on the old one it was 27 cm.) For this you need an elongated rocker.

2. Increase the vertical stroke of the saw blade for good chip removal. (on the old one, the saw stroke is 18mm.)

3. Appearance! Schaub was not ashamed to take pictures. :)

And so! machine is ready!

Here is my new machine!

The clearance from the file to the frame is 45cm! 30mm vertical stroke! Dream!

Trial cutting. The result is excellent! The Makita regulator does a great job. The machine works by noise like a household sewing machine.

One of the most convenient stationary machines for figured sawing, has a very simple design. Craftsmen make such devices from a wide variety of materials and tools. One of the most suitable bases for making a desktop jigsaw is a regular sewing machine. At the same time, the device does not have to be new or have an electric motor. In more detail about the principle of operation and the manufacture of a stationary jigsaw, we will describe later in the article.

The principle of operation of the jigsaw

Before proceeding with the study of the manual for assembling your own stationary apparatus for cutting, you should delve into its structure and a little, into the history of origin.

The first electric jigsaw was born in 1946, when engineer Albert Kaufmann had the idea to replace the sewing machine needle with a thin file. For its time, the invention was very original and received well-deserved public attention. Scintilla AG was engaged in the production and sale of jigsaws until it was bought by Bosch in 1954. To date, the patents for the invention have long expired and a wide variety of companies have begun to manufacture jigsaws.

Modern stationary jigsaws are functional devices assembled from precise and reliable parts. At first glance, the models presented for sale may seem incredibly difficult to manufacture, but they are based on the same old principle of operation, albeit with a more optimized mechanism. By assembling a jigsaw from a sewing machine, we are essentially returning to the origins of this invention, partially supplementing it with modern technologies.

The design itself, which tensions and drives the saw blade, is quite simple and consists of a special frame and a crank mechanism. The movable frame consists of upper and lower arms of equal length, fixed to the rack. A file is installed on the front side of the frame, and on the opposite side a spring that performs tension. To move the file up and down, makes the crank mechanism connected to the motor. A more visual and detailed embodiment of the above process can be seen in the following drawing.

Electric jigsaw from a sewing machine

The beauty of making a stationary jigsaw from a sewing machine lies in minimizing precise work. A reliable crank assembly is already connected to the needle mount, which is quite simply converted to a file. In fact, in order to retrain the device, it is necessary to arrange a tension mechanism, on the opposite side of the installed saw blade. In detail about how to make a jigsaw from a sewing machine, we will tell and show further.

As an illustrative example, the Soviet sewing machine "Tula" with an electric drive will be redesigned. Based on this manual, it will be possible to convert most other old models into a machine. If you have a different machine (which is likely), the parts and their location may vary. In this case, the main thing is to approach the matter judiciously, with logic and use the tips below according to the circumstances. So, for work you will need:
  1. Sewing machine
  2. Nut with bolt (full thread)
  3. Spring or flexible metal plate (for tensioner)
  4. Metal corners (2 pcs.)
The components listed above do not claim absolute accuracy and are provided as a guide only. The dimensions of the required parts should be selected based on their capabilities, focusing on the examples in the video below.

By instruments:

  • Drill (with a set of drills for metal)
  • Bulgarian (with a disk for metal)
  • pliers
  • Screwdriver
At the first stage of assembly, it is recommended to remove all unnecessary elements from the sewing machine, leaving only the crank mechanism and the needle holder connected to it. To set the tension of the file, it is necessary to remove the shuttle located under the needle. If a motor is built into the housing, it should be left if it is to be used as the main drive. If the power of the regular one is not enough for you, you can remove it and connect a third-party electric drive.

If you will be using thin files, up to #2, for sawing, a standard hole in the top mount will suffice. For wider blades, a larger hole will need to be drilled.

The bottom mount can be made from a conventional bolt. To do this, you need a drill, a drill for metal by 3-4 mm, and a tap for threading this diameter. The resulting structure should look like this.

There are 2 types of sewing machine installation: above the table and under the table. In the variant we are considering, the device is located on top, when the tension mechanism comes from below. The author of the product abandoned the spring tension method in favor of a metal plate cut from a hacksaw blade. A hole drilled in the center of the plate serves as a place for attaching the saw blade. The strip of steel itself is installed in improvised grooves made from corners.

On the this stage, the assembly of a homemade jigsaw machine from a sewing machine is considered complete. The device is able to easily cut wooden blanks up to 20 mm thick. With a more advanced tension system, a good spring, and a powerful motor, it can easily take higher values. The detailed assembly process, with the author's comments, is presented in the video below.

Altering the place where the needle is attached to the file

Far from everyone and not always there is a need to carry out only figured cuts. More often, a jigsaw is used to achieve controlled cuts of straight and round shapes. In such cases, a thin nail file will be too slow, but a standard jigsaw blade will cope with the task quite quickly. And everything would be fine, but only such a saw will not fit into a standard needle holder. So you need to reactivate the logical hemisphere and “pump” your homemade jigsaw machine from a sewing machine. To do this, by the way, is quite simple.

As an example, let's take a product from the following author, although this problem was also solved at the end of the previous guide. The answer lies in the stitching of the seat for tightening the needle. For this purpose, a grinder with a metal disc is used. The shank of the file itself also needs to be sharpened so that it passes into the hole in the fastener element with a bolt. Detailed examples are shown in the photo above, below, also in the video.

Other versions

If the above products did not suit you for any reason, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with two similar videos. Jigsaws from a sewing machine, assembled by the authors of the following materials with their own hands, have the same basis, but different implementation features. The following videos will be useful as a source of ideas for making your own unique machine.

Desktop jigsaw - equipment for cutting, sawing curly parts from various materials. Its feature is the possibility of cutting while maintaining the integrity of the outer contour of the workpiece. Depending on which file is installed on the structure, the machine can process natural wood, its derivatives, plastic bases or metal.

The device is indispensable when performing construction and repair work, production of furniture, souvenirs. Often equipment is purchased for domestic purposes. Sometimes it is irrational to buy a factory unit: you can make a jigsaw yourself. The photo shows the design of the tool.

Device and principle of operation

The stationary factory sample includes a desktop for a jigsaw, a unit with a cutting element is fixed on it, an electric drive installed under the table top and a crank mechanism. The tension unit is installed at the top or bottom of the machine. Many models of units allow you to cut material at different angles. This is necessary for the implementation of an oblique cut. Often, for convenience, rotary mechanism, stops, guides marking is applied. The length of the cut depends on the dimensions of the table, in most models it is 30–40 cm.

Power electric jigsaw may be small. For domestic purposes, a 150 W unit is sufficient.

An important element is the crank mechanism. It is responsible for the quality of the transmission of the engine torque to the forward-return movement performed by the cutting element in a vertical position.

A standard jigsaw tool is characterized by an oscillation frequency of up to 1000 per minute with an amplitude of 3-5 cm. In some samples, the speed of processing various materials is adjusted. In most cases, a saw up to 35 cm long is installed on such a tool, which allows cutting parts up to 10 cm thick.

In order for the cutting element to serve for a long time without breakages, cracks, it is necessary to provide it with optimal tension along the entire length. For this, helical and spring springs are used. As additional option on factory devices, an air pump is provided to remove sawdust from the cutting line. Useful block with drilling machine, however, for each additional node you need to pay extra.

Assembly instructions

A jigsaw is made from a refrigerator compressor, an ordinary drill. You can set the cutting blade in motion with the help of an engine from washing machine. Another option is to use manual electric jigsaws, old sewing machines. The figure shows a design drawing.

How to remake a manual jigsaw

First of all, the table is made. For this, a sheet of thick plywood or metal is used. Through holes are cut in it for the cutting blade, fasteners. Through them, the manual unit placed from below is fixed to the supporting structure. Next, the jigsaw table is fixed on any stable wooden table. Guide rails are added.

If necessary, the machine can be quickly disassembled.

The standard device is equipped with springs that provide the file with the required level of tension. You can not do without a rocker, one of its edges is under spring tension, the second provides attachment to the cutting element of the jigsaw. You can also clamp the web between two guide rollers.

Before starting work on a homemade jigsaw, the pendulum stroke must be turned off.

Machine from a sewing machine

A jigsaw from a sewing machine contains a saw blade travel controller provided with a speed switch on the equipment.

For manufacturing, the weaving mechanism is removed. In most designs, it is placed below. The bolts are unscrewed, the cotter pin is knocked out, the drive shaft leading to the thread weaving unit is removed.

Then the upper protective panel opens, the groove along which the needle moved expands to the file width parameters. Jigsaw saws are slightly modified: they are cut according to the size of the longest needle that could be installed on the machine. In order not to make an adapter for fixing the cutting element to the seat, grind off the upper incisors, make the lower part of the blade sharp. A cutter is installed in the needle holder. After that, they start cutting blanks.

The idea to make a jigsaw came to me many years ago, but I brought it to life much later - when someone threw out a faulty sewing machine manufactured by the Podolsk plant fell into my hands.

From the "insides" of the machine, he took only the main shaft and the "needle bar" assembly, and dismantled the rest of the parts. He cut off the front part of the platform, leaving only the thrust bearing under the L-shaped body. On the sandpaper, I grinded off all the tides on the lower surface. I drilled holes in the corners of the heel and through them I attached the inverted machine to the table top of the cabinet from below. By the way, I also used the pedestal from an old foot sewing machine. True, finding such a pedestal is perhaps more difficult than the machine itself, but it is not difficult to make it from a chipboard 20 mm thick. From above, the lid was closed with a steel sheet 1.5 mm thick (it can also be duralumin).

On the protruding end of the main shaft, I installed a pulley with a diameter of 80 mm for a V-belt drive (you can also take it from an old foot sewing machine, only it needs to be bored out under the V-belt) I installed a similar pulley, but with a larger diameter (100 mm) on the motor shaft. C) with a power of 180 W and a speed of 1350 per minute, together with a pulley, was used from an old washing machine

The electric motor was fixed on the lower platform of the pedestal, which was made of sufficiently strong bakelite plywood 20 mm thick, since there was no such platform-floor in the pedestal itself. In the platform, preliminarily, through the holes in the legs of the electric motor, I cut out oblong grooves - to move the motor in order to tension the drive belt. the sawing unit is difficult to manufacture, requiring some experience in working with metal. But it does not require precision (especially precise) execution, so you can also make its parts yourself, up to the file.

The sawing knot is shown in the figure. A mandrel with a slot made of a hexagon is put on the needle bar, which is fixed with locking screws. A file is inserted into the slot of the mandrel, on the shoulders of which a washer with a slot-like hole and a groove is first put on. did not break, a thrust roller assembly is provided. For this, a hole with dimensions of 65 × 13 mm is sawn in the lid. Above this hole, a plate is symmetrically attached to the cover with countersunk screws. A roller holder is installed under it. It is fixed with countersunk screws and a plate with two threaded holes. The plate must be flush with the surface of the lid, so you need to create a recess under the plate with a chisel.

The file is made of carbon steel, if there is no purchased one. The teeth are cut with a small file and needle files of the same shape as longitudinal hacksaw The teeth must be divorced, but since they are very small, it is almost impossible to use a special tool for this purpose. Therefore, the saw blade must be clamped in a small vise, then light bending blows should be applied through the tooth with a beard and hammer. Then the file is turned over and the rest of the teeth are bent in the same way After sharpening, the teeth must be hardened.

We independently remake an old sewing machine into a jigsaw.

There are many videos on the network about using old sewing machines in a new quality. To do this, in the body we leave only a crank, a vertical rod for attaching a needle, a flywheel with a groove for a belt drive. To rotate the flywheel, an electric drive for manual sewing machines is used. (A lyrical digression off topic: I purchased the drive 30 years ago to make an electric spinning wheel according to drawings from the Young Technician magazine. Wool from a white sheep was spun on the spinning wheel and a winter sweater was knitted. e. disappeared). Foot pedal for speed control and electric motor in the picture below.

The Network Roll Review recommends the use of leaf springs with the point of application of force at the center of the long spring, or a block of coil springs with precise fixation of the lower edge of the file. A long leaf spring significantly increases the overall dimensions of the device. The coil spring unit is difficult to make at home. A scheme is chosen - a short spring fixed at one end.

A piece from an old metal meter was perfect for this. The stiffness of the spring can be adjusted by setting the number (stack) of springs and moving the latch along the spring. The use of a short spring complicates the attachment of the file, because. the free end of the spring describes a curved line, respectively, and the lower end of the file will also not move strictly vertically.

The existing round hole in the spring is bored out with a needle file for a rectangular hole according to the size of the saw blade fixing unit. The result was a knot swinging along the long axis of the spring. Fixing the node from below with a segment of the rod. Fixing the saw blade with a screw. When changing the file, the knot does not fall out. the screw clamping the file does not allow from above, and from below the axis of rotation at a small angle.

The manufacture of the attachment point for the upper end of the file is not difficult and is clear from the photo.

The next feature of using sewing machines for making a jigsaw is a small stroke of the working rod - about 25 mm. For reference: the working part of purchased files is approximately 85 mm with a total length of 120 mm files. It is possible to eliminate this shortcoming. To do this, the body of the machine is installed through a gasket (I have a thickness of 45 mm - three plates of furniture chipboard,) Under the working rod there are three gaskets of 15 mm each. As the working part of the file wears out, one gasket is removed and so on.

When using files (notched saw teeth on piano wire with a diameter of 1 mm for a length of about 30 mm), it is not necessary to remove the spacers. Since the machine is quite old and worn out, i.e. rumbles and to eliminate noise, rubber shock absorbers are fixed on the base racks. The first works - plywood material 3mm of good quality.
