Prayers to Spyridon of Trimifuntsky

Upon the return of his uncle from the pilgrimage, Nicholas the Wonderworker, having asked for the blessing of the bishop, sails on a ship to Palestine. Even when landing, he warns of an impending storm. With unceasing prayers, he pacifies the elements, and then resurrects a sailor who has crashed on the ship's deck. In all the settlements where travelers stopped, his abilities to heal diseases and comfort the desperate are manifested.

Upon arrival in the Holy Land, Nicholas the Wonderworker lived in the Orthodox village of Beit Jala. One night, the saint set out to pray in the temple. The locked doors opened by themselves, and Nikolai was able to pray. He intended to remain in the Holy Land, completely withdraw from people and devote himself to the service of the Lord, but, by a higher command, he returned to his homeland, where he continued to labor in the monastery called Holy Zion. Trembling seized Nicholas the Wonderworker, who heard a voice announcing the need to serve the people. A new vision of the Son of God foreshadowed to bring spiritual enlightenment to people, heading the church council of all Lycia. From the Lord, as a gift, the saint allegedly received the Gospel, and from the Most Holy Theotokos he received an omophorion.

Having moved to the city of Mira, Nicholas the Wonderworker led an ascetic life, slept where he had to, could eat absolutely nothing, but he always attended all the services in the temple. After the death of the archbishop of the city of Myra, John, a council is held, at which a new head of the Lycian church is elected. The senior bishop had a vision that he needed to choose a person who would come to the church first in the morning for prayer, and his name would be Nikolai. The elder was waiting for the first person to pray, having come to the temple in the evening. Right after midnight, Nikolai entered the church, quietly and humbly answered the question of his name.

Elected Archbishop of the World of the Lycian Church, Nicholas the Wonderworker instructs himself to serve people, and not himself. His position made it possible to do good deeds no longer secretly, but to glorify Christianity and Jesus Christ. For himself, Saint Nicholas did not demand any blessings in life. Meekness and humility, a kind heart and lack of arrogance remained his main pillars. The simplest clothes and a single meal of lenten food in the evening, which he sometimes did not have time to take. Very often petitioners came to the shepherd's house, praying for help. Nicholas the Wonderworker protected the offended, fed the hungry, strengthened the spirit of the unfortunate.

It is a difficult time for Christianity. With the advent of Diocletian, the temples were destroyed, the divine literature was burned, the clergy were tortured. For the glorification of the name of the Lord, Archbishop Nicholas, along with many believers, ends up in prison, where he continues to lift his spirit and strengthen faith in Jesus Christ in order to be ready for trials for the faith. Having endured all the grave torments, he was returned to the flock by Equal-to-the-Apostles Constantine.

The next test in the life of Nicholas the Wonderworker was the struggle against the false teachings of Arius. For slapping him in the heat of righteous anger, Saint Nicholas was defrocked, the gospel and omophorion were taken away. The rightness of the Miracle Worker triumphed, and he was returned to the dignity.

In peaceful life, Nicholas performed many miracles to save the health and lives of parishioners. During the famine, he redirected grain merchants to the shores of Lycia. He reconciled the two belligerents during the rebellion in the city of Plakomat, then released the three innocent citizens of the city sentenced to death by the city governor Evstafiy. Appearing at the moment of execution, Nicholas the Wonderworker takes the sword from the executioner and frees those sentenced to death. The tsar's governors, who watched the execution, are imprisoned according to a slander. Seeing with their own eyes how prayer works, they begin to call for help Nicholas the Wonderworker. The prayer was heard, and on the same night, Equal-to-the-Apostles Constantine had a dream in which the voice of Archbishop Nicholas demanded the release of the governor, threatening to deprive him of power. The case of the convicted was reviewed and the innocent were released.

The fame and rumors of people about the miraculous help and intercession of Nicholas the Wonderworker spread further and further. Ordinary sailors, caught in a storm, lost all opportunity to fight for their lives. All that was left was prayer, and then they called for the help of the Miracle Worker. At the same moment, Saint Nicholas appeared at the helm of their broken ship and led them to the house. Performing good deeds for people during his lifetime, after his repose, the Wonderworker hears all the prayers addressed to him.

The life of the man of God ended with a brief illness on December 6 (December 19 in the Gregorian calendar) 342. His relics did not succumb to decay and rested in the city of Peace. After the destruction and plunder of Lycia by the Saracens, the tomb remained in complete oblivion, there were only a few monks near it. On May 9 (May 22, Gregorian style), 1097, the relics of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker arrived in the city of Bari, in southern Italy, where they are still kept.

Nicholas the Wonderworker was recognized as a saint long before the Roman Catholic Church began to regulate canonization procedures in the late 10th century (at that time, local bishops canonized saints; in the late 1100s, canonization in the Roman Catholic Church became the responsibility of the Pope) . In fact, the holiness of Nicholas the Wonderworker significantly predates the schism of 1054 between the Eastern and Western churches.

Before the official canonization procedures, people honored those who were exemplars of the faith in their areas. As the saint's reputation grew outside the local area, the saint gained more and more widespread exposure.

The sailors who had a special relationship with Nicholas carried the news of this Saint along the coasts of the seas and rivers throughout the known world. So, many seaports and major river stops can boast a church or a chapel dedicated to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker.

200 years after his death, Nicholas the Pleasant was already recognized and revered in very significant ways. Back in the 6th century, Justinian I built a church in honor of St. Nicholas in Constantinople. The name of Nicholas the Wonderworker is included in the liturgy of the end of the 6th century, attributed to St. Zlatoust.

Nicholas was a Confessor - one who publicly confessed Christ in times of persecution, remaining faithful despite imprisonment, torture or exile. In the Middle Ages, St. Nicholas was glorified as a true holy people for the way he lived. Nicholas the Pleasant was no doubt an early example of a saint who was honored for witnessing his life. Nicholas was a saint whose life testified to God's work through public life, he lived doing the will of God. Nicholas the Wonderworker lived to old age and died peacefully. This may be one of the reasons why he was so popular: he was an example of how to live, not how to die, in a time of persecution.

Therefore, Nicholas the Pleasant has no date for formal canonization in the Catholic Church. Rather, the record shows the gradual spread of reverence and veneration for the Saint. He was included in the calendars of diocesan saints and eventually included in the normative calendars of the entire church, both eastern and western.

In 1968, the Roman Catholic calendar was revised.. The celebration of the ninety Saints, including Nicholas, became optional. This means that celebrating their feast days is not mandatory for faithful Catholics. However, Nicholas the Wonderworker, with all the Saints in this group, is still considered a real saint in the Roman Catholic Church.

A calendar reform with fewer universal holidays allows more local customs, holidays, and saints to receive special attention, as it relieves the entire Roman Rite Church of the need to observe saints who have no local, cultural, or ethnic connection. This calendar reform did not exclude Saint Nicholas from the list of saints, but only his feast day from the universal Roman liturgical calendar. This makes Saint Nicholas Day, 6 December, optional under Roman Catholic law.

Nevertheless, Nicholas the Wonderworker is rightly called a saint, and all Christians of the world revere him.

How Nicholas the Wonderworker is venerated in the Roman Catholic Church

For nearly 1,700 years, Nicholas the Wonderworker has been one of the most popular saints of the Church, both in the East and the West. The number of churches, chapels, religious institutions and altars dedicated to him throughout Christendom is incalculable. According to the new edition of Butler's Lives of the Saints, in England alone, about 400 churches are dedicated to him. He is the patron saint of Russia, Greece, Germany, and countless cities and regions throughout Christendom. Nicholas the Wonderworker is also the patron saint of children.

He was born into a Christian family in Patara, which is now Turkey. Nicholas became a priest and was eventually consecrated Bishop of Mira. Although his name does not appear on the oldest lists of bishops present at the Council of Nicaea, there is a strong tradition among the Greeks that he was there and even slapped Arius in the face when the archbishop was bold enough to claim that Jesus Christ was not the Second Person of the Most Holy One. The most popular story about Nicholas the Wonderworker that is still known today tells of his compassion for three poor young women. Their father had lost his fortune and with it all hope of providing a dowry for his daughters. To save them from poverty and the threat of having to support themselves as prostitutes, St. Nicholas threw bags of gold coins through the open window of a poor family's house so that each daughter would have enough to enter into a good marriage.

In the 11th century, the Seljuk Turks began to invade the territory of Byzantium. By 1084 Myra, the site of the tomb of Nicholas the Wonderworker, was in Muslim hands. Although the Turks did not desecrate the shrine, many Christians in the West considered it scandalous that the relics of St. Nicholas should be in the hands of the enemy. The Venetians planned to salvage the relics of the Saint, but in 1087 merchants from Bari in southern Italy arrived there first. Today, the relics of Nicholas the Wonderworker lie in the crypt of the great Romanesque basilica that the people of Bari built for the Saint, and pilgrims - Catholic and Orthodox - continue to visit the temple.

On December 6, on the day of memory of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, the patron saint of children, it is customary among Austrians, Germans, Swiss, Belgians and Dutch to give sweets and, possibly, a small gift to children. Thus, in the Catholic world, St. Nicholas Day is a holiday that has become a sweet prelude before Christmas.
