Making a stand

Sharp and uneven edges of holes must be processed with a file.

All edges of the stand are fastened with self-tapping screws. To do this, use pliers or a vice to bend the edge on each side of the metal sheet at an angle of 90°, drill holes for self-tapping screws and fasten the edges together. The edges of the plexiglass stand are fastened with glue.

Manufacturing of the cooling system

To gain access to the fans, one of the covers (preferably the top one) should be made removable. Attach the fan to the bottom cover of the stand with self-tapping screws or glue.

Assemble an electrical circuit to turn on the fan. A sequential circuit consisting of a fan, Molex, USB cable and switch. To check the operation of the circuit, first assemble it without soldering. After you are sure that everything works, you can solder the wires using solder, rosin and a soldering iron. After soldering, the connection points of the wires are wrapped with electrical tape. If you are going to use several fans, then you need to connect them in parallel.

Decorating the stand

Clean the surfaces of the stand from dirt and grease. Using scissors and a knife, cut out all the necessary holes in the self-adhesive film and carefully cover the stand on all sides. Tighten the wires with ties that match the color of your stand.

When cutting holes for the fan, cuts may occur. If this happens, then when covering the surfaces of the stand with film, place pieces of thin cardboard under it so that the holes look neat and the film does not tear on the sharp edges of the cuts.

Hello, friends. Summer is coming and it's time to think again about cooling our everyday gadgets - this article will focus on a laptop. If in a desktop computer the cooling issue can be solved with 10 options, then in a laptop you don’t have to choose. For additional cooling of laptops, stores offer cooling pads of various shapes and sizes, as well as in active and passive versions.

Let's figure out what an active and passive laptop stand means. A passive laptop stand is usually an aluminum or, less commonly, plastic plate on legs with many holes or a mesh in the middle, which raises the laptop above the table surface, which allows the laptop to freely suck in cool air from underneath it. Let me remind you that the air intake holes in laptops are located at the bottom, and hot air exits from the side. The size of the holes and their position on the side surfaces varies in different laptop models. But what remains unchanged is that the air intake is from below, the air outlet is from the side. Now what is an active stand? An active stand is essentially the same plate of aluminum or plastic with holes as in the passive version, but one large or several small fans are attached to the bottom of it, which force cool air onto the bottom of the laptop.

IMPORTANT! For best cooling, the fan should be placed directly under the intake vents of your laptop.

Active laptop stands can have several power options - from the mains (via a 12V adapter) and from a USB connector. In my homemade product, I tried both options, but having encountered certain difficulties, I settled on powering the stand from the mains via an adapter.

So, where did I start my homemade project? First, I walked around the house looking for materials and spare parts. It was found: a 120x120 cooler (in an old dusty case), scraps of a sheet of foamed PVC 5mm thick (used for making advertising signs), a USB extension cord (of which there were a dozen of them at home). Why did I choose foamed PVC instead of, say, a steel sheet (the wall of the system unit). Because this material is light and strong enough to support the weight of a laptop, and it is also easy to process and can be easily attached with a glue gun.

To begin with, I took a sheet of PVC and, placing the laptop on it, marked out a rectangle of the required size. I sawed off the excess with a regular metal jigsaw. By luck, the remaining piece was enough for two legs and two triangles (stiffening ribs).

Before cutting out the legs, I marked a hole for the fan, which I placed directly under the air inlet in the laptop. Why was this done? And so that the stand does not rest on the table with a fan, but stands on legs. Having drilled four holes with a 4mm drill for fasteners, I attached the fan, and then marked the legs so that the fan did not touch the table. Then I cut out the remaining parts and holes, after removing the fan.

How to properly position the legs on the stand. The laptop itself has 4 rubber feet. The legs of the stand should be directly underneath them. This will increase the strength of the structure. And so, the meta-glues are marked, the hot-melt gun is prepared for work, and while it is heating up, we use fine sandpaper to go over the places where the hot-melt adhesive is applied! This will improve the adhesion of the parts. Next, glue all the parts and screw the fan into place.

In a minute the stand is ready! All that remains is to connect the fan. At first I wanted to connect the fan to the laptop's USB port. I cut off the connector on the fan and stripped two wires:

Black (-) and Red (+).

Next, I cut off part of the USB extension cable and also stripped only 2 wires (black and red). Then I soldered red to red and black to black and insulated them with electrical tape. I could have ended there, but I was a little disappointed.

And so what is the point. The problem is that the fan is 12V, but as it turns out there is only 5V in the USB port. Therefore, the fan could not start spinning on its own and in order for it to work, it had to be pushed with a finger! This was not part of my plans, since this requires constantly lifting the laptop. After researching this problem on the Internet, I came to the conclusion that it would be best to power it from an external 12 V power supply, this would also allow me to connect the backlight in parallel. It was decided, and I began to rummage around the house in search of a compact adapter or power supply for 12 volts. All phone chargers, unfortunately, are 5V, this was not suitable. The power supply from the old 9V modem was also not suitable, because it could not start the fan itself. The only available 12V adapter in the house turned out to be the AC adapter for an electric razor. But I found it impossible to cut it, since I use a razor. Therefore, at the nearest radio parts store, a “female” connector was purchased for connecting the power supply from the razor. Wires from the fan were soldered to the contacts of this connector, and wires were also soldered in parallel to the LED strip. I had pieces of LED strip left over from a previous handmade project to improve the dashboard lighting of my car. I had pieces of RGB tape, which meant I could choose any backlight color. soldering wires to certain terminals on the tape. I wanted a blue backlight, so I soldered the wires with (-) to pin “B” (Blue). The LED strip is self-adhesive, so I easily glued it to the stand from below. The dangling wires were glued to the stand with a heat gun. Ready!

Now it’s time to try out how the assembled stand works -)))

But for the sake of completeness, I decided to cover the top of the stand with stickers that had been lying around for a long time. I think it turned out well.

And finally, a few words about performance. I checked the cooling efficiency using the OCCT program. Placed a load on the processor for 10 minutes. First test without the stand.

Then I let the processor cool down to the start temperature of the test and started the test with the stand.

The temperature difference on the processor cores was 6-7 degrees, which is quite comparable with expensive analogues sold in the store. Therefore, the homemade project was a success.

The next step is to prepare the fans. To do this, we connect them in parallel and solder them to the power supply from the mobile phone through a switch. In this case, we used a power supply from an old, non-working phone with an output voltage of 6.5 V and a current of 0.5 A.

Stage III

In the final step, we assemble the electronic part with the housing and peel off the blue protective film of the sandwich panel.

Laptop stand testing:

To check the effectiveness of the cooling pad, a table was compiled with temperature measurements on different laptop components depending on the cooling time.

As can be seen from the comparison table, already in the first minute of operation of this stand, there is a significant decrease in temperature. The temperature drops by 13 degrees for the central processing unit (CPU) and 10 degrees for the graphics processor (GPU or video card), which is a very good indicator.

A cute and elegant folding transforming table can be made not only from wood. The following photo shows a light small table made from unused chipboard scraps. The rounded corners of the tabletop and legs complicate the manufacturing process, but give the product a special grace.

As a laptop stand, two thrust bearings are screwed into the tabletop, which can be unscrewed freely if necessary. To fix the movable part of the tabletop in the raised position, a steel rod is used, which is inserted into a recess on the reverse side of the tabletop. In this version, the angle of the tabletop is not adjustable.

To get high-quality processed parts without chips, it is advisable to order cutting at any nearby furniture workshop. However, if you have all the necessary tools and skills, you can achieve a good result with your own hands. The parts are assembled using Euroscrews; the moving part of the tabletop is secured with a piano hinge. The stand (steel bar) for the tabletop is attached to the crossbar of the frame.

Option 3

To make a light and comfortable laptop table, shown in the next photo, plywood is suitable. The adjustable movable part of the tabletop has small holes for better ventilation and prevention of overheating. The legs, as in previous versions, are foldable.

Cutting and assembling parts is carried out in the same way as in previous versions. A fastener for the moving part of the tabletop, made in the form of a frame, is attached to its inner side. True, then the time to obtain the finished product will increase somewhat. The glue usually needs time to set, and the adhesive seam usually gains full strength within 24 hours.
And using sewer pipes, it is possible to manufacture a collapsible structure; besides, sewer pipes are much cheaper, and their strength will be quite sufficient for our product. The only thing is to make sure that there are rubber gaskets in the corners. Without them, the connection will be shaky and fragile.
We measure your laptop, cut the pipes to fit, but not very accurately, a tolerance of 1-2 cm is acceptable.


So, what you got: one pipe corresponding to the horizontal, two verticals of the computer and two at a height convenient for you above the table. The welding machine is convenient and won’t cause any problems, it attaches to the table, is easy to use, you can easily find it or ask your friends. The only thing is not to rush, be as careful as possible so as not to spoil everything with the curvature of the seam, insert the pipes into the weld evenly, not at an angle of 45 degrees. The process itself: we put on the ends of the device the corner and the pipe that need to be connected, press it, wait for a while, connect it.

When using glue, the technology is almost the same, only each connection must be fixed (the time depends on the type of glue) for setting. Therefore, we assemble it in parts: we glued all the parts in pairs and wait until the glue sets. Then we move on.

The end result should be a table like the one in the photo.
At the same time, at cost, your stand will cost 4 times cheaper than those that will be offered to you in the store. The hollow ends of the pipes can be sealed, puttied, put plugs, insert key chains, for example with a logo, at your discretion. Paint the entire product to match the color of the interior.

If you really want, you can go further and build a cooler into the stand for additional cooling of the laptop.
To do this, you will need a few more pieces of pipes and corners, as well as the cooler itself (which can be bought separately, or taken from an old computer power supply) and a piece of wire with a USB connector at the end (can be cut from an old mouse (of course a computer one, not caught in basement) or buy in a store). An additional tool you will need is a soldering iron with solder and electrical tape.
