And we dream of grass ... grass on the roof of the house

Bituminous and metal tiles, slate, euroruberoid, corrugated board, roofing membranes - that just has not been created in order to make the roof of the house beautiful and practical. But today we will talk about a very unusual type of roof - vegetable.

This technology was not invented yesterday or even the last century. For example, in Iceland, turf was laid on the roofs of houses as early as the 18th century, and for Norway, plant roofing materials are a national tradition.

In modern urban design, rooftop plants are increasingly appearing in luxury hotels and chic shopping malls. But it is not at all necessary to have a five-star hotel on your site. A green roof can be fitted to any home, regardless of size or roof structure.

Types of "green" roofs

Depending on the technology of their creation, "green" roofs are divided into two types:

  • Intensive: suggest the device of a real garden, with paths, recreation areas and even pools. It is these roofs that are usually made in hotels and entertainment complexes. They require ceilings of special strength that can withstand additional loads, since the weight of the entire structure per 1 sq. m can reach up to 700 kg. In addition, a drainage system is required to organize irrigation, constant fertilization and, in some cases, even mowing.
  • extensive. Landscaping of this type can be done on any type of roof, including country houses, garden gazebos, outbuildings and garages. A feature of extensive landscaping is the use of light soil, which is laid in a layer only 5-15 cm thick. For planting, unpretentious plants are selected that can form a continuous green carpet even with irregular watering. A layer of soil along with plants per 1 sq. m for such a roof weighs no more than 20 kg, so it is not necessary to strengthen the floors. We will talk about such roofs today.

By the way, modern technologies make it possible to make lawns not only on flat roofs, but also on pitched ones. For this purpose, special screens are used to retain the soil.

Roof structure

If you look at the roof in section, it will resemble a layer cake.
