Careful dismantling of tiles from the walls with your own hands

With the complete dismantling of tiles from the wall for subsequent finishing with new material, as a rule, there are no problems. With the help of a perforator, you can quickly cope with the task. But there are situations when only part of the tile is subject to removal and replacement, or the removed tile is planned to be used elsewhere. In this case, dismantling work requires a special approach.

Necessary tools and materials

Before you start dismantling the tiles from the walls, you should take care of your own safety, namely, purchase individual protection means:

  • protective glasses;
  • headdress;
  • mask or respirator;
  • rubber gloves;
  • stable shoes.

Be sure to prepare the room. If you do not plan to dismantle the floor tiles, lay old blankets on the floor and cover with polyethylene on top. The sink and toilet should also be covered to protect against bumps and debris.

To easily remove the tile, you need to stock up on the following tools:

  • perforator;
  • drill;
  • hammer, chisel, chisel;
  • putty knife;
  • roller and water container.

Tile removal technology

The method of removing old tiles from the walls depends on the material with which it was attached. It is almost impossible to remove a tile that is qualitatively laid on a cement mortar without damage. If the tile is planted on an adhesive, the probability of removing it entirely is quite high.

Demolition of a small area

In the case when only a few tiles need to be replaced, it is necessary to act with extreme caution so as not to damage the adjacent tile. Sequencing:

  1. Use a scraper or spatula to remove grout from the joints around the tiles that need to be replaced.
  2. If the tile is not firmly attached to the wall, pry it with a chisel and, tapping it with a hammer, gently chip off the fragment.
  3. When the tile is attached to the cement mortar, it must be loosened. To do this, pre-drill small holes in the tile with a drill.

Complete wall tiling

To remove all the tiles from the wall and keep it intact, you will have to spend a lot of time and effort, since you need to dismantle each tile individually. You need to start dismantling from the top row, gradually going down, thus avoiding the collapse of the tile. If you can't pry the top plate off, smash it with a hammer.

  1. Clean the tile joints with a spatula.
  2. Place a chisel with a thin blade under the tile and gently tap it with a hammer.
    During the dismantling process, periodically wet the wall with a wet roller to remove dust.
  3. When most of the tile has come off the wall, be careful not to damage the corners or drop the tile on the floor.

Features of removing tiles from drywall

Removing tiles from drywall is quite difficult, because the glue adheres very firmly to its surface. If the finishing sheets were plastered before gluing the tiles, you can try to dismantle the tiles with a hammer and chisel.

Even with the successful removal of tiles on drywall, glue will remain, the removal of which is a rather laborious process.

If the tile was attached to a non-plastered surface, it will be necessary to dismantle the tile along with the base. To embroider the seams, make several holes with a puncher and remove the drywall fasteners to the frame.

If you need to remove only a fragment of the tile, after removing the grout, cut out the intended area with a construction knife. In place of the resulting hole, make a patch from a profile or timber, on which apply a new tile.
