Past tense of a verb in Polish. Indicative. Past tense Past tense in Polish
Past tense of the verb in Polish is formed by cutting off its ending from the infinitive and adding the past tense suffix to the formed stem of the infinitive ł .
For example, from the infinitive czytac cut off the ending ć , we get the stem of the infinitive czyta-, add the past tense suffix ł and get the form of the 3rd person singular czytal(read).
However, with the verb forms of other persons in the singular and plural of the past tense, everything is a little more complicated.
In the singular, the following personal endings are added to them: -em, -es(for masculine forms) and -am, aś(for feminine forms), and in the plural: -liśmy, -liście, -li(męskosobowy (for personal-male forms) and -łyśmy, -łyście, -ły(niemęskosobowy (for non-personal masculine forms).
Let me remind you that the personal-male form is used when it comes to men or a group of people in which there is at least 1 man. The impersonal-masculine form is used in all other cases, that is, when it comes to women, children, animals, or inanimate objects.

The alternation of vowels is also somewhat difficult. e→a, which occurs with some verbs ending in ec:chciec(to want) , leżeć(lie) , miec(have) , music(must) , rozumiec(understand) , umieć(be able to) , widziec(see) , wiedzieć (to know) . Vowel a appears in the masculine, feminine, and neuter singular and the non-personal-masculine plural. For example:
miec- have
singular | ||
---|---|---|
masculine | feminine gender | neuter gender |
mi a Lem | mi a Lam | — |
mi a Les | mi a Laś | — |
mi a ł | mi a la | mi a Lo |

męskosobowy (personal masculine form) | niemęskosobowy (non-personal masculine form) | |
mi e liśmy | mi a Lyśmy | |
mi e licie | mi a Lyscie | |
mi e li | mi a Ly |
Also consider verbs ending in -ąć, they have alternating vowels ą → ę . Vowel ę appears in the feminine and neuter singular, as well as in the non-personal-masculine and personal-masculine plural forms. For example:
ciągnąć- to pull
singular | ||
---|---|---|

cign ą Lem | cign ę Lam | — |
cign ą Les | cign ę Laś | — |
cign ą ł | cign ę la | cign ę Lo |

cign ę li | cign ę Ly |
plynąć- swim

masculine | feminine gender | neuter gender |
plyn ą Lem | plyn ę Lam | — |
plyn ą Les | plyn ę Laś | — |
plyn ą ł | plyn ę la | plyn ę Lo |
plural | ||
męskosobowy (personal masculine form) | niemęskosobowy (non-personal masculine form) | |
plyn ę liśmy | plyn ę Lyśmy | |
plyn ę licie | plyn ę Lyscie | |
plyn ę li | plyn ę Ly |
Since personal endings verb forms signal what person and number in question, then the use of personal pronouns with them is optional, and even unnecessary. For example, if in Russian: "We worked together", then in the Polish equivalent "Pracowaliśmy razem".
It should also be borne in mind that in the forms of the 1st and 2nd person plural of past tense verbs, the stress falls on the third syllable from the end (and not on the penultimate one): czyt a liśmy, czyt a licie.
The idea of the article "100 most used verbs in the Polish language", I confess, is not mine, but one reader. And this is a great idea, I tell you! If only because I really didn’t find anything on this topic on the net - there are any number of lists of the most commonly used verbs in English and German, but - I really did not find, although, perhaps, I did not look well - not a single list of Polish.
There are a couple of small lists in several brochures that I have and, of course, a list of the most used words in the Polish language in general, from which I will also take some information. In order not to write here a heap of rather voluminous verb conjugation tables, I will simply list them, giving two forms in parentheses to them - for “I” and for “you”, and sometimes for “they”, if it is created as- that in a special way. If you are familiar with the butterfly rule, then it will not be difficult for you to recreate all the other forms of verbs. If you are unfamiliar, check it out! And also, to make it really cool, I’ll add an imperative mood here, but only in the second person. With an exclamation point so you don't make a mistake. If there is no word with an exclamation point, then there is no imperative mood. And - let's go!

This is a list of a hundred and one verbs, compiled from lists of the most common Polish verbs. Sometimes, when I wrote in parentheses the forms of conjugations of the present tense, I thought: “Yes, I have never heard in my life that someone used these forms at all!”. Therefore, you should approach the list with due attention and understanding: not all the verbs given here are used with such a high frequency in persons. Some almost always occur only in the infinitive, and some - more often in the imperative mood (for example, as with the verb wyobrazić - well, I have never heard someone say “Wyobrażę! - I’ll imagine!”, But “Wyobraź sobie!” Imagine!" - as much as you like). Therefore, forms are, of course, great, but sometimes the truth is not necessary.
But! I would like to add something else, namely, the verbs that you must know in the name of A1 Polish textbooks, which are very likely to come across in exams. Attention! This is an addition to the list above! This is not a standalone product! That is - read all the same with the above hundred (otherwise, why did they open the article at all :)).

Wow, I didn't think there were so many! Those who thoroughly studied the first book "
Traditionally verb iść(go) is considered an exception to the rule, since in the past tense it completely changes the basis. There are not so many exceptions in the past tense of the Polish language, but there are still enough materials for memorization here. And if you can avoid extra effort, then why not do it? In order not to force myself to memorize an extra exception, I suggest using family ties Russian and Polish languages. I must say that you and I really have a huge advantage over English-, French- or German-speaking students studying Polish. Today's verb example iść- far from the only one that makes it easier for us to learn the Polish language. And if you learn to see similar (not always, by the way, obvious) analogies between the Russian and Polish languages, then, I assure you, you will greatly facilitate your path to your goal - mastering the Polish language. I promise to return to this topic on the pages of this site and discover several more similar Russian-Polish secrets.
So, to business. Verb roots iść in Russian and Polish languages are very similar. Judge for yourself.
In Polish, as in Russian, in the past tense in the singular masculine form in the root of the verb iść there is the letter "e" between the consonants "sh" (sz) and "l" (l / ł).
And at the same time, in both languages, "e" in a similar position is absent in all other forms of the past tense.
It seems to me that this very clear and obvious analogy can help you and me with the verb iść in the past time.
It's time to talk seriously about the Polish verb. Until now, on verbs, we, as they say, hit pointwise: we figured it out from the Polish language, as well as on occasion. However, it’s not in vain that I myself constantly repeat that the No. 1 key to success in studying foreign language is systemic.
Today it's time to get acquainted with the system of conjugations of the Polish verb in the present tense. The simplest conjugation of the Polish verb is the am-conjugation. Since, quite objectively, this is the simplest conjugation, with a minimum number of exceptions, it is predominantly considered the first, although in the grammars of the Polish language it is officially called the third (). In order not to get confused in the numbers of conjugations, in Polish they can also be called by their characteristic endings: am-conjugation, ę-conjugation, i-conjugation, and sometimes a fourth (em-conjugation) is also distinguished. This makes it much easier to navigate and remember.
The biggest difficulty
What is the hardest thing about conjugating a Polish verb? Of course, these are not endings or even alternations. The fact is that in Polish, by the external gender of the infinitive, it is absolutely impossible to determine which conjugation the verb belongs to.
I am sure that after such a statement, you have a completely logical question: what to do?
In fact, I confess that neither I nor anyone else has a clear answer to this question. At least I haven't seen any. But there is definitely a way out.

Firstly, in order to defuse the situation and the problem did not seem so terrible to you, I will say that in Russian the situation completely similar. We just don't notice it (thank God!). After all, if you remember, at school we learned to determine the conjugation of a Russian verb at the end of this very verb in the third person (-at (-yat); -ut (-yut). And how can you tell a poor Pole or an unfortunate German to find out the endings 3l pl., because that's why he needs to learn the conjugation! etc. So there are ways not to get confused in Polish.
Secondly, my 7-year teaching practice opens up a fascinating observation. When all the recommendations are followed, this problem practically disappears for almost all of my students by the 12th-15th lesson. This despite the fact that we get acquainted with the last conjugation somewhere in the 5-7th lesson! To be honest, some especially complex verbs have to be dealt with later, but these are rather interesting exceptions to the rule.
Thirdly, there are secrets that will help you understand the conjugation of Polish verbs. They can hardly be called rules, but these trends are often very useful in order to clean up the head. I will introduce you to some of them in articles devoted to the corresponding conjugations, with a part in separate materials, with a part within.
In the end, in order not to leave you with anything at all, before dealing in detail with each of the conjugations separately, I will give arbitrary examples of conjugation in each of the 3 conjugations of the Polish verb.

In this lesson, we continue to work with verbs.
As you know, the principle of working with verbs is always the same, regardless of the group:
removed the ending from the infinitive and put the correct endings for I, you, we, they etc.
There are 4 groups of verbs in Polish. We have tried to give a fairly simple and structured explanation of this topic in this tutorial. Understand the principle, learn the endings, and then build vocabulary and learn the verbs and their conjugation as you work with the Polish language.
Proper endings allow us to correctly say "I'm listening Yu"," we understand eat", not "I'm listening be"," we understand be».

You and I just have to do exercises to practice the correct endings, build vocabulary from sentences and listen to Polish in the answers to the exercises - this is a great practice for listening.
Tip for the exercises: if you can’t conjugate the verb, listen to the voice acting and write it under dictation.
