St. Catherine's Convent in Tver. Catherine's Convent

In May 1763, a church in the name of the Holy Great Martyr Catherine was built on the cape at the confluence of the Tvertsa into the Volga with a donation from Empress Catherine II and parishioners in Zatverechye. In 1929, the church was closed, and a garage, a warehouse and a repair shop appeared under its vaults. In 1941, during the hostilities, the top of the bell tower was destroyed. The surviving tiers were dismantled in 1954. On December 7, 1989, the temple became operational. June 15, 1996 1996 St. vmch. Catherine was transferred to the newly formed St. Catherine's Convent. In 2001, the upper tiers of the bell tower were restored (architect V.V. Kurochkin, A.V. Prokhorov).

Information from the stand near St. Catherine's Monastery

On May 15, 1996, the courtyard of the women's Ascension Orshin Monastery, which existed here since 1993, was transformed into St. Catherine's convent. The monastery got its name in honor of the Holy Great Martyr Catherine, to whom the main altar of the monastery church is dedicated. The church dominates the development of nearby streets and occupies an important place in the panorama of Tver.

It is known that at the beginning of the 17th century there were wooden churches on this site - the Holy Trinity, St. Nicholas the Wonderworker and St. vmch. Catherine. Catherine's temple was "cold" ie. was not heated. By 1684, the St. Nicholas Church was quite dilapidated, as a result of which it was dismantled. A warm Nikolsky chapel was soon attached to the Catherine's temple. In 1732, the Catherine's Church burned to the ground, after which it was rebuilt. In 1763, a huge fire occurred in Tver, as a result of which most of the city's buildings were destroyed in the fire. Catherine's Church also suffered.

In 1773, clergy and parishioners filed a petition with the Tver Spiritual Consistory for the construction of a stone church in the name of St. vmch. Catherine, instead of the wooden one, which suffered from the city fire. According to legend, Empress Catherine II herself donated 500 rubles for the construction of a stone church. The church was built from 1774 to 1786. in the then dominant baroque style in Russia. This is an octagon on a quadrangle, richly decorated with rustication and platbands. The lower quadrangle and the octagon above it are double-height. The octagon of the temple is richly and peculiarly decorated. The building is completed by a domed faceted roof with a slender bulbous cupola on a high faceted drum. Windows of two levels: the lower ones are arched, the upper ones are square, united by common vertical frames into unique elegant compositions. This temple, like many other churches in Tver, was built in the characteristic traditions of the local Tver architectural school. In 1800, a fence was built around the temple. In 1806, the Catherine's Church was expanded with an addition of aisles in the classical style in honor of the Nativity of John the Baptist and in the name of the Tenderness Icon of the Mother of God. In 1819 the church was decorated with wall paintings. In 1835, a new porch was built, and in 1852 the bell tower was "renovated", as a result of which two tiers of the bell tower ringing with a tent and a dome rose above the wide refectory. In 1901, iconostases were made in the aisles of the temple.

Since 1929, repeated attempts have been made to close the temple under various pretexts. In 1933, after the arrest of the last rector, Archpriest Nikolai Vologda, the temple was finally closed. A garage, a warehouse and a repair shop appeared under its arches. As a result, the internal layout of the temple was changed for household needs, the murals were smeared over. In 1941, during the hostilities, the top of the bell tower was destroyed, the remaining tiers were dismantled in 1954.

Church of St. vmch. Catherine was one of the first in the city to be returned to believers; services resumed on December 7, 1989, although even before 1992 the main temple and altar part was occupied by a state institution. Over time, the temple was restored. In 2001, the upper tiers of the bell tower were restored. Soon the bells appeared on the bell tower, consecrated by the Archbishop of Tver and Kashinsky Victor. In the temple there are particles of the holy relics of the great martyr Catherine, the Kiev-Pechersk saints, the Optina elders and other saints. The chapel of St. Seraphim of Sarov is under construction.

) cloisters:
At the confluence of the two main rivers of the Tver region - the Volga and Tvertsa, opposite the ancient Otroch Monastery, there is a monastery, the history of which began quite recently. Nowadays, ancient monastic cloisters are being revived everywhere from the ruins, famous for their centuries-old history, holy founders and ascetics, miraculous icons and relics. But in 1996, a monastery arose on the Tver land, the history of which is being created before our eyes.

June 15, 1996 on the day of memory of St. blgv. Princess Juliana Novotorzhskaya By the Decree of His Eminence Victor, Archbishop of Tver and Kashinsky, the courtyard of the Voznesensky Orshin Convent at the Church of St. vmts. Catherine, behind Tvertsa, transformed into St. Catherine's Convent. The first abbess of the newly created monastery was Abbess Juliana, who previously headed the Orshin Monastery. The monastery got its name in honor of the Holy Great Martyr Catherine, to whom the main altar of the temple is dedicated. The Catherine Church itself was built in 1786 at the expense of parishioners.

The heart of the monastery is the temple of the VMTs. Catherine built in the 18th century. with chapels of St. Nicholas and St. John the Baptist. In 2001, the bell tower, which had previously been destroyed, was restored. In the temple there are particles of the relics of the Kiev-Pechersk saints, Optina elders, Tver, Novotorzhsky and other saints. Particularly revered icons in the monastery: Tikhvin, "Do not cry for Me, Mother", Kazan, Vilna icons of the Mother of God, the image of the Beheading of John the Baptist. The monastery operates four-year theological courses for adults, a children's Sunday school, and an almshouse for the elderly nuns of the monastery. The Catherine Monastery is engaged in the restoration of the nearby churches of St. Sergius of Radonezh, St. vmch. Mina, Victor and Vincent, vmch. Nikita. On the territory of the monastery, a chapel of St. Seraphim of Sarov. Everyone who comes to the monastery finds prayerful help and support here.

At present, there are 33 nuns in the monastery, more than half of them are elderly and infirm. The monastery is in dire need of medicines, funds for the improvement of the monastery.

Those who wish can come to work for the glory of God, the monastery accepts pilgrims.
Help is especially needed in caring for sick residents.

The monastery will gladly accept any help, the sisters will pray for benefactors.

Temple of the military Catherine arose in the 20s of the 17th century. Then it was made of wood. Nearby stood also a wooden church in honor of St. Nicholas. Unlike Nikolsky, Catherine's Church was "cold", i.e. was not heated. By 1684, the St. Nicholas Church fell into disrepair, was dismantled, and a warm Nikolsky chapel was added to the Catherine's Church.
In 1732, the wooden Catherine's Church burned down and was rebuilt.
In 1773, the clergy and parishioners asked for permission to build a stone church. Construction continued from 1774 to 1786. In 1800, a fence was built around the temple. By 1813, the right Predtechensky chapel was added in honor of the Nativity of the Prophet and Baptist of the Lord John. In 1824, with the blessing of the ruling bishop, the feast day of the Predtechensky chapel became the day of the Finding of the head of the prophet John the Baptist (February 24, old style).
In 1835 a new porch was built, and in 1852 the bell tower was rebuilt. In 1901, iconostases were made in the aisles of the temple. In 1906, a chapel was built in the right tower of the fence in honor of St. Seraphim of Sarov. In 1932-33. after the arrest of the last rector of the temple, Archpriest Nikolai Vologda, the temple was closed. In the 60s, the bell tower was dismantled, which suffered during the Great Patriotic War. Divine services in the temple were resumed on December 7, 1989. In 1993, the courtyard of the Voznesensky Orshin Convent was opened at the temple. In 1996, the courtyard received the status of an independent St. Catherine's Convent. In 2001 the bell tower was restored.
Two more temples located nearby are assigned to the monastery.
The temple in honor of the holy martyrs Mina, Victor and Vincent was built before the Time of Troubles, it is mentioned in scribe books in 1628. Until that time, there were two churches on the site of the Mino-Victorovskaya church: one in honor of Sts. Athanasius and Cyril of Alexandria, and the other - St. mch. Mines; it is not known when the Afanasiyevo-Kirillovskaya church was dismantled, but in the decree of the consistory in 1794 only the church of St. Mines. This decree instructed the priest Procopius Lvov "from the clerks and parishioners" to dismantle the dilapidated wooden church for firing bricks, "prepared for the newly built stone church with a chapel" (in honor of St. Barbara). Initially, the church was covered with boards, with a wooden bell tower on stone pillars. The stone bell tower was built in 1819, and the plank roof on the church was replaced with an iron one in 1823. In 1858, at the request of the parishioners, another chapel was added on the north side in honor of the Entry into the Temple Holy Mother of God.
In the Mino-Victorovskaya Church, a feast in honor of the prophet Elijah was held with special solemnity, on this day a religious procession was made to the village of Konstantinovka, where there was wooden chapel. The church had an icon of St. Nicholas with particles of the relics of this saint and St. John the Merciful. Temple of St. Sergius of Radonezh.
In 1749, on the site of the modern church of St. Sergius stood a wooden church of the Resurrection of Christ, built with donations from parishioners. During the Lithuanian invasion, the temple was destroyed, but its ruins were preserved for quite a long time.
In 1775, the Tver merchant Grigory Bogdanov founded a new stone church, which at the beginning of construction, with the blessing of Archbishop Arseny of Tver, was renamed in honor of St. Sergius of Radonezh. This happened on the occasion of the return of Archbishop Arseny of Tver from the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, where he was at the veneration of the relics of St. Sergius and received as a gift an icon with particles of his relics.
The construction of the temple was completed in 1780. Initially, the stone temple was with a small warm chapel in the name of Elijah the Prophet.
In memory of the former Resurrection Church, an old, large icon of the Resurrection of Christ (Descent into Hell) was transferred to the new stone church and hung on the right pillar at the western entrance to the church. In 1834, at the expense of the Tver merchant Mikhail Bogdanov, according to the project of the provincial architect Ivan Fedorovich Lvov, a bell tower was added and a refectory was extended: instead of one chapel, two were built - the right one in honor of the Prophet Elijah, and the left one in honor of Alexy, the man of God.
In January 1930, a service was held in the church for the last time.

On June 15, 1996, the courtyard of the Ascension Orshina Convent for Women, at the Church of St. Catherine of Tver, by the Decree of the ruling bishop, it was transformed into the St. Catherine's Convent in Tver, which, according to the report of the ruling Bishop, by the Determination of the Holy Synod of 16.05.1996. approved as an active monastery for the revival of monastic life with the appointment of the abbess nun Juliana (Ritoniemi Kirsi Marita), in 2000 she was elevated to the rank of abbess, with the release from the abbess of the Ascension Orshin Monastery.
30 people live in the monastery: 1 abbess, 6 nuns, 5 nuns, 5 novices and 13 workers.
There is a Sunday school at the monastery. The sisters of the monastery carry out catechism work in the medical, music-pedagogical and trade-economic colleges, construction lyceums Nos. 5 and 9, in school No. 44 in Tver and in the Mednovsky boarding house, with military personnel providing assistance to the monastery. The Orthodox Theological Courses have been operating for the fifth year, where about 100 people study.
In 2001, the destroyed bell tower of the St. Catherine's Church, the main cathedral of the monastery, was restored, continued repair work cells, built a temporary fence around the monastery and planted an orchard.

In the church on the day of remembrance of St. Sergius of Radonezh, the first divine service took place. During the year, whitewashing of the central aisle of the Catherine's Church was carried out. Repairs to cell rooms are underway. The design of the construction of a new monastery building with a house church and an almshouse for the elderly and sick nuns is underway.

Often we strive to visit shrines, sometimes located many thousands of kilometers away, even located in other countries, in order to venerate miraculous icons, to the holy relics of God's saints. This is a very necessary work for our salvation. But we must not forget about those shrines that are near us, on our native Tver land, in order to honor them, to resort to the prayerful help of the saints, so that our grandchildren and great-grandchildren know and remember about them.

We visited the St. Catherine's Convent, located in a picturesque corner of old Tver (in Zaverechye) at the confluence of the Tvertsa into the Volga. The view of St. Catherine's Cathedral and the bell tower decorates the panorama of Tver.

Approaching the monastery, everyone experienced a new meeting with him. Someone in this area passed their childhood years (and we heard exclamations about what is no longer there), someone ran here for Theological courses (a whole life!), someone was in a hurry when prayer for loved ones was especially needed. ..

A little shy, we decided to look around. On the left side of Kropotkin Street, opposite the monastery gates, we saw a stand "Welcome to Tver" with information about the monastery and its temples and a detailed map of Tver.

Cars were parked outside the monastery gates, and I immediately remembered how weekly they met at the station and took Vasily Ivanovich Moiseev, an ascetic teacher of the Old and New Testament at the Theological Courses, who was always remembered with love and special reverence by all graduates of the courses. And when we were leaving the monastery, indeed, Vasily Ivanovich came out of the monastery gates and got into a car, which undoubtedly took him to the nearest electric train to Moscow.

We took a photo for memory and entered the territory of the monastery.

At the northern wall stands a monument to the last rector of the temple, Archpriest Nikolai Vologda. We came up to bow to Father Nikolai.
The inscription on the monument:

Archpriest Nikolai Vologodsky
1864 – 1932
Rector of the Church of St. vmch. Catherine.
1891 – 1932
He was buried at the German cemetery in Tver.

On the territory of the monastery, we were surrounded by grooming and comfort, created by the hands of the nuns. Opposite the cathedral is a beautiful garden in a snow-white order, next to it is a flower garden. Waiting for the Reverend Mother Angelina, we sat down on the benches located in the shade of the trees. A cool breeze blew, birds sang in full voice, as if they had flown here from all over the city. We felt like in Paradise.

We had time to admire St. Catherine's Cathedral, entered it and kissed the shrines, stopped at the stands in the porch of the temple and outside on both sides front door on the west wall...

With mother Angelina, we entered the temple and immediately felt that we were in the warm house of our parents.

There are many icons here, some of which we have never seen. And what interesting stories we heard about these icons, about how they got into the temple. After all, icons, like people, have their own life, their own history, their own unique path.

We did not leave the temple for a very long time, we wanted to listen to these amazing stories again and again. We heard with great interest about the parish church, which later became a monastery. We learned a lot about the last rector of the church of St. Catherine the Great Martyr, Archpriest Nicholas of Vologda - about his life, service to God and people, that he, like many clergymen, went through severe trials of godless years and endured many sorrows in the name of God, but did not gave up.

Let us worthily honor the memory of all the martyrs who laid down their lives for the sake of the Lord Jesus Christ, for it is said (Gospel of Matthew, 10:22):
22 " and you will be hated by all for my name's sake: but he who endures to the end, he will be saved."
22 "and you will be hated by all because of my name; but he who endures to the end shall be saved."

Mother Angelina told us the following.

Church of the Great Martyr Catherine was first wooden (XVII century), then a chapel was added to it in honor of St. Nicholas. Later, a double-altar stone church was built and consecrated (XVIII century). AT early XIX centuries, the 3rd chapel (right) was added to it in honor of the Baptist of the Lord John. The aisle was able to fit in so harmoniously that the extension is almost invisible, only the arch of the main aisle is slightly displaced.

The temple has always been a parish church, there has never been a monastery on this site. Before the revolution, all Zaverechie came to this temple. "The temple is old, but the monastery is young," says Mother Angelina.

The last rector, Archpriest Nikolai Vologda was very kind. When the cow calved, he gave the calf to the poor villagers - everyone loved him for his kindness.
Nikolai's father was arrested, leaving his son Yuvenaly Nikolaevich and two granddaughters after the deceased daughter Augusta. Son Yuvenaly Nikolaevich - was a doctor, returned later, when his father was already in prison. The granddaughters stayed with the nanny. Everyone was frightened, no one came to them, they almost died. Nanny had nothing to feed them. And suddenly a cart full of food came - one of the villagers, who was doing well and to whom the father had given a heifer in his time, decided to thank him.

Nikolai's father was 70 years old when he was in prison. Batiushka was accused of illegal currency transactions and counter-revolutionary activities. At that time, such an accusation was made when starving people sold their grandmother's ring to buy food and save children from starvation.
The father did not sign anything. As a punishment, he was put in a cell with criminals who mocked him: they drove him under the bunks and put a skullcap with sewage on his head.
He died in prison from physical and mental suffering.

They were going to give the body to relatives for burial, but when they saw the number of people who came to say goodbye to him, they decided that so many people did not come to the funeral of party leaders, and the body was not handed over. They buried at night at the German cemetery in Tver in a bag with two bodies. The son was away, and the nanny was afraid to come at night to attend the funeral. The place of burial is unknown. Now there is a hippodrome on this place. And at the northern wall of the temple is monument(not a grave!) fathers.

The bell tower of the Church of the Great Martyr Catherine did not exist after the 70s, when it was destroyed. The temple after the war looked better than in those years.
Relatives of Archpriest Nikolai Vologda came to the monastery: granddaughter Nadezhda Borisovna with children. At their own expense, they restored the bell tower according to old drawings and photographs - they restored an exact copy of the bell tower. The photo of the bell tower was made by the famous photographer Prokudin-Gorsky (in the era of black and white photography he managed to find a way to take and reproduce color photographs!), they found it in the Archives of the American Senate.
The great-grandchildren of Father Nikolai live alone - in Russia, the other - abroad. The children of Nadezhda Borisovna were baptized, and then their children, who themselves asked for it, were also baptized. They do not forget the monastery even now, and they come to visit.

First, the Ascension Orshin Monastery was given to the Church. His yoke at my mother was Julian and I (Ritoniemi, now the abbess of the St. Catherine's Monastery), could not spend the winter there, Vladyka Viktor (Metropolitan of Tver and Kashni) blessed me to live at this church. First, a courtyard of the Orshin Monastery was formed here, then the lord decided that there would be two independent monasteries.

The temple was returned in parts. When the main aisle was being repaired, there were still safes in the left one. Previously, there was a RSU-3 here, on the site of the current garden there were remnants of the checkpoint.

Miracles in the Temple began to occur from the very beginning of the restoration of the temple, with main aisle.
The temple had floor ceilings, rails. The scaffolding was set up to the very top, the temple was whitewashed. And they saw a black spot in the center of the dome. The workers climbed in and saw that it was a cluster of flies. The reason was the warm air that rose up and collected under the dome.
When living creatures overcome, they pray to the martyr Tryphon. Matushka gave her blessing to serve a moleben to the martyr. And the workers went for dichlorvos.
The prayer service began. Workers came with dichlorvos and climbed up the scaffolding. They dropped a canister and had to go downstairs to get it. They went up - the atomizer fell - went down - went up - fell again. So they climbed up and down.
When the prayer service ended, they once again climbed up. And at that time a small bird with a long beak flew in, pecked at all the flies and disappeared. On the icons, the martyr Tryphon is depicted with a falcon, and there was no doubt that it was a bird of paradise.
This was the first miracle.

Then mother Angelina told us about the icons of the temple.

Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God located to the left of the pulpit. When the temple was opened, the icon was stolen. The police asked her to describe. How would you describe an icon? So the icon was never found. And after that we decided to photograph all the icons of the temple.
The Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God was completely black and only the eyes were visible. The photograph showed the image of the Mother of God and the icon was given for restoration. After removing the top completely black layer, an image appeared that was completely different than in the photo. When they wanted to keep the icons, they were written on top just to hide the image. The letter turned out to be very rude, it was also removed and an image appeared Tikhvin icon Mother of God.

To the right of the pulpit is ark and icon of the Great Martyr Catherine.
The relics of the Great Martyr Catherine in our churches are very rare, since some of the relics that are preserved are now in the monastery of the Great Martyr Catherine in Sinai and they are not distributed (we have a reliquary with a particle of the relics of the Great Martyr Catherine in the Vladimir Church).
One person who was engaged in antiques got an icon with a particle of the relics of the Great Martyr Catherine. Seeing no value in the relics, he gave them to the monastery. In the temple, the relics are stored in a beautiful carved reliquary.
Nearby is a full-length icon of the Great Martyr Catherine in a silver setting.

Near the salt on the right is also Icon of the Mother of God "Don't cry for me Mother".
This icon is rare, we have seen such an icon for the first time. Historically, it has been known since the end of the 20th century. Mother Angelina said that this is the only icon where the Lord Jesus Christ is depicted laid in a tomb.
When carrying out restoration work, prevention is superimposed on the preserved layer in the form of small insuring pieces, which are removed before working on a specific area, but this is not easy to do.
The restorer wanted to complete the work with this icon as soon as possible and came to the workshop on her day off. It turned out that there was no light in the workshop, but while it was light outside, she decided to work. The paper came off the face of the Mother of God very easily and she worked with enthusiasm, and when she went out into the corridor, it turned out that it was already completely dark. Returning to the workshop, she saw a pillar of light emanating from the face of the Mother of God, which illuminated everything. She became very timid, but then continued to work.
Later, she was told how she could touch the icon AFTER THIS! And the next day, she told her colleagues what had happened, and they did not believe her. They decided that she dreamed it from fatigue. They began to photograph the icon, but the camera did not work, although I photographed other objects without problems. Then people realized that it was a miracle and began to remember the prayers, who knew what. And after that I managed to photograph the icon.

Until recently, the temple was icon of the Crucifixion with those coming from the cell of one of the Diveevo sisters. The icon is updated and the images appear: the myrrh-bearing woman, the centurion and the inscriptions have become visible.
Now this icon has been transferred to the chapel of St. Julian and and and Eupr a Xia of Moscow, which is at the monastery gates.

Icons often come around the holidays.
Mother Angelina drew our attention to the iconostasis. So, Kon e icon of the Mother of God, located on the iconostasis to the left of the Royal Doors, appeared in the temple in front of the about a strong vigil under the Annunciation of the Most Holy Theotokos, the icon of the Savior, located to the right of the Royal Doors, on the Trinity parental Saturday. Four icons of the apostolic-hierarchal row (3rd row) - the apostle Peter, the apostle Paul, St. Jonah, Metropolitan of Moscow and All Russia, and Saint Spyridon, Bishop of Trimifuntsky - came to the feast of St. Jonah.
Although the iconostasis is not finished yet, we admired carved royal doors , which were performed by our Tver carvers.

Icon of the Kiev-Pechersk Mother of God with the upcoming Saints Anthony and Theodosius. When they brought this icon, the sisters saw it, it seemed, in a hopeless state: boards and a layer of paint in a bag, like a shell. The restorers set to work, and the colorful layer of the icon came together easily, like a puzzle, with the help of God. Now this icon stands next to the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, in the window opening.

In the temple are six Icons of the Kazan Mother of God.
One of them - Kazan Mother of God, which is located on the left in front of the salt very much loved by parishioners. Seeing this icon, an elderly couple wanted to decorate it, and they ordered a silver aureole for this icon. Before bringing this whisk to the temple, the wife had a dream that she and her husband were being washed in a nun's bathhouse, and she was outraged by such a dream. In the monastery they were explained that this dream means the purification of their souls through the prayers of the sisters of the monastery. After that, the couple also ordered a frame for this icon, twined with silver flowers.

Another one Kazan Icon of the Mother of God located on the north wall of the main aisle.
She was saved by a student during his construction team youth. The hostess of the house where the students stayed wanted to kindle the stove with a scroll of canvas, which turned out to be an icon. The student asked the hostess not to do this, but then offered his guitar instead of the icon. And we know how much the guitar was valued in the formation detachment. Then the icon was oiled, now we have a beautiful and bright icon, with a surprisingly clear, as if luminous, face.

We have moved to right aisle of John the Baptist.
Another one icon of the Kazan Mother of God is located in the right John the Baptist aisle next to the passage to the main aisle. This icon of peace about chila.
Previously, during epidemics of plague and cholera, 12 akathists served before her.
Something like this happened around 2003. A pilgrim came to the monastery. Suddenly she fell ill, a doctor was called and the picture of the disease corresponded to the classical picture of anthrax.
Anthrax is one of the most dangerous infections. The ambulance took the sick woman to the infectious diseases hospital, she was put in a box, and personnel in anti-plague suits entered her.
A quarantine was declared in the monastery, special treatment was carried out. At this time the at monastery menia matushka Julian and I was in the Orsha Monastery and she was not allowed into St. Catherine's Monastery.
12 akathists served in the Orsha Monastery. After that, the cow calved dead calves. This is what happens when the Lord removes misfortune from a person, strikes death at domestic animals.
And in the Catherine's Monastery, the sisters also served 12 akathists in front of this icon - the icon of zamirot about chila.
The course of the pilgrim's illness changed dramatically and she began to recover.

Icon of St. Nicholas and the Great Martyr Barbara.
When the temple was almost empty, before the hierarchical service, they turned to the familiar priests with a request to help - to lend icons for a while. One priest (mother Angelina delicately did not give his name, and we did not ask) gave the icon and for some time could not take it away. When he came, he did not recognize: "What kind of icon have you got!". During this time, the icon was cleansed and the image of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker and the Great Martyr Barbara became clear. Batiushka was so amazed by this change that he left the icon as a gift.

Icon of St. Michael, Metropolitan of Kyiv who baptized Russia.
When she was donated, she was completely black. She was in the mother's office, she was taken to the temple for several days before being put away for storage. And after a few days the icon was cleared. Mother Angelina smiles and says: "... to store and don't get in."

A large icon of the Truncated Head of John the Baptist on a platter with a life in a silver frame.
This icon was offered to be bought by the monastery for quite a lot of money. There was no such money. The icon was left in the guest room where mother receives guests.
And then it happened that a friend of my mother came, famous person from Moscow region. During the conversation with his mother, he kept looking at the icon. Then he asked why such an icon was not in the temple. Mother explained the situation. Without even asking about the price, he said that he was buying this icon for the monastery. He was told that she was dear, but he was firm in his intention.
The icon was cleaned and hung. After some time, he was asked why he bought this particular icon. And he told this story.
One day, when he had just begun to go to church, he decided to arrange a holiday for the inhabitants of his city. People were offered refreshments for free, including meat dumplings. Then he went to his father and thought that he would praise him. But the priest was angry with him and said that he had committed this on the day of a particularly strict fast - on the day of the beheading of John the Baptist, and he had sinned not only himself, but also brought the whole city into sin. And he added that he did not know how to atone for such a sin.
Therefore, when he saw this icon, he understood that through it the Lord a gives him the opportunity to atone for this sin.
It is noteworthy that before that, girls were born in his family. He prayed intensely in front of this icon, and after three girls in the family, on September 11 (the day of the Beheading of John the Baptist), a son was born. Mother Angelina, finishing the story, said: "There are no questions about the name of the son. Of course, John."

After that we moved to the left aisle of St. Nicholas, Archbishop of Myra of Lycia.
In this aisle there is another amazing icon - AT and Icon of the Mother of God of Lena.
AT Soviet time one pious woman kept a temple icon of the Mother of God. And she hung this icon in her daughter-in-law's bedroom.
Somehow it happened to the daughter-in-law in a dream to hear a voice: "Let me go home." She turned over and continued to sleep. And again I heard the voice and the same words. She thought that she just had a headache, got up and opened the window. And I heard: "I will not go through the window." She saw that someone was moving around the room, got scared and ran to her mother-in-law.
The mother-in-law, a God-fearing woman, immediately understood which house in question, and took the icon to the temple. It happened on the eve of the feast of the Entry into the Church of the Most Holy Theotokos.

In the same aisle is Crucifixion with the upcoming. Once, the lamp in front of this Crucifix itself lit up.
And in this regard, mother Angelina remembered Great Saturday, on which blessed fire.
The whole Orthodox world is waiting with hope for the convergence blessed fire because it's the promise of another year...
At a time when there were no special flights to deliver the Holy Fire to Russia, the benefactors, at the risk to themselves, transported the Holy Fire for the monastery through Israeli customs (the most stringent in the world!) So, two pilgrims flew in an airplane and both (for insurance) kept handbags with open fire on their knees. And they brought...
The sisters of the monastery remember the Easter service when, after procession two nuns came out with bundles of burning candles lit from the blessed fire and, walking from the main chapel, lit lamps and candles. The service was unusually joyful, thanks to the blessed fire brought.

In the same aisle is large icon of St. Sergius of Radonezh. This icon became famous for being renewed in front of one parishioner, who loved to pray near it. She saw how ripples passed through the icon and it was renewed. And this icon ended up in the temple completely black. Prior to that, it was kept by a man who promised this icon to the monastery, and then decided to sell it and after that he fell seriously ill. The whole family persuaded him to fulfill the promise, which he did.

In the same aisle there is an icon Heavenly patroness ig at the monastery of Mother Julian and and - Holy Blessed Princess Julian and and Novotorzhskaya and Vyazemskaya.

There are many more icons in the temple worthy of being told about them, but time was limited. We left the temple on the territory of the monastery.

Near the main gate of the monastery is Chapel of Saints Julian and and and Eupr a Xia of Moscow, sisters of St. Alex and I, Metropolitan of Moscow, All Russia wonderworker, whose holy relics are in El about Khovsky Cathedral in Moscow. For his sisters, Saint Alex and and founded the monastery - the now famous Zach a tyevsky monastery. Now, the previously destroyed huge cathedral with 11 aisles has been restored there.
In the early years of the Catherine and Orshina monasteries, mother Julian and i was ig at menia of the Catherine Monastery, and mother Evpr a ksia - the abbess of the Orshina monastery. Both mothers came to bow to Zach a Tiev monastery and pray to the Monk Julian and and and Eupr a ksia. The relics of the reverend sisters have not yet been found.
When the mothers entered the monastery, the sisters noticed them and asked who they were. Knowing that this is at Menia Julian and me and the nun Evpr a Ksia, ran to the mother: "Resurrected! Appeared!"

To the right of the temple the house of the fence, in the right wing of which is the chapel of St. Seraphim of Sarov. The chapel was built in 1903, the year of the glorification of Father Seraphim.
In the chapel every Saturday a prayer service is served to St. Seraphim of Sarov at 13:00.

Kutin Photos about i A. A.

The cell building is located a little away from the temple, at the opposite gate of the monastery. White 2-storey building with wooden porches covered with ivy. Only a small wooden bell tower breaks the monastic peace in time.

Behind the cell building, construction is underway chapel of St. Tryphon P e Chensky, Kola, educator of the Lapps(Saami)* .
Holy on to the Cathedral of Tver Saints.

Mother Angelina spoke about the miracle of the ascension to Heaven of the Chalice (Chalice) from the hands of the one responsible for the destruction of the monastery in 1589.

Why is the chapel dedicated specifically to the Monk Tryphon P e Chengsky, is easily explained: mother Julian and i'm finnish.
One day an excursion from Murmansk arrived at the monastery without warning. Mother usually does not meet the group, but this time she came out to meet them. With the group was rector Trifonov P. e Cheng Monastery, whom they met in Lapland.

Note:
* - about the reverend Trifon P e Cheng
on our website.

Returning from the chapel of St. Tryphon of Pechenga, we saw the snow-white cell building and St. Catherine's Cathedral from a new angle.

Three churches are attached to the monastery.
Church of Martyrs Mina, Victor and Vik e ntia.
The side aisles of the temple have not been preserved, only the aisle of the Great Martyr Barbara has been preserved. Served once a year on November 24 on Memorial Day great Martyr Mina and Martyrs Victor and Vik e ntia.
The temple was preserved in a much better condition compared to other ascribed temples, since it contained the museum's funds.

Church of St. S e rgy of Radonezh has three aisles: St. Sergius, St. Alex and I, the man of God and the prophet Elijah. This temple is located very close to the monastery. Near the temple there was a separate bell tower, which has not been preserved. The temple is old, the walls sag under the weight, the ground level rises, as a result of which humidity rises and mold appears. The ongoing work to maintain the temple is no longer enough, serious financial investments are needed, which are not available.
Divine services are held in the church once a year.

Also attached to the monastery Church of the Great Martyr Nikita, located behind the Fire Square. The temple is completely destroyed, the floor coverings are collapsing and it is dangerous to enter there. The reason for the rapid destruction of the temple, which is happening now, is the damage to the roof of the dome. A broken piece of iron caused precipitation to get inside.
In the Soviet years, the temple housed a laboratory. Therefore, in the temple there are stoves, hoods, rails pass through the altar. When it was possible to enter the temple, spilled mercury was found. I had to call the Sanitary Epidemiological Station for disinfection.
A benefactor was found - a servant of God e rgiy, who, working as a truck driver, saves part of his earnings and contributes money to maintain the temple. But such funds for the restoration of the temple are not enough.

Mother Angelina finished an incomplete story about the monastery and the miracles taking place in it, apologized and left us. We walked along the southern wall of the cathedral to the graves of Archpriest Nikolai's relatives. Looking back, I saw how fascinated our pilgrims were looking at the dome and bell tower of St. Catherine's Cathedral from the wall of the Fence House. Indeed, the cathedral from here is very beautiful!

After everything we saw and heard about the monastery, we again settled down on a bench in a marvelous corner of the monastery. Everyone dreamed of when we would visit again this island of love, warmth, which is located behind the fence, far from the stormy sea of \u200b\u200blife ...

Where two rivers converge - Tvertsa and Volga, there is an elegant temple with a high bell tower. In the panorama of the Tver-Zaverechye region, it attracts the eye with a vertical against the background of low houses. At first glance, the St. Catherine's Monastery is very young, because its chronicle began quite recently - in 1996, but the place of worship has existed here for about 4 centuries. The wooden church was first built here in the 1920s. 17th century. It was summer, unlike the neighboring Nikolskaya. At the end of the 17th century, the Nikolskaya Church was dismantled due to dilapidation, and the “winter” chapel of the same name was added to the Catherine’s Church.

A bit of history

Due to constant devastating fires in 1773, the priesthood and parishioners asked for funds for the construction of a stone church, and in 1786 it was completed. In 1813, the Catherine's Church received another chapel - the Baptist. In 1906, a chapel in honor of St. Seraphim of Sarov was built in the turret of the stone fence. In the Soviet years, the church was converted into a warehouse, and then into offices, the bell tower, dilapidated during the war by a shell, was dismantled to the ground. In 1989, divine services were resumed, and soon the temple became the courtyard of the Ascension Orshin Monastery. But in 1996 he was awarded a new title - the Tver St. Catherine's Convent. In 2001, according to old photographs, the bell tower was restored, which made the appearance of the monastery bright and complete.

What to watch

St. Catherine's Monastery is a synthesis of temples of the pre-Petrine time and the baroque style fashionable in the 17-18 centuries. It has a classic shape - an octagon on a quadrangle. An apse with 5 sides was added on one side, and a wide refectory and a three-tier hipped bell tower on the other. The dome of the Catherine's Church is round, high, repeating the shape of an 8-sided light drum. Both the temple and the bell tower at the top end with graceful cupolas. The monastery is surrounded by a powerful stone fence with turrets.

The icon and the ark with the relics of the Great Martyr Catherine are kept in the monastery. This is a rare fact for Russia. The relics came to the temple quite by accident, because the original is in the ancient monastery of St. Catherine in Sinai and is no longer distributed.

On the territory there are also auxiliary buildings where the nuns live, a children's evening school and theological courses. The monastery has two courtyards. Several icons of the Most Holy Theotokos are considered to be shrines of the monastery, among them there is a rare one - “Do not cry for me, mother”, as well as the icon of the Beheading of John the Baptist. In the St. Nicholas Church, particles of the relics of numerous saints, the image of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker and the “Vydropusskaya” icon of the Mother of God are preserved. Each icon has its own wonderful story.
