Colombian girl won't get into bed with you until you meet her father

In fat "zero" our people discovered almost all the nooks and crannies of the planet. South America was no exception. The Russians have reached out to Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Venezuela, Chile... But Colombia continues to be a mystery to the majority. The fault is a terrible reputation. Drug lords, poverty, crime, civil war, the lack of the benefits of civilization - about such associations this country evokes in us. Nevertheless, about two thousand of our compatriots permanently live in the capital Bogota alone. Express Gazeta correspondent Yevgeny MISHIN flew to Colombia to look into what was there and how. And at the same time, ask your compatriots why they were frightened into such a hole.

Misha and I, dressed as US Marines, are standing on the threshold of the Ministry building. environment and development in Colombia, where ten minutes ago they put up a sign "U.S. Embassy". The mansion was rented by the American company Netflix, which is filming in Colombia the third season of the famous Hollywood series Narcos about the life of a drug lord. Pablo Escobar. Mexican director Guillermo Navarro fussing, giving instructions:

Both of you are on the line, but when Pedro ( American-Chilean actor Pedro Pascal, familiar to the Russian audience from the series "Game of Thrones" and "Motherland"; in Narcos he plays Detective Peña.- EAT.) leaves the building and gets into the car, you follow him with your eyes.

The tiny three-minute episode is filmed all day long. The director is not satisfied with the dialogue of the main characters. We stand like idols and try not to freeze - the average daily temperature in Bogota is 15 degrees: the capital was built in the Cordillera - more than 2.5 km above sea level. The guys who were dressed in camouflage and handed out dummies of the M16 were more fortunate. When the director says "Motor", they start walking around the territory with a greyhound look and look into the window of a passing car. At least it's not cold and my legs don't get numb.

During the break, I take a rifle from one of the “special forces”. Like the real thing, only light. Suddenly, the dummy falls off and with a roar falls on the asphalt shop. One of the producers goes berserk, promising to remove him from the set next time. They kick you out here for selfies that you want to take every time you are made up and dressed in unusual clothes.

I starred in the Narcos extras four times and each time I met several Russians at once. For a shooting day here they pay from 35 to 60 dollars - not bad by local standards. The amount of the fee depends on the agent who brought you to the set.

Russian Dima pays well, next time come through him. Amerikos Steven - medium, it is also possible through him. But don’t mess with the Turk Sertach, the fee is minimal, - Misha explains to me.

Colombians get less for a shooting day - about 30 dollars. The appearance of a gringo (white foreigner) in Colombia is a big advantage. They call to act not only in extras, but also in commercials. And there the salary is much higher.

Acting career, however, is not the main source of income for Russians. Most of our compatriots teach English in Colombia. Level foreign languages Colombians (even teachers) are below the plinth, so even with a B2 level, it is quite possible to find a job in a private school. Salaries - from 600 to 1200 dollars, which allows you to live quite tolerably: prices in Colombia are noticeably lower than in Russia. For example, you can rent a "odnushka" in Bogota for $ 300, a room - and even cheaper.

Family values

Most of the Russian girls I met in Colombia married Colombians. Recently, a heated discussion has unfolded on the Facebook community "Russians in Colombia" about what the local men are like compared to ours. In the end, we came to the conclusion that there is no difference. Colombians, like Russians, pay for women in restaurants ($16 lunch for two), know how to look after them beautifully, give flowers (a hefty bouquet of excellent roses - less than two bucks), like to watch football and drink with friends in bars. The only difference is in relation to the family. Colombians cultivate super-strong family ties, constantly hanging out not only with mom and dad, but also with other numerous relatives.

Weekends are busy with endless events with Pedro's parents, - Muscovite Anna complains, - we go to a restaurant, then we travel, then we go shopping. It is impossible to stay alone with your husband for an hour!

Colombian girls are beautiful, keenly interested in foreigners and, in general, much more emotional than Russian women. Like men, they are very close to their family and relatives. After the first date, 22-year-old brown-eyed Alejandra dragged me to her home to introduce me to her parents, brothers and sisters. The family council arranged a real interrogation for me, during which it turned out, by the way, that one of Alejandra's brothers was a postgraduate student at the Physics Department of Moscow State University, married a Muscovite and stayed in Russia.

Parents always want to know who I spend time with, Alejandra explained. “If you don’t meet your dad, he won’t let me go to meet you again.”

Colombians are actively interested in foreigners. In public places, they often speak first, ask questions, strive to communicate. Most people know only a few facts about Russia. The first thing that surprises them is the cold. In the country of eternal summer, ordinary Moscow minus 20 is perceived as the North Pole. The second is vodka, which Russians drink in its purest form. Although some assured me that they read Dostoevsky and traveled around our country.

Opinions about Russians vary. The taxi driver, having learned that I was from Russia, looked with undisguised bewilderment:

I heard Russians are bad.

I don't know, never met. But I heard something.

Many who have encountered Russians note one main feature- directness, which in Colombia is most often perceived as rudeness.

We are completely different, - says Luis Perez, working in the international organization AIESEC, every year bringing dozens of foreign trainees to Colombia, including from Russia. - You all speak directly, in the forehead, regardless of whether these things are good or bad. We can't do that.

What's on their mind?

Colombians are politeness and delicacy itself. It's okay to start the request with a convoluted structure like, "Can I kindly ask you to do me a huge favor?" Rudeness is completely absent. Everyone, from salesmen, doctors and police officers, is exceptionally polite and friendly, always smiling and happy to help. Moreover, unlike the United States, you do not feel that this is insincere. The most unpleasant thing for a Colombian is to upset his neighbor. This medal, however, has a downside. All the Russians I met used their last words to scold Colombian politeness and indirectness. Yes, no one will ever offend you, for everyone you are an “amigo”, but you won’t understand what is really on a person’s mind. Colombians will promise mountains of gold - just to please the interlocutor, but they will never even think about implementing the promise. This applies not only to personal, but also business relationships.

A year ago, I was looking for a job as a teacher, went to interviews at universities. Two rectors swore to me that I was the perfect candidate and they would be happy to hire me. But they didn’t even call back,” says 24-year-old Alena.

It is curious that the Colombian Russians are divided and practically do not maintain contacts. Unlike the stubborn Ukrainians-zapadentsev who regularly meet and organize their comical Bandera events in embroidered shirts.

The Colombian government is jumping out of its pants to get rid of its reputation as one of the most dangerous countries in the world and attract tourists. From this point of view, there is little that can compare with Colombia. Amazing natural diversity. Eternal summer. National parks. colonial cities. coffee plantations. Gorgeous Caribbean beaches. Amazon jungle. Cheap food and fruits. But the main thing is people: Colombians will do everything to make you feel at home anywhere. Seeing your confusion in the bank, they will help you fill out the form. If you're hungry, they'll feed you.

You will also be treated to nightclubs - you just have to get to know the locals. Colombians go to clubs in large groups and buy inside (at exorbitant prices!) A bottle of strong alcohol - usually local aguardiente(aniseed vodka) or tequila. When you get to know someone from the company, in five minutes you are already poured, and sometimes it is more difficult to refuse the drink than in Russia. And it will be impossible not to get acquainted, because foreigners are always in the spotlight.

The local cuisine is very diverse. There are so many fruits that I don’t even remember the names of many. Lots of delicious cornmeal food. Say arepas- cakes with cheese. Or empanadas - pies with different fillings. Rice Colombians put anywhere. The most exotic dishes I've tried are fried guinea pig and cheese ice cream. Tin! Or here's another - chicharrones, pig skin chips. Delicious, but don't eat too much. And the locals are not indifferent to carcinogens - wildly overcooked sausages, meat and chickens are sold everywhere.

Dangerous mix

Colombians from different regions are very different from each other. In Bogotá, people are the calmest. The costenos (those who live on the coast) smile more, are always relaxed, and have a reputation for being irresponsible fun-loving and party-goers.

Our team worked on a joint project,” recalls Carlos, an English teacher at one of the schools. - Everyone did his part, then they had to be united. At some point, Pedro, a native of Cartagena, was missed. Someone said let's go to the bar next door. We went in - there drunken Pedro in the company of other costenos plays dominoes! We say: Pedro, come back, hand over the project tomorrow. He just brushes it off: “There is still time! I'll do it tonight - don't worry! I threw it, of course.

Foreign teachers in Colombian schools are in for a culture shock. Children are absolutely uncontrollable: they run around the tables, fight, do not obey - this behavior is considered normal. Teenagers smoke marijuana and freely approach attractive teachers - both men and women. Colombians grow up early, you can freely discuss sex, politics or economics with high school students. Often there are pregnant 15-year-old girls in school uniforms.

In Colombia, you can meet people of all skin colors. 70 percent are mestizos, descendants of mixed marriages of Indians and whites. There are enough mulattoes, and purebred whites (great-great-grandchildren of the Spanish colonizers), and Indians, and blacks (descendants of slaves brought from Africa). Unlike neighboring Brazil, where skin color is the last thing an interlocutor will pay attention to, in Colombia, whites and blacks are kept apart: mixed marriages between them are rare. At the same time, as the Colombian proverb says, "If you have not tried a black woman, you will not go to heaven."

And the Indians, and the Spanish conquistadors, and Negro slaves had a significant impact on the culture of Colombia, including painting, literature and music. Colombians do not favor European music, most often they play something local on the streets or in clubs - salsa, cumbia, vallenato. The most popular music among young people is reggaeton, something like Latin American hip-hop. Reggaeton in Colombia sounds literally from every iron. Lyrics are often very frank and overflowing with profanity.

How to dance reggaeton? At first, this plunges foreigners into shock. The locals call this dance "perreo" (from the Spanish "perro" - dog), and it mainly consists in the fact that the girl turns her back to you and begins to actively rub her booty. Colombian women love and know how to dance perreo and will definitely demonstrate this skill when you find yourself in a local nightclub. After this, a second shock may await the foreigner - such a frank dance is not a reason to get acquainted, and a girl who has just rubbed against you can fly away when you try to talk to her.

cocaine hell

Half of Colombians live below the poverty line. Nowhere in the world have I seen so many homeless people. Medicine is expensive, even "ambulance" only for money.

One of the first questions people come to Colombia ask is street crime. Of course, Latin American metropolitan areas are not the safest place in the world. In Bogota, Medellin or Cartagena, you can lose valuables as a result of an armed attack or the work of pickpockets. However, from Brazil, where they brazenly rob in broad daylight, Colombia is different for the better. If you follow basic precautions, most likely nothing bad will happen to you.

The civil war, which for many years did not allow the economy to develop, also ended. The government recently signed an agreement with the left-wing rebel group FARC, which in its prime years controlled up to a third of the country. Of course, it is better not to meddle in the remote jungle even now, but hostilities are no longer being waged. And foreigners have not been kidnapped for several years.

But until recently, FARC and their worst enemies - the paramilitares detachments created with the support of the government - did not let people live. The family of my girlfriend Alejandra, like many wealthy Colombians, has a suburban "Finca" - a small farm where they go for the weekend. About ten years ago, paramilitares came to the head of the family and demanded a monthly tribute. The father refused. The next day, the thugs killed all the farm workers. Until now, despite all the peace agreements and agreements, Alejandra's family never stays on the farm at night.

The authorities are going out of their way to ensure that Colombia ceases to be a world center for drug trafficking. With the support of the Americans, they managed to defeat the notorious Medellin cartel, led by Pablo Escobar, and the very "el boss" - to eliminate. The Police Museum in the historical part of Bogota displays his weapons arsenal, a motorcycle and other interesting exhibits. Dope production is moving to Central America, mainly Mexico. Nevertheless, drugs are a very hot commodity in Colombia. A gram of marijuana costs 1.5 dollars, cocaine - six. Bags of white powder are offered to passers-by right on the street. Poison is very popular among young people. At the same time, Colombians may be offended by jokes about cocaine, like many of us, if a foreigner began to mock a Russian birch.

Many Colombians are devout Catholics. Of course, today's youth don't give a damn about religion, but Catholic holidays are popular with everyone. Especially - Mother's Day, an analogue of our March 8th. They also love Candle Day here: on December 7, everyone goes out into the street with candles in honor of the Immaculate Conception of the Most Holy Theotokos.

At the nearest gas station, by the way, an inflatable "Papa Noel" - Santa Claus - was installed a long time ago. In all the parks there are illuminated spruces, only snow is missing. Artificial Christmas trees also sparkle in the windows of houses - "forest beauties" are not for sale here. Familiar Colombians were interested in when a live Christmas tree is thrown away in Russia. When they learned that some do it in April, they laughed a lot. Christmas, here, as a rule, is celebrated with family, but New Year is celebrated among friends.

* Russians do not need a visa to visit Colombia for up to three months. If you decide to hang out longer, you can get it at the embassy. Important points: the passport must have three blank pages, and photocopies of the internal passport must be translated into English.

* Domestic prices in this country will pleasantly surprise you. But the prices for the plane will upset you: no matter how you turn it, you will have to pay about a “piece of greenery” for a round-trip.

Colombia is the third most populous country in Latin America (after Brazil and Mexico). In total, about 47 million people live in the country, which received its name in honor of the discoverer of the American continent. Also, one million Colombians live in the United States, making up the largest South American national diaspora in this country.

In the rubric, brave and active girls who once were not afraid to leave their comfort zone and move to another country for permanent residence share inspiring stories of life abroad. About distant, exotic, extraordinary Colombia with its tallest palm trees in the world, the most delicious coffee, the most beautiful girls, the hottest men, the wildest jungles of the Amazon and the most turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea, Katya Buluy, a Ukrainian woman who left for the capital of Colombia five years ago, tells Bogotá to learn Spanish.

Grade

Katya is 32 years old, she works as a teacher and often travels around Latin America: Mexico, Cuba, Peru, Amazonia. Recently I was in Brazil - fabulous Rio de Janeiro. Katya actively talks about everyday life in Bogotá, the life of ordinary Colombians and Bogotians, local institutions, local cuisine, travels and incredible places in Colombia on her Instagram, accompanying colorful photos useful information, hilarious notes and everyday reasoning about the simple and the important.

Katya Buluy, 32 years old History teacher

Hey! My name is Katya Buluy, I am a sociologist by education. Moved to Colombia - scary to say! — more than five years ago. My plane landed on Latin American soil on December 25, 2011 - exactly on Catholic Christmas. I have always lived and live in the capital of Colombia - Bogotá. I wouldn't trade it for any other Colombian city. I work as a World History teacher in grades 7, 8 and 9 in a private gymnasium.

I think it was not me who chose Colombia, but she chose me. Otherwise, I cannot explain how it happened. Initially, the plan was simple: spend three months here and speak Spanish, which I began to learn long before the trip. Although, in general, I dreamed of going to Mexico, but it turned out to be Colombia. Yes, and I didn’t really like it at first ... After a year of living in Bogota, I wanted to collect for a return ticket and dump it home. But some inner feeling haunted me and made me give a second chance to this country. And that's where it all started! Of course, eternal summer, nature, fruits - everything that comes to mind when you talk about Colombia attracts from the first meeting. And as long as you are a tourist, and there is money on the card, everything is ok. But it’s a completely different matter to live and work, travel in transport, sort out visa problems ... Not everyone succeeds. But Colombia is worth it! Now I'll tell you why.

WHAT ARE COLUMBIANS?

People here are so pleasant and kind in communication that they instantly fall in love with themselves with their simplicity and fun, with their relaxed attitude to life. At the same time, Colombians are complex and diverse. It's not easy to describe them all in one fell swoop. Coastal dwellers are very different from the Cachacos (Bogotins), and those living in the Amazon are not at all like the cafeteros-paisas (inhabitants of the Paisa region in northwestern Colombia), who are famous for their sense of humor, sharp tongue and optimism. Paysas never speak with a sad or preoccupied look! Just laughter and jokes. Even in the worst situation, they will try to find the positive.

Posted by Katya Buluy (@galamaga) Mar 17, 2017 at 7:27 PDT

However, you can see common features that cannot be avoided. Colombians are resilient nihilists (you can sometimes call it laziness) who are in a hurry to get anywhere. Favorite word is mañana (" tomorrow " ), which in conversation often means: “Don’t worry, we’ll do everything tomorrow!” Sometimes it means never. Big jokers. Easy to communicate. Attractive. But I still can’t put up with the fact that they are, well, too noisy, and in conversation they constantly interrupt each other. These are not conversations of three or four people, but separate noisy monologues, laughter and din. At the same time, when it seems that no one understands and hears each other, they are all happy. I also don't like that Colombians can't live without soda. When you are visiting someone or at a holiday, the first thing they will offer you is Coca-Cola. And it annoys me that they walk in shoes at home. I taught my acquaintances and friends to take off their shoes in my apartment: everyone knows that at Katya’s house you need to change your shoes into slippers and think in advance about clean socks without holes.

Posted by Katya Buluy (@galamaga) May 3, 2017 at 7:18 PDT

But if we compare the locals with people from the post-Soviet space, then “ours” stand out: we are very serious, we are constantly preoccupied with something, we often even have a gloomy face ... When I show photos of my older brother to my Colombian friends and colleagues, they they begin to be afraid. Is there really such a gap between us? “Probably, this is all the influence of a harsh climate, cold and long winters, vodka and Dostoevsky,” is the most common and, in general, not a bad explanation. But it will not be possible to write off our gloominess on a complicated history, because the Latin countries have never been easy either - neither in the past, nor now.

Posted by Katya Buluy (@galamaga) May 10, 2017 at 7:18 PDT

We have a lot to learn from the Colombians: cheerfulness and the ability not to lose heart in any circumstances, to joke always and everywhere - they know how to dilute even the most serious topic with simplicity of communication and humor. And Colombian Spanish is the key to understanding the mentality, lifestyle and thinking of the locals. Phrases that you cannot do without in this country:

Todo bien - "It's okay! All OK! Off!"

Pa delante - "Only forward, do not look back, everything will be as it should."

Parce - "Dude, sidekick, friend, buddy."

¿Bien o que? - "Everything is fine!" Or: "Is everything okay?" Such a question does not leave the opportunity to answer that everything is bad.

Muñeca, mi amor, linda, mami, papi, mamaíta, mi corazón - “doll”, “my love”, “beautiful”, “mommy”, “daddy”, “my heart” are affectionate tender words that are used for everyone and always. Such a cute feature of Colombians.

COLOMBIAN BEAUTY

The most desirable and popular “beauty set” for Colombians: thick and long straight hair, slightly dark skin - such, you know, a delicate shade of cinnamon, white and even teeth, wide hips and slim waist, prominent chest, small neat nose. This is the standard that attracts - and these are the girls who win beauty contests. 100% Colombian beauties! The perfect mix of strong dominant Indian blood and a touch of Spanish.

Posted by Katya Buluy (@galamaga) Sep 12, 2017 at 3:51 PDT

Colombians really like light eyes and hair, high growth. Why? Because there are not many fair-haired and light-eyed people here, and this type of beauty arouses curiosity. For example, in Ukraine I― brunette with brown eyes, the most usual average height. And here is a thin, tall, pale-skinned girl with honey-colored eyes. I am sometimes referred to as mona - “blonde, light, white”, although to blonde I am like to the moon and back. But, of course, no matter how visually attractive local men are tall skinny, in the end, most of them will vote for a cute plump with prominent hips. So we're used to it here- that's beauty. Women and their husbands do not spare money for and chest. The most desperate can even remove a couple of ribs - for a greater resemblance to the "hourglass", and then fit their luxurious forms with tight jeans so that everyone knows what's what.

Posted by Katya Buluy (@galamaga) Apr 8, 2017 at 6:27 PDT

Since the locals did not work out with growth, tall people attract attention. Anyone who is even slightly taller than 170 cm is called a model. Los paisas - almost without exception, the descendants of the Spaniards, Germans, French. Indian communities were completely ousted from the territory, so blue-eyed tall men are much more common here. These are often referred to as guadua, that is, "bamboo". But my favorite is caldo de guadua, bamboo soup. Parents feed their children with this dish so that they grow tall and thin. I'm kidding, of course! But the expression is still very funny, as for me. Mama te da caldo de guadua por la mañana o qué? “Mom feeds you with bamboo soup in the morning, or what?” Like, why are you so tall and skinny?

Bogota is not Paris. Not so much with fashion. I remember, in Kyiv, every morning in the subway I looked at beautifully dressed girls and guys, usually they were followed by a train of elegant perfumes!.. Forget about it if you are in Bogotá. Here, people are not used to showing off and spending their entire salary on clothes. Even the rich dress modestly. Young guys are just trying to keep up with the trends. There are good brands of clothes and shoes, but for many... How can I say this without offending anyone? There is not enough sense of style, or something ... In principle, I do not see a problem in this. They dress as they can and know how, and do not turn clothes into a headache. The most common clothing is jeans, sweater, jacket or windbreaker. In Bogota, many girls frankly do not like dresses and skirts. This is due to the cool climate of the capital.Every Bogotanian carries an umbrella and a scarf in his bag, and the most favorite footwear is boots. During the day, the temperature in Bogotá rises to +25, and in the evening it can drop to +5.

Where it's hot, the clothes are different: short light dresses, tight-fitting shorts and jeans with open tops. Remember, they need to show their hips! For example, in the salsa capital of Cali, a city in western Colombia, heels are a must! Here the night is saturated with sensuality, sexuality and undisguised desire. In a hipster dress below the knee and converse, I felt like mosca en leche (“a fly in milk”), that is, out of my element.

MACHISTAS

Machismo is still alive and well in Colombia. No matter how local girls and women try to fight it, the roots of this phenomenon sit too deep. According to statistics, 40% of Colombian men are sure that the task of a woman is to take care of children and the kitchen. Machistas consider women to be dumber than men, believing that girls are unable to fend for themselves or work. Many Colombian guys are simply obliged to have a mamasita next to them, that is, a beauty, so that they are not ashamed in front of their friends, and whether she is smart is the tenth thing, and so it goes. And, of course, there are those who are enough for two or three mamasit at once, and not one of the girls suspects the existence of the other. What are the specs, right?

Machistas still receive a higher salary than women, and it does not matter that a colleague Diana does the same work faster and better ... But more and more often, the offended voice of girls is heard who do not agree with this state of affairs. They study, provide for themselves, do their job well, drive cars, ride motorcycles, do not rush to get married and, naturally, begin to demand an appropriate attitude towards themselves. And this is good news, because thanks to them, more and more serious and good guys appear, for whom relationships are, first of all, responsibility, and they are looking for the same serious and intelligent girl. But for the sake of truth, it must be said that there are senoritas who even encourage male machismo: they don’t want to study or work, but they quickly look for a husband, give birth to children and wait for a man to provide them ... In general, they don’t strain much.

Everyone is, of course, familiar with the stereotype that Latin men are hot guys. Although this is a stereotype, it is very applicable in life. Yes, they are more emotional than Europeans, amorous, many become obsessed with their girlfriend. There is even the concept of "amor posesivo" - something like "possessive love." This is expressed in distrust, constant calls and control:a girl can't go anywhere alone, let alone go somewhere for the weekend with her friends. In a word, the reduction of freedom. But even as boyfriends, Colombians are elegant and show their feelings in every possible way. Do not be shy. They are very proud of their chosen one. Get to know your parents quickly. They give gifts, know how to beautifully look after and fall in love with themselves.

HOW IT IS LIVING IN COLOMBIA

Social problems are very acute here. The unequal distribution of wealth is especially felt in large cities. According to statistics, Colombia ranks fourth in terms of socio-economic inequality of the population among the countries of Latin America. The situation is encouraged by the state.Colombia is a country where you know exactly what social class you belong to. This is written on every bill for water, gas, electricity and the Internet, and is called estrato social, or simply estrato - “social layer”. There are six of them in total: 1 - bajo-bajo, 2 - bajo, 3 - medio-bajo, 4 - medio, 5 - medio-alto, 6 - alto. The word bajo translates as "low", medio means "medium", and alto means "high".

Posted by Katya Buluy (@galamaga) Jun 28, 2017 at 7:26 PDT

The division into estratos appeared in Colombia in the 80s as an idea to help the poor to cope with paying utility bills. Representatives of the first, second and third estratos pay less than they spend. To tell the truth, the first layer hardly pays at all - the amount there is purely symbolic. In Bogota, for example, only 10% of the inhabitants honestly pay the communal apartment - those who live in the 4 estratos area. Everyone else is either underpaid or overpaid. Estratos 5 and 6 should not only pay for themselves, but also partially cover the utility costs of estratos 1, 2 and 3. Such is Colombian socialism.

This topic is a little complicated, and you can’t figure it out right away. Foreigners are at first shocked by such a clear division into poor and rich, “sucky” and “cool”. But things quickly fall into place once you start working and making friends in Colombia. Often such a social division reaches the point of absurdity. In Colombia, people from the first or second estrato do not intersect with people from the fifth or sixth at all. No, I'm lying! They serve them coffee in their offices and clean their homes. In Bogota, all shopping centers are divided into estratos, and the prices in them, of course, are the same. There are even popular expressions to this effect: “Se le notó estrato!” - talk about people with bad taste or poorly educated; or "El es de estrato 50" - when someone has a lot of money. At the same time, about 20% of the people in Colombia live in complete poverty, and all the wealth is in the hands of a few - three or four - families that practically govern Colombia.

Minimum wage in Colombia― about 300$. A good income is $700-800 per month or more. Cool - getting more than a thousand bucks. With such an income, you can pay for an apartment on your own, save money, travel, take a car loan and so on ... Since the whole of Bogotá is divided into estratos, this also affects the cost of housing. For example, a studio apartment in the fourth estrato costs about $300, the same one in the second or third estrato is rented for $200, and in the fifth or sixth estrato it costs $500 and more.

More examples: 2gb of mobile Internet with a decent amount of minutes and SMS per month costs $14. Home Internet with unlimited 20gb in a package with TV and home phone - about $50 per month. The bus fare is $0.80 and the minimum taxi route is $1.50. Coffee - $1 per cup in Bogota. I mean the Colombian chains of coffee houses Juan Valdez and Oma, and in small towns and villages I found amazingly delicious coffee for $0.15. A pound of a good steak is $2-3. Half a kilo of squid for less than $2. Baton (bread that looks like a loaf, to be honest) - $ 1.

EDUCATION

The problem with education in Colombia is that it divided into private and public . Like the estratos system, this creates inequality. Unfortunately, most Colombian public schools are in a "sit and cry" state. Therefore, children from poor families are isolated from prospects and opportunities. It turns out that those who have the money to pay for a private school will be the winners, and those who do not have it - sorry, move over ... But there are pleasant exceptions. They are few, but they do exist. In general, for many middle-class parents, the worst nightmare is not being able to pay for a more or less good school and being forced to give their “beloved bead” to the state.

The attitude towards children in Colombia is very sweet: they are loved, they are given gifts, they allow a lot, they don’t scold them - especially on the streets in front of strangers. But, on the other hand, they do not focus on discipline, order, do not teach to help parents. They give a certain freedom while they are small. They are happy to start a conversation about their child with strangers, they are proud of the baby. But for an already matured teenager, the requirements are changing. Parents are waiting for returns: to study well, not to get involved with bad companies. Support in the desire to enroll in the football section or language courses. You can often see how parents get up early on Sunday morning to take the child to sports on the other side of the city.

IS COLOMBIA SAFE?

In Bogota, Medellin, Cali and other big cities, anything can happen, just like in any other metropolis. But there is no need to panic and be afraid, not everything is so scary: it turns out that Colombia is safer than Rio, where millions of tourists come. Be sure to follow the usual safety rules:

do not wave iPhones strongly;

do not engage in conversation with suspicious strangers;

At 20-21.00 it is better to be at the hotel.

But don't take these tips literally. Young people here also go to discos and restaurants, people meet in pubs ... And I go. And at nine o'clock in the evening I walk the streets. It’s just better not to risk it if you are new here and you can see that you are a tourist. Very safe in small towns and villages― "Make yourself at home". This is how things are in the villages of the Coffee Region. I sometimes travel alone - I was recently in Medellin, went there for the second time and without a company. As you can see, everything is fine with me! Colombians in general adore tourists, they are always happy to help, take-bring, good-natured and responsive. So there won't be any problems. I always feel surrounded by attention and care here.

The painful question of the civil war is still making itself felt, but is already subsiding. In Bogota and other big cities, we only knew about the civil war on TV. The areas where people have really been affected are far from standard tourist routes, though that doesn't mean there's nothing to see there. Of course, for most Colombians, the official truce and the end of the war is a great achievement and relief. The country is very tired and is now beginning to live in a new way. Although there are still political parties that are trying to turn society against the peace process. I believe that the most important thing has already happened, and these are just inappropriate political games, provocations and an unscrupulous attitude towards the people of Colombia.

LOCAL FOOD

Tourists in Colombia have no problem with food and restaurants: locals have not learned how to cheat or do something just for visitors. Everyone eats at the same places, so you shouldn't be disappointed with the food. Be sure to try authentic Colombian dishes:

bandeha paisawill not leave you indifferent: the ubiquitous rice in Colombia is served with stewed beans, a fried egg, a piece of avocado and several types of meat;

ajiaco- thick potato soup with chicken, rice, capers, avocado and sour cream. For me personally, these dishes are the most delicious in local cuisine;

for breakfast you need to take at least once caldo de costilla(caldo de costilla) - rich broth with beef ribs, potatoes and cilantro. This is a typical Colombian breakfast;

Posted by Katya Buluy (@galamaga) Sep 1, 2017 at 6:53 PDT

hot chocolate with cheese- something like French fondue: pieces of cheese are thrown into a cup of hot chocolate, it melts and softens there, and then the whole thing is eaten with a spoon. It turns out very tasty. And satisfying;

famous Colombian asado(asado) is a huge dish filled to the brim with grilled meat (pork, calf, chiguiro, ribs, beef) with potatoes and guacamole. No big holiday or even a wedding is complete without this dish!

Necessarily - ceviche and mojara- it's about the fish. Ceviche is a seafood cocktail, and mohara is a red-colored fish, like our crucian carp, but not him. In short, you have to take and try.

The Colombians themselves are unpretentious and eat rice with rice on rice. Kidding! But yes, rice is everywhere and there is plenty of it. Every mother and grandmother has freshly cooked rice on the stove. And to it they can fry an egg or a piece of meat, stew beans or chicken, boil lentils. These products, in principle, are the basic diet of any Colombian. They are not very friendly with vegetables. Vegetables are mostly eaten boiled or fried rather than fresh. For example, fried bananas - plane trees, or boiled cassava - it looks like potatoes. Colombians call cassava "yuca".

There will never be a problem with fruits in Colombia, because here you can find everything you want, except for berries such as raspberries, poriches (currants) or agrus (gooseberries). Although I ate raspberries a couple of times. Papaya, passion fruit, gwanavana, chontaduro, zapote, yoke, curuban, luloone of the brightest and most sour tropical fruits... The list is endless, and I still find fruits that I have not tried.

From the exotic - in Colombia you can try huge fried goosebumps from the San Thunder region. They taste like peanuts and go great with beer. Locals also love fritanga - fried pork innards. What I think about this dish is better to keep silent. I advise you to try freshly squeezed sugarcane juice with lime squeezed into it and coconut lemonade - so delicious that it can take you to heaven.

COLOMBIAN COFFEE

If you are in Colombia, go to tinto (tinto).Once, in a nice cafe, I saw tinto and americano on the menu at the same time. In practice, this is the same thing - just black coffee, but for a Colombian - no! The hostess explained to me that if you write on the menu only" Americano " , everyone will keep asking: “Is there a tinto?”.

Posted by Katya Buluy (@galamaga) Sep 24, 2017 at 9:00 PDT

Tinto in Colombia is a lifestyle. They visit Tinto. On a tinto in the nearest cafe, employees run away from the office. For tinto, important matters are decided, difficult decisions are made and love dramas happen. And do not confuse with café - in this case, you will be brought coffee with milk. Or with tinto campesino, which is coffee already sweetened with sugar cane. The name campesino (peasant) was given to the drink because this is how Colombian peasants drink coffee.from this coffee turns out "peasantly".

You can also ask for chocolate caliente - hot chocolate, or aguadepanela - "sweet water", but this is no longer tinto-style. Hot chocolate drink for breakfast, at home, in the family circle. And aguadepanela - in the evening, when the sun hides behind the Andes, and coolness begins to blow from the mountains. Then they put a small saucepan of water on the stove, throw in a piece of cane sugar, boil the whole thing, and then squeeze the juice of a couple of lemons into an already hot drink and warm themselves, drinking in small sips of burning Colombian "compote".

WHAT TO SEE IN COLOMBIA

Colombia is one of the few countries in the world where there is everything: the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, the Caribbean Sea, the Amazon jungle, the desert, the mountain ranges and snowy peaks of the Andes, the unique Los Paramos eco-system ...So, where to go and what to see in Colombia?

An hour from Bogotá and you are in El bosque de neblina Chicaque - Foggy forest.

Posted by Katya Buluy (@galamaga) Feb 16, 2017 at 6:26 AM PST

Andes! Mountains are everywhere - and they are beautiful.

Nice coffee town Salento (where you can see how and who grows coffee) with the world's tallest palm trees in the Wax Palm Valley (Valle de Cocora, Los Nevados National Park). These palms are the national tree of Colombia. They grow up to 80 meters, while in a year they can lengthen by only 15 centimeters. Imagine how long it takes for one tree to grow to at least 50-60 meters!

The Pacific Ocean on one side and the Caribbean Sea on the other. Necessarily turquoise heavenly Caribbean: once the largest slave port of Cartagena, the beautiful Tairona National Park. Caribbean islands as from pictures of magazines - Islas San Andres y Providencia. A very cool place in Guajira is when the desert meets the ocean.

Amazon and its jungle - love forever! This is a place of power, no comment here. You can read more about the trip to the Amazon under the tag.

Since the civil war has already ended, you can go to the Pacific coast, to Choco - this is one of the wettest tropical regions in the world. Panama is nearby, there are many local communities of Indians, a well-known stretch of difficult jungle - the Darien Gap, because of which the construction of the Pan-American Highway was stopped. And huge turtles come there to lay their eggs, and big blue whales come to rest.

Each people of the world has its own characteristics, which are absolutely normal and ordinary for them, but if a person of a different nationality gets into their midst, he may be very surprised at the habits and traditions of the inhabitants of this country, because they will not coincide with his own ideas about life. We invite you to find out 10 national habits and characteristics of Colombians that may seem surprising and a little strange to the inhabitants of Russia.

They refer to each other as "you"

Colombians are not a people who stand on ceremony with each other, but there are features in their manner of communication that will surely surprise a foreigner. One of them is to address each other on "you" (usted). For example: "¿Que tal ha dormido usted esta noche?" (“How did you sleep today?”). This habit is common in most regions of the country, with the possible exception of the Caribbean. On "you" in Colombia, peers, and children to parents, and parents to children, and even owners to their pets turn to each other. This is not so much a tribute to the addressee as a habit adopted from childhood, thanks to which everyday regional Spanish sounds something special.

They are all related to each other.

The pronoun “you” and the corresponding form of the verb are often accompanied in Colombia by such expressions as mamita (“mommy”), papi (“daddy”), mi hijo (“my son”), and other words denoting one or another degree of relationship. These appeals apply to everyone, including strangers. Do not be surprised if an elderly stranger whom you ask for directions to the right place answers you: "Mamita, you are three blocks down and two blocks to the right." This is common in Colombia.

They freeze in the capital

The Colombians, spoiled by the sun and heat, moving from the regions to the capital - Bogota, called this city nevera ("refrigerator"). Bogota is one of the highest cities in the country, it is located at an altitude of 2600 m above sea level, so it is colder here than in other regions of the country and it rains periodically. The average temperature of the Colombian "refrigerator" is + 15-20 ° C throughout the year (it would seem that the weather is perfect!). But even in such a climate, you can see people in warm jackets (similar to those worn in Russia in late autumn), demi-season boots and scarves. This is explained not so much by the physical sensation of cold (after all, the human body gets used to everything - and quite quickly), but by the mental fear of cold and different kind precipitation.

More coffee they like cocoa

Throughout the world, Colombia is associated with coffee. But let's not forget that cocoa beans have been grown in this country since ancient times. Therefore, not with coffee, but with cocoa, many Colombians are used to starting their day. Cocoa is presented here in all possible forms: in raw or roasted beans, pieces by weight, in the form of powder and bars, with or without sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, cloves, allspice, varying degrees of bitterness, industrially produced or handmade and etc. Colombians usually make a drink with water and dilute it with a panel - which has gone through several stages of heat treatment and is eventually turned into a solid brown mass with sugar cane syrup. Colombians are more likely to drink coffee after lunch or during the merienda (“snack”), and many will completely refuse it.

They bless each other goodbye

Most of the population of the country are deeply believing in God and revering catholic church people. Moreover, not only, as we can assume, mature people believe and regularly go to church, but also many teenagers and young people. Hence the habit of Colombians to bless each other at parting. "Qué Dios lo bendiga" ("may the Lord bless you") or simply "Bendiciones" ("blessings") is a typical form of ending a conversation in Colombia.

On certain days they wear yellow t-shirts

The favorite sport in Colombia, as in most of Latin America, is football. On the days when the national team plays, many go out into the city in the uniform of the national team jerseys. In some network projects (mobile communication companies, network cafes, for example), employees are even obligated to the appropriate “bow” on game days.

They spend weekends and holidays with their family

To the question: “What is the most important thing in life?” - Colombians will not hesitate to answer: "Family!" Today, Colombian families average two or three children, and back in the mid-1990s, their number was seven. Going to Sunday service together, gathering at one's relatives' house for dinner on weekends and holidays is one of the most beloved and common activities among Colombians. You can imagine the scale of the events with so many brothers and sisters, uncles and aunts, all sorts of cousins and cousins, and other relatives.

They bear children to adulthood

In Colombia, no one is surprised by young mothers. According to statistics for 2015, about 19% of the total number of girls aged 14 to 18 already have children or are expecting their first child. Abortion in Colombia is prohibited by law, and a woman who has resorted to this procedure illegally is criminally liable and condemned by society.

Pregnancy and the birth of a child, in spite of any circumstances, is perceived by the local society as a divine blessing. With the consent of the parents, minors may marry. However, young girls tend to remain single mothers. The “culprit” is not punishable by law in any way, unless it is a pregnancy due to sexual violence. However, if the child is not recognized as the father of the child, the girl has the right to sue him and request alimony. However, bringing this procedure to the end and real material assistance, as a result, remain a big question.

They prefer corn tortillas to bread

If in Russia black or white bread is served with soups and main dishes, then in Colombia any meal is accompanied by arepas - tortillas made from ground white corn or corn flour with water. For their preparation, they use corn that is not familiar to us, yellow and sweetish in taste, and its other variety is light yellow, almost white, and fresh in taste. Various pastries are made from the same variety and it is used in many dishes as the main element.

Beans and rice are their favorite food

The second favorite crop of Colombians is rice. In addition to the fact that there are a number of traditional dishes (tamales, lechona, rice with coconut), which are based on this product, a small portion of it must be served with any soup, beans, lentils and meat. So do housewives at home in the kitchen, and cooks in restaurants. Rice, a crop brought to the continent by the Spanish conquistadors, has taken root well in the Colombian climate and has been actively grown since the 18th century in regions such as Huila, Tolima and Casanare. A kilogram of rice in Colombia is cheaper than beans, lentils or peas. In addition, rice (unlike beans and other legumes) is well compatible with almost all other foods. Actually, these factors explain the love of Colombians for this grain crop.

Colombian girls are known for their sensuality. The birthplace of beautiful women is located in the northwest of South America. Colombian girls are very independent, but at the same time they have traditional views. Independent Colombians are good housewives and caring wives.
