Many of the graduates who pass the 11th grade of the USE in English language refuse to take the oral part of this exam. This happens because they are afraid of not being able to handle it. Let's not hide the fact that even now in many schools in Russia, not all English teachers can prepare students for the exam. But this is not a reason to get upset and give up, because every motivated student is able to pass the exam himself for the maximum score.

To prepare for the written part, you can solve examples from training reference books, learn grammar rules, read texts, etc. And what about the oral part? What is the oral part of the exam? How does it go? And the main question: how to prepare? Let's sort it out in order.

Conducting an exam.


The oral and written parts of the exam in English are taken on different days. In 2019, the delivery of the oral part will take place before the written part: oral on June 13, and written on June 18. The formal delivery time is 15 minutes, i.е. you will have 15 minutes to complete the tasks and fill out the registration form.

The organization of the exam is the same as the OGE exam. There are waiting audiences and there are surrender audiences. Initially, graduates are assigned to waiting audiences. There they are instructed, and then wait for their turn in the exam room. The waiting time depends on the number of equipped classrooms for passing the exam and on the number of examinees. In the oral part of the exam in English, there are 4 tasks: reading the text, writing questions, a monologue description of the picture and comparing 2 photos. The first task is considered a basic level of difficulty, the second is an advanced level, but the third and fourth are a high level.

How many points can be scored for the oral part?

What to expect from the first task?

Common mistakes in this task are: incorrect pronunciation of words (most often numerals and geographical names), setting the wrong stress in words and distorted intonation.

To prepare for the first task, the graduate must learn the rules of reading, pronunciation and know the exceptions.

What mistakes are made in the second task?


In the second task, eleventh-graders are required to know how to write direct questions.

There is a situation in which the examinee is offered to immerse himself (for example: you came to a dance club or were going to go on an excursion). And to get complete information, the graduate needs to ask questions. After formulating the task, below, the topics on which you need to ask a question will be presented (for example: price, opening hours, location ...).

Common mistakes in this task are: composing questions that do not fit the stated topic, deviation from the plan of questions, grammatical errors, replacing questions with requests, using the pronoun It in the first question instead of designating the subject. For a complete understanding of the issue, in the first question you should mention the subject of your clarification. Also errors are the wrong word order, the omission of auxiliary verbs and the inconsistency of the subject and predicate.

How to prepare for the third task?


A smaller number of students cope with the third task, since it requires more preparation than the first and second ones. But, anyway, it is doable and if you understand it, then it may seem easy to someone.

There are three photographs that are allegedly kept in the graduate's album. Of these pictures, the student needs to choose only one and describe it, imagining that he is showing it to his friend. You need to describe the photo according to the plan that is presented in the task. The points of this plan include: where and when the photo was taken, who / what is shown on it, what is happening in the photo (holiday, walk, trip, etc.), the reason for storing this picture in an album and why the student decided to show the picture to a friend .

Common mistakes in this task are: a description of three pictures instead of one, a violation of the points of the plan for describing the picture, the absence of an appeal to the interlocutor (to a friend), the absence of introductory and final phrases, incorrect use of introductory structures, speech and grammatical errors.

Task 4: hard or easy?


It is believed that task 4 is the most difficult task of the oral part, as many experts and unprepared students say, and someone is ready to shout that it is generally impossible. But we are ready to argue with it. If the graduate knows the algorithm for preparing and completing this task, he will not have any difficulties.

The task is a comparison of two photographs / pictures. Given 2 pictures, a plan to follow for comparison.

Task 4

Study the two photographs. In 1.5 minutes be ready to compare and contrast the photographs:

Now I am going to compare and contrast these two photos.

To start with I should admit that holidays are an integral part of our life no matter where we live. And these two photos are the evidence of what I have said.

Both pictures show people celebrating Christmas.

The first photo depicts a company of six young people who are enjoying a holiday season on a sandy beach. They are wearing swimming suits, sunglasses and Santa's hats . I'm not sure but it seems to me that it is a team of life-guards. In the background of the picture you can see a decorated Christmas tree, a large inflatable snowman and Santa Claus.

As for the second picture it shows a young man and a young woman singing carols in the street which is beautifully decorated with lights. The weather is snowy and I suppose it's pretty cold outside because they are wearing warm clothes, gloves and scarves. Even their dog has got a warm jacket and a scarf and what makes me think(I've got a feeling) that these people are very caring and love their pet very much.

As I have mentioned before the main similarity(the most obvious similarity) between these pictures is a festive atmosphere of Christmas. Also I get the impression that people in picture 1 and picture 2 are of the same age and look very joyful. moreover, both pictures were taken outdoors (out-of-doors / in the open air).

Comparing these two pictures, I'd like to stress out that the most apparent (striking) difference between them is the season of the year. In the first photo the event might be taking place somewhere in Australia because Christmas Day usually falls in the middle of the summer in this country. in contrast, in the second picture you can see people in winter. I can only guess that they are probably British. besides, picture no 1 was taken during the day time, while picture No 2 was taken at night.

Methodological hint

Read the assignment carefully and familiarize yourself with the presented plan. You have 1 minute 30 seconds to prepare for this task. On its implementation (that is, the description of the photo) - 2 minutes. Choose one of the photographs offered for description. When choosing, be guided not by which photo you like, but by how familiar you are with the topic and vocabulary on it, and how much you can describe in it. Methodological hint

Read the assignment carefully and familiarize yourself with the presented plan. You have 1 minute 30 seconds to prepare for this task. When choosing, be guided not by which photo you like, but by how familiar you are with the topic and vocabulary on it, and how much you can describe in it. Important! The proposed plan does not include an introduction and conclusion, but they must be present, as you are offered to make a coherent, complete description of the photo, which in itself implies the presence of an introductory and final part.

For the introduction and conclusion, as well as for the answers to the first, fourth and fifth questions, several templates can be prepared in advance, which can be easily and quickly modified depending on the photo. A few tips:
1. It is always easier to talk about people you know, so imagine that your friends or relatives are in the photo, determine what family ties are between you, and give people names.
2. Important! Remember that this is not a story about what was happening in your life or in the lives of your relatives/friends at the time the photo was taken, but a description of what is happening in the photo.
