How to paint plastic from a spray can. Do-it-yourself painting of plastic car interior parts. Interior preparation and old paint treatment

Plastic things are constantly found in everyday life, because this material is environmentally friendly, cheap, strong and durable. But, despite their strength characteristics, under the influence environment plastic fades, becomes covered with cracks and scratches. To restore the decor that has lost its appearance or to give the material additional protection, plastic paint is used.

Areas of use

The range of use of dye for plastic is quite wide, but most often it is used:

  1. For painting dashboards of boats and cars. Painting panels is necessary not only for the purpose of decoration, but also to give them additional strength. This is especially true for panels and other plastic parts of boats that are located on the deck and exposed to the weather.
  2. For the purpose of decorating various household items and interior design. Dyes for plastic can decorate furniture, decorate beautifully Wall panels or paint plastic bottles. From such bottles, craftsmen create real works of art, skillfully combining the colors of the produced bottles and additional coloring.

Paints for plastic can be used everywhere, the main thing is to choose the type of dye in accordance with the type of plastic and the operating conditions of the product.

Varieties of coloring compositions

Depending on the purpose, the following types of compositions are distinguished:

  1. ABS. This polymer has both primer and enamel properties and can be used both as a decorative finishes, and to increase adhesion for painting.
  2. Abrasion resistant. It is made on the basis of polyurethane resins with additives that give the composition additional strength. It is used for the surfaces which are exposed to big loading, it is steady against attrition.
  3. Tactile (soft touch). After drying, such paint on plastic forms a velvety matte structure, very pleasant to the touch. Soft touch acrylic paint is widely used for decoration, creating a feeling of comfort and visually smoothing sharp corners. She paints car interiors, household appliances and paints plastic bottles.
  4. Structural. The application of structural coloring compounds allows you to mask the defects that have arisen on the surface, because when this coloring matter dries, a beautiful surface with “pimples” is obtained. Structural mixtures are used both for self-decoration and to increase adhesion before final painting.
  5. Powder. The use of powder dyes is not suitable for all types of plastics, but only for heat-resistant ones. For example, plastic bottles cannot be dyed with this method - they will melt at high temperatures. Powder coating is carried out in a chamber under the influence of high temperatures, due to which the powder particles melt, reliably adhering to the base. In this way, it is possible to increase the strength of parts that are constantly exposed to abrasion or the effects of atmospheric phenomena. As a rule, the dashboards of ships and boats are painted in this way to give them extra strength.

From the whole variety of dyes, it is necessary to choose the type that will best match the base to be painted, whether it be a wall panel or a plastic bottle.

What to look for when choosing

When deciding which type of dye to purchase, you must carefully read the main characteristics of the composition indicated on the package:

  1. Adhesion. Most dyes have good adhesion to the surface, differ only in the degree of adhesive qualities. When choosing, you need to consider what kind of composition and smoothness plastic item planned to be painted.
  2. Foundation compatible. Enamel for plastic should be suitable in composition to the type of surface to be painted or to the primer applied to it. Failure to follow this rule will cause the decorative layer to quickly crack or blister.
  3. Spreadability and hiding power. These parameters show how evenly, thickly the paint falls on the material.
  4. Water resistance. All acrylic paints and varnishes used for plastic surfaces are water-resistant, after drying the resulting film can be washed. But for products under conditions high humidity, in order to increase water resistance, additional additives are added, more often polyurethane.
  5. Aesthetics. Depending on what result you want to get, you can use paint on plastic, which gives a flat, smooth surface, or choose structural staining.
  6. Compliance with the basis. The instructions always indicate what type of plastic can be painted with this product.

Does it need to be primed

It is known that preparation for painting for all coloring agents consists of the following steps:

  • cleaning;
  • grinding;
  • degreasing;
  • primers.

Some types of plastic do not need priming - they can be painted immediately after degreasing, skipping one of the preparation steps. But how to determine whether to prime or not?

At home, this can be done in two ways:

  1. Set fire to a small piece of plastic. If during combustion the flame smokes heavily, then priming is not necessary. This is worth taking into account for those who prefer to primer plastic bottles to improve the quality of work. When burned, the bottles emit a lot of smoke, so it is quite possible to save time and money by skipping the priming work.
  2. Drop into water. Drowned plastic parts do not need to be primed.

Important! If it is not possible to carry out these simple tests, for example, if the wall panels have been installed for a long time and there are no leftover pieces for examination, then it is recommended not to neglect the priming work.

Necessary materials

Before you start painting, you need to stock up on the following tools and materials:

  1. A set of "skins" of different grain sizes. When preparing the material, they can give the base the necessary smoothness and roughness.
  2. water and detergent(it is better to take a neutral soap).
  3. White spirit or any other plastic degreaser.
  4. Masking tape (if it is necessary to paint not the entire product, but only part of it).
  5. Painting tools: spray gun, roller, brush or spray can.

Coloring process

Before applying the paint, preparation of the base is necessary. For this surface you need:

  1. Wash. Small parts are immersed in water, and for washing large areas, it is recommended to use a portable car wash.
  2. Treat with skin. Depending on the smoothness, the base is either ground or, conversely, scratched with sandpaper.
  3. Degrease. White spirit is most often used for this purpose, but you can take any other alcohol-based degreaser.
  4. Prime if necessary. If there is any doubt whether to prime or not to prime, then a primer should be applied. An extra primer layer will only increase the quality of the final result.
  5. Dry and you can start painting.
  1. What is the load on the product. The greater the likelihood of abrasion or damage to the surface, the more layers must be applied.
  2. It is possible to apply a new layer only after the complete drying of the already applied one.
  3. It is recommended to use the painted product a day after applying the last layer. During this time, complete polymerization of the material will occur, the decorative film will acquire all the strength characteristics.

By following these simple recommendations, you can make a high-quality and beautiful color of the product. Using paints for plastic products, you can not only give a second life to old things, but also further strengthen plastic parts.

More and more plastics are being used in the electronics and automotive industries.

The color of the plastic can be changed directly during its production by adding certain pigments, however, in this case, the plastic will not meet the high technical and decorative requirements of the customer.

The paint coating protects the plastic from damage, scratches, significantly improves the resistance to environmental influences, and also increases its chemical and mechanical resistance. Also, paint and varnish coatings will hide surface defects that could occur during its production.

With the help of paint and varnish products, it is possible not only to give color to plastic, but also to obtain various effects on the surface of plastics, for example: Soft-touch (deep matte tactile surface), giving the plastic a very high, almost mirror-like gloss, and so on.

Plastic is perfectly painted in any color during production. But often there is a need to repaint a plastic product during operation. That's just painting plastic does not always give a good result - often a new coating just flies off it. And it's all about the subtleties of coloring. To get a smooth, durable, beautiful surface, you need to choose the right paint and follow the technology of its application.

First of all, you need to deal with the question, is it possible to paint plastic at all? It is possible, but not everyone. Plastic (plastic) is a collective name, and different materials are hidden under it.

Important! The type of plastic cannot be determined "by eye". To find out what kind of plastic an object is made of, you need to find a marking on it (two or three capital letters in Latin).

Here are the most common types of plastics and their relationship to painting:

  • polystyrene (PS), polycarbonate (PC), polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) - do not stain;
  • ABS plastic (ABS) and PVC (PVC) - are painted, but require preliminary priming.

Types of plastic, marking, scope

A separate story with automotive plastics. As a rule, polymers are used here that lend themselves well to painting. But some of them require priming, while others do not. To determine whether a particular part needs to be primed, the following tests can be used:

  1. Dip the entire part or a small piece of it into a container of water. Plastic that sinks is painted without a primer. And the material floating on the surface must be primed.
  2. Take a small piece of plastic, peel it off old paint and dirt and set on fire. If the material burns with a clean and even flame, it must be primed. And if soot and black smoke are released during combustion, a primer is not needed.

What paint to choose?

Having determined the material of the product, you need to decide how to paint the plastic. There are several options here:

  1. The best solution is to buy a special enamel for processing plastics. Its label should say "for plastic" or "for plastic". For soft products, be sure to choose elastic enamel.
  2. Take ordinary oil paint.
  3. Use water-based emulsions, such as universal acrylics.

Attention! Do not apply acetone-based enamels and varnishes to plastic products. This solvent will corrode the surface to be painted.

There is also plastic paint (liquid plastic). It's not the same as paint on plastic. Liquid plastic consists of a polymer dissolved in a solvent. Drying, such a composition forms a thin and durable plastic layer on the surface. These paints are universal and are applied to a wide variety of surfaces. But before using such a material for painting plastic, you need to carefully read the label and make sure that it is suitable for this purpose.

Painting method

Enamels for plastic are sold both in cans and in spray cans. What paint to paint a particular product depends on its size and on the painting skills of the master:

Thus, aerosol enamel is much more convenient for home use than canned enamel. If you have to choose enamel in a jar and paint large surfaces (panels, furniture, containers), it is better to use a spray gun. Otherwise, it is applied with a brush or (much less often) with a roller.

Preparing plastic for painting

In order for plastic painting to be successful, it is necessary to properly prepare the surface. This is done in several steps:

  1. Removal of old coatings. They can be removed from plastic in several ways - rub the surface with sandpaper, treat with a solvent, or heat it with a building hair dryer. When choosing a solvent for removing paint from plastic, make sure that it does not dissolve the plastic base.
  2. Cleaning. Dirty items must be thoroughly washed and dried.
  3. Degreasing. The cleaned surface is wiped with a solvent.
  4. Treatment of plastic with antistatic. Plastics become electrified and attract dust and small debris, which greatly damage the painted surface. Antistatic eliminates this problem.
  5. If necessary, putty the surface.
  6. Surface grouting. Plastic must be matted - sanded with fine sandpaper (no larger than No. 180). This treatment will increase the adhesion of the paint to the plastic. It is more convenient to wipe large surfaces with water (in this case, you will need moisture-resistant sandpaper). After sanding, the plastic is dedusted and dried.
  7. Re-degreasing.
  8. Padding. The surface is treated with a special primer for plastic. The primed product is dried.
  9. Re-matting and dedusting.

This completes the preparation of plastic for painting.

Conditions for successful staining of plastic

To obtain an even and durable coating during staining of plastic, the following conditions are observed:

  • room temperature - more than + 18 ° С;
  • relative air humidity - up to 80%;
  • the temperature of the surface to be painted, paint and tools (equipment) for its application must be the same;
  • paint is applied to plastic with a layer 60–120 microns thick (a thinner coating will be short-lived, a thicker one will be sloppy);
  • the painted product is dried at a temperature of +18…+60°С;
  • during the period of staining and drying, the object must be protected from dust;
  • drying time under recommended conditions - from two to three hours to a day (depending on the specific temperature);
  • the final polymerization (hardening) of the paint occurs only after 5-7 days.

Until polymerization is completed, the painted product must not be subjected to strong mechanical stress, low temperatures and high humidity.

Technology for painting plastic with a brush

Painting plastic with a brush requires good skill. Thus, it is difficult to make an even coating, and over a large area, irregularities will be very striking.

On a note! The brush creates a relatively thick layer of paint, and it will take longer to dry.

The paint is applied to the plastic in wide, even stripes. Each stroke is first done with a gentle movement (the paint lays down in a relatively thick layer). The bristles are then pressed harder to blend the coating and make the layer thinner. The third stroke of the brush should again be light - it evens out the applied material. As a rule, with this application technology, one coat of paint is sufficient.

Basic coloring rules:

  • The brush should not be completely immersed in the coloring composition, it is better to dip only the tip.
  • The paint should be applied as thinly as possible, carefully rubbing it with a tightly pressed bristle.
  • In order for the coating to turn out even, the brush must be constantly held at the same angle to the surface to be painted.

How to paint plastic from a spray can

The technology of coloring plastics in this case is no different from the processing of other materials:

  • The surface to be painted must be glued around the perimeter with construction tape, and adjacent areas should be protected with paper or oilcloth.
  • Shake the can well (according to the instructions on the label - from 30 seconds to 3 minutes).
  • The paint is sprayed onto the prepared surface from a distance of 20–30 cm.
  • Apply the composition with smooth, even movements in one thin layer. Keep the can upright.
  • Aerosol paint lays down thinner, so you need to apply two to three layers.
  • Each coat must dry before the next is applied (usually spray paint takes 15-20 minutes to dry).
  • Immediately after applying the last layer, remove construction tape from the plastic.

Advice! If you need to paint large surfaces, you should purchase a special spray tip. It will help to adjust the amount of sprayed composition and distribute it more evenly.

When the enamel is completely dry, it can be topcoated with acrylic varnish (glossy or matte). This technique is suitable for any method of applying paint. The varnish will protect the coating from damage and extend its service life, as well as additionally level the surface. It is applied in the same way as paint, and then dried.

Thus, it is quite possible to paint plastic with high quality with your own hands. It is only necessary to carefully consider the choice of paint and diligently prepare the surface.

The fresh look of an old plastic car interior part is not only the result of painstaking work on applying restoration preparations. This is, first of all, their correct selection. Look at the pictures bad experience painting, when the owner simply applied paint to one of the interior elements, and it immediately crumpled. Yet a negative experience should not discourage self painting. After all, it is no more difficult to do this than . The site team offers to get acquainted with all the intricacies of the technology for painting plastic elements, and to sort out the main mistakes that beginners face.

How to paint plastic car interior

Immediately, we note that the concept of "paint" is complex. If without lyrics, then painting a plastic element of the interior means:
  • Sanding.
  • Degrease.
  • Find out if it needs to be primed or not.
  • Restore texture if needed.
  • Paint in desired color.

What to sand

For matting salon plastics under the ground, red scotch-brite is usually enough. It is a felt-based abrasive, similar to the rough side of a dishwashing sponge. The advantage over fine-grained sandpaper is softness, which allows this tool to process various bends and indentations with high quality.

How to degrease

Experienced painters are advised to use only anti-silicone. The fact is that classic solvents in the form of white spirit or solvent can ruin the plastic unit. For example, after using organics, spots are formed that are difficult to hide even by painting. By the way, we have already recommended that white spirit be abandoned when implementing a technology that describes without damaging the paint.

Need primer on plastic or not

The reason for the clumping and flaking of fresh paint is that no primer has been applied beforehand. This is a composition with a special formula of various additives and plasticizers, which improves the adhesion of the paint to the surface. However, not all plastics need primer treatment. To establish whether to prime salon plastic or not, it is necessary to conduct two experiments:

  1. Set fire to a piece of the workpiece.
  2. Submerge the item in water.

If the plastic smokes and sinks, it is not necessary to use a plastic primer. When the plastic element burns like a wax candle and floats on water, a primer is indispensable.

It is important to correctly approach the choice of soil. So ordinary automotive compounds are not suitable - the paint instantly peels off. You need a special primer designed specifically for plastic.

When Structural Paint Is Necessary

If you have ever touched a black plastic bumper or a dark side mirror housing of a car in an inexpensive configuration, you probably felt that the tangible surface seemed to be covered with small pimples. Matte rough effect is a structural plastic. The paint in question recreates the same result, and is usually used to mask scuffs and light scratches.

How can it be useful when preparing a salon part for painting? At a minimum, this component allows you to restore worn and slightly damaged areas of the restored element. As a maximum layer structural paint protects surfaces from damage. And this is fully relevant for the parts with which the crew is actively in contact (door handles, handles, etc.).

What's up with the paint

First, decide what kind of coverage you want to get. Here are some examples:

  • soft touch. Usually used for torpedoes. The surface is slightly silky and rubberized. This coating is applied to the panel from the factory.
  • Normal, rough. Applied to hard plastic. For example, the sides of the center console, the lower trims on the door cards or the handles for closing the doors.
  • Glossy. It is used for trimming saloon levers designed to open the door.

Then find out for yourself which shade to prefer. If you plan to paint the interior exclusively in a restoration vein, then take the trouble to find a corporate catalog with the distribution of colors of the insides and outsides by VIN numbers. The original paint, selected according to the factory catalog (for example, for VW it is ETKA), will preserve the monotony of the overall picture of the interior. This will be due to the fact that there will be no noticeable difference between painted and unpainted parts.

Note. For restoration measures, it is better to order the original paint and only from the car manufacturer.

If we talk in the plane of the examples given, then it is better to purchase a Soft-Touch aerosol can through the official line. To get the usual rough layer, it is enough to use classic paint paired with structural paint. Here are examples for common shades:

  • Black. Suitable VAZ black Cosmos (code 665).
  • Grey. The VAZ decorant (graphite) intended for bumpers fits perfectly.

However, the color and origin of the paint are purely individual things and are selected solely according to one's own preferences. Continuing the conversation about rough coatings, it is appropriate to mention the well-known RAPTOR U-POL, a protective coating for the exterior of a car, and its similarity - HB BODY.

Glossy objects are ordinary paint covered with several layers of varnish. The latter is recommended to be purchased in aerosol cans. There are no hard requirements for this component.

We recommend painting plastic parts of a car interior only with a spray can. When applying enamel with a brush, there is a risk of streaks. In addition, such a layer dries much longer, which means that the probability of catching dust particles is much higher.

How to paint interior plastic so that the paint does not peel off

Let's start by analyzing the main mistake: why does the enamel layer peel off? The reason is that the material has nothing to catch on, that is, poor adhesion of the paint layer to the primer or plastic.

The fact is that before applying any type of paintwork on the treated surface, it is necessary to create small grooves and scratches, that is, to grind. This improves the adhesion of the new coating to the base, making it durable and resistant to peeling. What else is sanding good for? During treatment with scotch brite, stubborn contaminants are removed, which are difficult to remove with anti-silicone.

Hard plastic painting technology

We have already outlined the main stages of restoration work in the selection of materials. Now let's deal with the technical part of each operation.

  • Sanding. According to painting terminology, this transition would be correctly called matting. The bottom line is that the red bright adhesive tape must be moistened with anti-silicone and rubbed with a plastic part.
  • Degrease. Moisten a rag in anti-silicone and walk over the treated surface.

  • Prime. Apply 3-4 coats of special primer for plastic and wait until it dries.
  • Sanding. Treat the primed surface with adhesive tape.
  • Paint. Apply 2-3 coats of paint of the desired color. If there is a need to restore the structure, then structural enamel is applied before the main painting. The places of its spraying are determined locally: this is either the entire surface of the part, or some of its sections. If the goal is to get varnished surface, then 20-30 minutes after receiving the painted coating, varnish is applied in 1-2 layers.

When painting interior plastic, follow the well-known rules for working with aerosol cans:

  • Place the part in a closed room with a hood so that dust does not enter the processing area.
  • Cover untreated surfaces with newspaper, cardboard or thick cloth, securing it around the perimeter with masking tape.
  • Shake the can for 1 minute to get an even coat.
  • Try spraying paint on some cardboard. Check the color match and prepare the can for uniform spraying.
  • Apply paint/primer to the surface with quick, but smooth and non-stop longitudinal movements. Drying time between coats at +25°C averages 20-30 minutes. Complete polymerization occurs after 24 hours. Shake the can periodically while painting.
  • Turn the bottle over and press the button. Actual in the event that paint remains in the container. This is done so that the material does not freeze in the sprayer.

Working with Soft-Touch coating

We have already noted that the above painting technique is relevant for hard interior plastic. Soft-coated plastics, such as dashboards or door cards, need special treatment:

  • The old soft-touch layer must be completely removed. If this is not done, then the new paint will peel off again. To easily remove the coating, the part should be soaked in the 646th solvent.
  • When using original Soft-Touch paints, plastic is usually not primed, and one coat of coating is enough to successfully close the issue of restoring interior elements.

For self-restoration of the car, you need to do the interior. It is this part that suffers the most from operation and needs high-quality painting. Here the driver spends a lot of time, his communication with the car is to use the details of the interior. Therefore, they should always be kept in perfect order. So that the paint for the plastic of the car does not peel off and does not shed ahead of time, you need to use the recommendations and purchase high-quality materials. Your car will again become more attractive and will be able to please you with wonderful emotions during operation.

The hardest thing to paint plastic parts. Here, the structural surface creates certain difficulties during restoration, it does not allow you to properly clean the layer of old paint and apply new materials. In order for the plastic in the cabin to be like new, it must be looked after, treated with polishes and protective agents. If appearance already spoiled, you have to take up repair work. In working with the interior of a car, the most important stages are - right choice products for painting, as well as competent processing of the part before applying materials.

The selection of suitable materials is one of the most difficult stages of the work. If you have never encountered car paint issues, plastic restoration will be a rather complicated process for you. Auto needs a professional approach at every stage, including when choosing products. You will not need a primer for salon elements, but specialized materials for painting will come in handy. You need to pay attention to such points:

  • special purpose for plastic - you can use products for car bumpers;
  • the possibility of painting structural surfaces, which is inherent in all auto paints for such tasks;
  • manufacturer - choose well-known companies such as Motip or KUDO, you can use Polish Farbid;
  • price - if the cost is too low, there is a possibility of acquiring a fake instead of the original;
  • package shape - the easiest way to work with aerosol options, since they do not need a compressor.

It is also worth getting rags, a solvent and thinking over devices for hanging or laying plastic parts when applying paint and varnish products. Take care of everything in advance so as not to run around in search of improvised materials around the car when work has already begun. It is best to paint the interior elements of your car with products with a quality guarantee. In the store, when buying, you can ask for documents for the goods.

Interior preparation and old paint treatment

Plastic in the interior of the car needs a very high-quality processing. The specificity of paint materials is such that improper application will be fraught with streaks, color transitions and unpainted parts. All this causes certain difficulties. Paint for interior plastic can lie down normally only when preliminary preparation details. To do this, a fairly simple procedure is followed with the following procedure:

  • Parts are dismantled from the car. This must be done carefully, as some plastic parts are very easy to damage. If we are talking about the panel and door cards, you can leave them in place, closing everything around.
  • If the enamel is applied to a greasy and dirty surface, all the paint material will simply drain. So for starters, the plastic is degreased, cleaned of all kinds of contaminants.
  • The next step is to wash off the old paint using water and fine sandpaper. Use P 1500-2000 on a water-resistant base and constantly apply water under the abrasive.
  • Further, the interior is protected from paint getting on all kinds of elements, otherwise you will have to rub them off later. To do this, use thin masking tape and film or newspapers, creating protective screens.
  • The last step is to degrease the surface again and apply paint with gentle movements. This will help quite simply to maintain the evenness and quality of the plastic surface and restore freshness to the interior.

In order for the car to become beautiful again, you must apply the purchased materials with high quality and without errors in the process of doing the work. Otherwise, the paint will drain, not dry, or will be very different in color. Remember also that when painting local parts of plastic, you will have to use the transition staining method. This is not possible with a can, professional equipment is required. Paint for interior plastic is sold not only in aerosol form, but this is how its use is most convenient.

How much do you need to buy paint for interior parts?

Structural surfaces are unpredictable when applying paint products. In one car, a 400 ml bottle is enough to paint the entire interior, and in another, the same amount of material will go to one big detail. It is difficult to predict consumption. Each car is different, but there are certain general criteria. When purchasing materials, consider the following features:

  • you should not buy less than 400 ml, although you can find more compact packaging on store shelves;
  • an aerosol can with a small volume will quickly lose its normal pressure and will not help to paint the interior with high quality;
  • if you plan to paint plastic throughout the cabin, you should immediately buy at least two cylinders with a margin;
  • before painting plastic, you will have to perform a practice painting of unnecessary auto parts for experience;
  • for a normal result and a successful car repair, it is better to have more aerosol than you need.

Given the democratic cost of cylinders, you can take products for cars with a small margin. You can always find something else to paint in the car in order to get the normal operation of the interior of the vehicle. But to paint one small car part, you don’t need to buy too many paint products. Otherwise, the cost of your car restoration venture will be too high.

Summing up

Every car owner wants to make their vehicle more attractive. There are many ways to accomplish this noble undertaking. But often the methods involving professionals turn out to be too expensive. Therefore, potential customers of spray booths and service stations prefer to buy the necessary paint on their own and do the work with their own hands. It is much cheaper, but it does not always work out to get the desired results. It is important to choose the right methods and tools.

When working with plastic, it is worth protecting the interior as much as possible from enamel ingress, preparing the part for applying car paint. Also, do not forget that there are quite a few brands on the market offering paint products in a variety of price segments. Much easier to buy good material and then do not overpay for the restoration of poorly painted parts. It will be cheaper and more profitable in all aspects, and the owner of the vehicle will be able to prove himself in caring for his car.
