The choice of material for the production of work

Laying plywood on a wooden floor is a great solution. This do-it-yourself rough coating has the following advantages:

  • low cost;
  • ease of transportation;
  • reduction of preparatory work time;
  • good leveling of small floor defects and increase the service life of the floor covering;
  • strength and wear resistance of the material;

Classification of plywood types

Before laying the material with your own hands, you need to choose it correctly. There are several classifications according to various criteria:

  • by grade and type of raw materials used (wood);
  • impregnation (its presence and method);
  • grade;
  • surface treatment method;
  • number of layers;
  • moisture resistance.

Laying plywood on a wooden floor in a house (rough coating) involves the following recommendations for choosing when doing do-it-yourself work:

  • the flooring is made of sheets of the second or third grade, the use of the first is not justified from an economic point of view;
  • in the house it is best to use moisture-resistant material, this is especially important when installation is carried out in wet areas (bathroom, bathroom, kitchen);
  • flooring involves the use of sheets with a minimum thickness of 10 mm, but this is only suitable for small rooms with low traffic;
  • laying technology in more critical premises suggests that the substrate under the finished floor will be made of a material with a thickness of 14-22 mm, such sheets have sufficient strength;
  • it is recommended to choose materials sanded on both sides (if possible).

Preparatory work

Before laying plywood on a wooden floor in a house, the flooring and surface must be prepared. Do-it-yourself activities are as follows:

  • the base for the installation of plywood must be cleaned of debris, dirt and treated with antiseptic compounds; when laying without a log, it will be necessary to perform priming;
  • checking the condition of the floor, removing and replacing damaged elements;
  • if there is time, it is recommended to arrange the sheets vertically and dry them for 2-3 weeks, while the temperature should be at room temperature or slightly higher;
  • after drying, the sheets are treated with antiseptic compounds;
  • further it is necessary to ventilate the material;
  • if there is a need to increase strength, it is worth treating the plywood with acrylic varnish, the coating is made in several layers;
  • when laying with your own hands, you need to bring the sheets into the room in two days and lay them out horizontally, this is done so that the material adapts to the temperature and humidity conditions of the room.

Methods of work

Installation in the house can be done in two ways:

  • laying on an old wooden floor (suitable for a small height difference);
  • installation on logs (with differences of 1 cm or more).

Leveling the old floor

In this case, plywood can be fastened in three ways:

  • glue;
  • liquid Nails;
  • self-tapping screws.

It is worth noting that the latter option provides the most reliable fastening of sheets than laying on glue. Adhesive compositions can be water-based, two-component, mounting glue or bustilat is also used.

Mounting on glue is carried out in the following order. After completing the preparatory work, the floors are checked by level. If the vertical difference is less than 1 cm, then the method described below can be used. To compensate for irregularities with their own hands, a plywood substrate is used, the joints of which are glued with adhesive tape.

Plywood layout options

Next, you need a layout of sheets, which will allow you to most rationally cut the source material. The plywood is preliminarily laid out taking into account the seams for the expansion of the material under load and with temperature fluctuations (damper seams are 3-4 mm). Leave 8-10 mm between the wall and the subfloor.

Having laid out the sheets, the elements are sawn electric jigsaw to the required sizes. If installation is required for a large room, squares with a side of 50-60 cm are used. All parts of the coating must be numbered in the order in which they must be laid later.

When fastening to self-tapping screws, holes are drilled in the sheets, which are then countersinked using a larger drill. When laying on glue, it would also be wise to make an additional mount. The holes are located at a distance of 2 cm from the edge of the part. The step between the fasteners is taken equal to 15-20 cm.

The production of works begins with such elements as niches, ledges, raised podiums.

It is necessary, when attaching to glue and in other ways, to place the elements of the subfloor with dressing. It looks like brickwork, that is, each subsequent row is mounted with an offset relative to the previous one. The easiest way is to shift half the sheet. The minimum offset is 10 cm.

The glue is applied in an even layer 2-3 mm thick on the base. After laying the sheets, they are pressed down with a roller. In order to ensure greater reliability and prevent displacement when mounting on glue, self-tapping screws are used.


The procedure for laying plywood sheets

After fixing, the sheets are ground with a special machine with a coarse emery nozzle.. The evenness of the rough coating is checked by the rule (with a rail at least 2 meters long). It is applied to the surface and the fit is checked. The gaps between the tool and the surface when laying on the adhesive should be no more than 2 mm.

Laying on lags


Laying plywood on joists

This method is more laborious, but allows you to eliminate significant defects in the base. When cleaning and checking the old flooring, special attention is paid to the seams between the floorboards. If necessary, they are spilled with adhesive to prevent problems (creaking).

Cutting sheets for the floor along the lags is performed in the same way as in the previous case. First of all, you need to fix the lags - wooden planks section 40 by 15 mm. Elements are laid on the old coating in one direction. The step is selected based on the size of the plywood sheets. It is necessary to make sure that the seam between the elements falls on a wooden lath.


Installation instructions for plywood sheets on logs

When installing the floor on the logs, the boards are fixed on wooden floor self-tapping screws. Fastening sheets to the guides is done in the same way. Soundproofing material is laid along the lags (between them). Most often, a heater is used for this. If it is necessary to lay communications, then they are placed in a layer of thermal insulation.

It is most reliable to attach the sheets to the guides for self-tapping screws, but liquid nails can also be used. Holes for fasteners are pre-drilled in the same way as when laying without a lag (observing the same requirements). Next, the surface is processed in the manner described above (grinding).

With proper installation, you can not worry about the durability of the finish coating and the creaking of the floors. It does not really matter which method is chosen: by lags or without them. It is important to do the work in accordance with the technology.

Benefits of plywood flooring

Using plywood for flooring has a number of advantages:

Materials such as fiberboard cannot be considered as replacements due to poor bending performance and lower overall durability. If plywood sheets can bend without problems, relying on a ribbed floor, then fiberboard simply cannot withstand such a load.

Fiberboard should not be used even to eliminate small defects on the floor surface.

Another advantage of plywood sheets can be considered their low cost. Especially when you compare their cost with the price of floorboards in a room of the same size. So the relatively low price of plywood for the floor can also be considered a significant factor when choosing a material for the floor.

Which plywood to choose

When choosing, you will have to take into account factors such as:

  • plywood dimensions, attention should be paid to the thickness, the deflection under load depends on this, this is especially important when laying on logs;

If the work will be carried out in a city apartment, then it will be inconvenient to transport sheets a couple of meters high, to put it mildly.

  • plywood type. For residential premises, the FK type (based on urea adhesives) is suitable. On sale, you can also find options using adhesives on phenolic compounds, but they are more dangerous to human health, although they are highly resistant to moisture. Bakelite and even more so laminated plywood sheets for the floor are definitely not suitable;
  • as for surface treatment, if linoleum, laminate or any other type of flooring will be laid on top of it, then you can take the simplest - unpolished type;
  • depending on the presence of defects in the outer layers of the veneer, plywood can be divided into grades. For flooring, grades 3 and 4 can be recommended, since the floor covering will still be located on top of it, the number of defects does not matter at all.

Features of the installation of a wooden coating

You can put plywood on the floor in cases where the floor boards dry out and become unusable, replacing failed elements is impossible or unprofitable.

To achieve a positive result, it is important to strictly comply with the requirements and rules of the technological process:

  • Plywood is laid on a wooden floor only if there is no deflection along the logs and complete dismantling of the floor is not required.
  • In the room where the work is planned to be carried out, there should be no high humidity.
  • Laying is carried out dry. According to the plan, 3 seams should converge at one point.
  • There must be gaps of at least 1 cm between individual sheets and between plywood and walls.
  • Laying is carried out in strict accordance with the plan and markings, and for this all sheets are numbered before installation.
  • When fixing sheets with self-tapping screws, all fasteners are placed at a certain distance from each other. The step size is 20 cm, the indent from the edge of the sheet is 2 cm. The self-tapping screws should be drowned by 1-2 mm.
  • Self-tapping screws are chosen so that their length exceeds the thickness of plywood by 3 times.

Before proceeding with installation, it is necessary to carry out a moisture test. To do this, you will have to lay a plastic film on the floor and only after 3 days, making sure that there is no condensate on its reverse side, make a positive decision to carry out the work.

Important! Before you start laying plywood on an old wooden floor, the base must be processed grinder and impregnate with a primer, which includes antiseptic additives.

Such processing will provide full protection of the structure from decay, the appearance of fungus and mold.

Material preparation and cutting

Before laying plywood on wooden floors, it is necessary to carry out preparatory work, including determining the maximum difference, identifying dips or bends, which can be leveled with a special substrate or board tightening. If there are differences exceeding 1 cm, it will be necessary to lay additional logs made of bars of small thickness.

When choosing plywood, it is important to consider what the final flooring will be like:

  • linoleum;
  • carpet;
  • laminate;

The thickness of the sheets to be laid depends on the thickness of the floor material. In order to lay plywood on an old wooden floor, you will need a special set of tools:

  • jigsaw and screwdriver;
  • sealant and spirit level;
  • tape measure and construction pencil.

The floor surface also requires preliminary preparation, which consists in grinding, priming, and possibly additional fixation of the boards.

You need to cut the purchased sheets of plywood before starting work. This operation is performed in accordance with the layout plan and the size of the room. The layout starts from the far wall.

How to lay plywood on a wooden floor? It is important to follow the installation plan exactly and strictly follow the installation sequence.

If there is a difference exceeding 1 cm, the frame is installed around the entire perimeter of the room and the logs made of plywood are fastened. Their width is 30 cm, and the distance between them should not exceed the indicated figure. The laying of the coating sheets is carried out in such a way that the joints between them fall exactly in the middle of each log, between which a thin insulation can be placed.

The absence of drops or their size, which does not reach 1 cm, allows plywood to be laid on the substrate. In this case, it is important to remember the need for gaps between walls and sheets, as well as strictly follow the installation sequence, paying attention to the numbering of sheets.

The substrate is spread close to the walls. Fixing the floor material is not required, but if desired, it can be fixed in several places with staples of a construction stapler.

Plywood is laid directly on top of the substrate, doing this with an offset and in accordance with the plan.

Self-tapping screws are screwed along the edges and diagonals. Mounting step - 20 cm.

During installation, make sure that all screw heads are screwed in. This will make it easier and safer to carry out further work. After the installation is completed, the surface is ground and treated with antiseptic compounds.

In the manufacture of floors in residential and office premises, a plywood base is often used. Laying plywood on logs for the manufacture of a subfloor is a fairly reliable installation method. With this method of laying, the advantages of plywood are more pronounced.

Laying plywood on the logs allows the subsequent production of the top layer of the floor of almost any kind. This technology is applicable both in the construction of a new house and in the repair of a room. The method is very simple and can be done by hand.

Basic materials

The main materials are wooden logs and plywood. Usually, well-dried wooden beam. Recommended beam dimensions in section:

  • width -70 mm;
  • height - 40 or 50 mm.

It is advisable to use a bar with a length of at least 2 m. The bar should not have deformations along its entire length. The beam must be kept at room temperature for at least 10 days before use, after which it is necessary to check the absence of deformation due to drying.

Plywood is used in the form of sheets. Standard sizes:

  • 1525x1525 mm;
  • 1220x2440 mm.

The thickness of the sheet must be at least 12 mm. With a two-layer coating, a plywood sheet with a thickness of 9 mm can be used. Sheets should be smooth, without damage. Residual deformation of sheets in any plane is not allowed.

Usually, cheap plywood of the NSh brand (unsanded) is used for the subfloor, and Sh1 brand (sanded on one side) for parquet floors. The use of these plywood grades is limited by moisture content not exceeding 60%. Where the humidity is high or there is a high probability of floor flooding, it is recommended to use moisture-resistant plywood of the FC brand.

Step by step instructions: floor preparation

Work begins with cleaning the floor from dirt, dust, household and construction debris, and remnants of previous coatings. To exclude moistening of wooden elements from below, a layer of roofing material (roofing felt) or polyethylene film is laid on the floor surface. The film is applied to the entire surface with an overlap of 15-20 cm. The joints of the film are fastened with construction tape. If the film thickness is small, it is possible to produce flooring in 2-3 layers. Such flooring serves as a waterproofing.

Before installing the lag level, the horizontalness of the floor is checked. The marking of the installation sites of the beam is carried out and parallel lines are drawn in the middle of future lags. Usually the beam is installed on linings. For them, plates from pieces of board or plywood are used. The recommended size of each such lining is: width - 100 mm, length - 200-250 mm, thickness - at least 25 mm. Wooden linings with the help of anchors are attached to the floor over the waterproofing along the marked lag installation line. The level is controlled so that the height of the floor along the lining is the same over the entire surface. If it is necessary to adjust the height, pieces of roofing material or linoleum are added.

To prevent the formation of mold in the future, all wooden parts and logs are treated with an antiseptic. For the convenience of installing the floor, beacons are sometimes used. As beacons, you can use screws (self-tapping screws), which correspond to the height of the lag in terms of the height of the cap. Such beacons, screwed evenly over the floor surface, during the installation of the beam will help to control their height and their pressing force or the need for additional gaskets.

Mounting the lag on the surface

The timber is laid according to the markings on the fixed linings. Logs are mounted parallel to the wall with windows, i.e. across the direction of entry into the room sunlight. The first log is installed at a distance of 30-40 mm from the wall, and all subsequent ones - 40-50 cm apart.

When specifying the distance between the lags, it must be remembered that the gap between the last beam and the back wall should also be no more than 40 mm. The distance between the lags should be the same. Logs should be fixed parallel to each other strictly at the same height (along the surface). All logs are selected of the same section size, except for the log located at front door. It is advisable to install this timber from a wider bar (at least 50 mm).

With screws, the logs are attached to wooden linings, previously set up and fixed with anchors according to the markings. The heads of the screws should not protrude (preferably their recess in the log by 2-3 mm). The height of the lag must be strictly the same, therefore, during installation, the height is constantly monitored by beacons (if installed) or using a level. To increase the height, a roofing material of the required thickness is placed under the log.

The beacon allows you to determine the force with which the screw is screwed in, so the height of the log is adjusted.
To strengthen the log, the installation of transverse bars (crossbars) is usually carried out. Such bars are fastened across the bar at the places of installation of wooden linings and fastened to them with screws.

For reliability, after installing the lag, everything wooden elements coated with parquet or other similar adhesive. It is advisable to fill the volume between the lags with a heater and a sound insulator. For this, mineral wool, expanded clay or expanded polystyrene (polystyrene) is usually used. Before backfilling, all communications are carried out (if necessary). It is also recommended to apply a layer of parchment or bituminous paper over the lag.
Sometimes the installation of the timber is made without the use of wooden linings. In this case, the alignment of the lag is carried out by placing pieces of roofing material. The lag is fixed to the floor with anchors. The length of the anchor is chosen 5-6 cm more than the thickness of the bar.

For the convenience of laying plywood along the logs, it is advisable to cut a large sheet into squares or rectangles with a size convenient for high-quality work. The main requirement is that the size must be chosen taking into account that the edge of the sheet during fastening should be located in the middle of the beam. It is recommended that after cutting the plywood, it is fully laid out on the floor. Sheets should be fixed apart, i.e. at one point, joining more than two corners of the sheets is undesirable.

On sheets of plywood, the points of their attachment to the logs are determined and marking is carried out. In the marked places, it is advisable to drill a hole for the screw and drill (countersink) the hole with a diameter equal to the diameter of the screw head. When attaching plywood, this will allow you to drown the hat. The distance between the holes for the screw is selected within 20-30 cm, but taking into account that the number of fasteners on one sheet must be at least 8.

The prepared plywood sheet is placed in a place determined for it and screwed to the logs and crossbars (if provided) with screws. The screws are chosen to be three times the thickness of the plywood. Sheet joints should be placed in the middle of the lag. The gap between the sheets is left within 2-3 mm. After laying the entire layer, the gap is sealed with mastic using a spatula.

Plywood is usually laid in two layers.

When applying the second layer, the overlapping of the butt joints in the layers should be avoided.

The total thickness of plywood in both layers is selected within 24-25 mm. In each layer, the thickness of the plywood sheets should be the same, but it may differ in different layers. Thinner sheets can be laid in the second layer.

Tools and materials

When laying plywood, the following tools are needed:

  • electric drill;
  • Bulgarian;
  • screwdriver;
  • jigsaw;
  • hacksaw or saw for wood;
  • a hammer;
  • roulette;
  • meter ruler.

Expendable materials:

  • nails - 50, 70 mm;
  • screws (self-tapping screws) - 35, 50, 75 mm;
  • anchor bolts with a diameter of 10 mm;
  • roofing material or polyethylene film;
  • construction tape;
  • mastic is elastic;
  • parquet glue;
  • antiseptic;
  • parchment or bituminous paper.

Plywood is a durable, multi-layer material made from natural wood. Physical and mechanical properties and specifications plywood is conditioned by the process of its production. Namely, an odd number of sheets of thin wood veneer are glued together with glue.

Types of plywood depend on the glue used in the production:

  • FC- waterproof plywood. In its manufacture, kabamide glue is used;
  • FSF- plywood of the increased moisture resistance. Here, veneer sheets are glued together using phenol-formaldehyde glue;
  • FBA- plywood is waterproof. AT this case albumin-casein glue was used for gluing the veneer. FBA plywood has a slight moisture resistance, but is very much appreciated by those who bring the environmental friendliness of the material to the fore;
  • FB- plywood, which, thanks to the use of bakelite varnish, can be used in especially humid conditions and in water.

And these are just the main types of plywood. There are many more levels of classification, depending on the thickness of the sheet, the number of layers, the type of wood, the grade, the degree of finish and the type of additional processing.

1. Using plywood for flooring "+" and "-"

Advantages of plywood:

  • plywood, unlike OSB and fiberboard, refers to natural materials rather than recycled production waste. Therefore, it is more environmentally friendly;
  • plywood moisture indicators are in the range of 12-15%;
  • plywood takes the brunt of variable loads. Thus, the screed retains its integrity, and the wood gets microcracks. However, they do not affect the quality of the floor;
  • due to the fact that plywood is made from wood, it is in better contact with floor coverings. As a result, the service life of the latter increases;
  • plywood makes it possible to obtain a floor that will meet the specified characteristics (flatness, surface quality) with less time and resource;
  • laying plywood on the floor does not require special preparation and can be done in several stages;
  • plywood plays the role of a kind of insulation, allowing you to reduce heat loss through a concrete screed and floor slabs;
  • with a significant difference in height across the floor, the use of a screed is not recommended due to heavy weight and cost. But plywood, on the contrary, would be ideal;
  • depending on the grade and quality of polishing, plywood can be used for sub-flooring and finishing.

But:

  • plywood is not suitable for rooms with a significant temperature difference (for example, for cottages or houses of non-permanent residence), as well as for high humidity levels (in a bathroom, bath, sauna, swimming pool).

2. What kind of plywood to lay on the floor

To begin with, it is worth clarifying two important factors.

  • First moment - What type of floor is plywood for?. After all, the floor, in fact, is a two-layer structure, which consists of a draft (lining) and a finishing (front) coating layers.
  • Second moment - in which room to lay plywood. So, for example, in a residential area, and even more so in a bedroom or a children's room, it is permissible to use only FK brand plywood. It does not contain formaldehyde. Therefore, its use is absolutely safe, with satisfactory indicators of moisture resistance. AT industrial premises with good ventilation, it is permissible to use FSF plywood. But only 1 emission class. The class means that the formaldehyde content does not exceed 100 mg. per 1 kg. plywood sheet.

Depending on the above points, the question of which plywood is better for the floor (which one to use for the floor) will be decided.

3. What kind of plywood to choose for the floor

When choosing plywood for the floor, you should pay attention to the following parameters:

  • brand of plywood. As already noted, for residential premises it is better to purchase plywood of the FC brand. Its moisture resistance indicators fully meet the operating conditions in residential premises;
  • plywood class(emission class). Only class E-1 is suitable for the floor;
  • type of plywood for the floor. Plywood is divided into 4 grades. In this case, the sides of the sheet may have different grade. It is marked like this 1/1, 1/2, 2/2, etc. Plywood of 3 and 4 grades is suitable for the subfloor. For finishing - 1 or 2 grade;
  • plywood moisture. A sheet with a moisture index of 12-15% is of high quality;
  • number of layers of plywood. The thickness of the veneer in a plywood sheet is from 1.7 to 1.9 mm. Therefore, their number determines the thickness of the sheet. The more layers a sheet has, the more durable it is. However, the thickness of plywood is selected taking into account its purpose. So for the subfloor you need plywood 12-18 mm thick, for finishing 10-12 mm. When using plywood in production - at least 25 mm. Please note that if the plywood is to be laid in two layers, then the thickness of the sheet must be divided by two;

  • plywood manufacturer. European or domestic manufacturers offer material good quality. But Chinese-made plywood causes criticism from users and often does not meet the stated characteristics.

4. Laying plywood on the floor

4.1 Subfloor plywood

Laying a plywood subfloor is the fastest, most affordable and easiest way, which also has several varieties.

Sheet thickness 10-12 mm. glued to the base. It is used in the presence of a smooth concrete screed of normal quality. The main thing is not to forget about expansion joints when laying. The gap is 3-4 mm. between the sheets, as well as between the sheet and the wall, will allow the plywood to play and adapt to the surrounding conditions.

This method of installation can be applied with a height difference. It is enough to use special fasteners.

Adjustable floors from plywood do not require the installation of a log, and the height difference is leveled by fasteners located under the plywood.
