Liquid wallpaper ceiling: types, advantages, application technology. Liquid wallpaper on the ceiling: an excellent finishing option Preparing the ceiling for liquid wallpaper

You wanted to make your ceiling unique, went through many options, but do not know what to choose? We recommend liquid wallpaper for the ceiling, which can also be used for wall decoration. From the point of view of construction terminology, this type of finish coating refers to decorative plaster. By giving it your preference, you will get an elegant and unique ceiling design, from which it will be difficult to take your eyes off.

Liquid wallpaper is a packaged dry mix, which includes textiles or cellulose, and some special additives are also added. This decorative plaster is a versatile material that can be easily applied not only on flat ceiling surfaces, but also on its curly parts. At the same time, you get a beautiful uniform texture and a seamless coating that can hide small defects in the ceiling.

As a rule, this finishing material is packed in sealed polyethylene packages, which some manufacturers vacuumize for ease of transportation.

Liquid wallpaper on the ceiling differ for:

  • texture (smooth or embossed);
  • color (white or color);
  • bases (cellulose, silk, cotton or combined).

The roughness of the texture is strongly influenced by the size of the fibers that make up the base of the mixture. The larger they are, the more pronounced the texture of the coating.

Advice! Using a special embossed roller, you can make beautiful patterns on the wet surface of the finishing coating, which will also add exclusivity to your ceiling.

The color range of liquid wallpaper is very extensive, so you can easily pick up any tone for the interior. If there are difficulties with the desired shade, it is enough to take a white mixture and mix it with the desired water-soluble color of the color scheme.

Thanks to the interspersing of special additives in the composition of the mixture, the surface of the ceiling acquires its own unique look. The inclusion of additional components occurs at the stage of mixing the mixture.

Decorative additives for liquid wallpaper:

  • stone chips;
  • metallic sequins;
  • glaze.

The main element of the composition is its base. The durability and performance characteristics of the finish depend on it. Also, the main material of the mixture greatly affects the pricing of products.

Types of liquid wallpaper

Depending on the decorative and technical properties, there are 4 types of wallpaper, each of which has its own cost, advantages, disadvantages and optimal place in the design.

Cotton compounds

The main element of the substance is 98% cotton. This environmentally friendly material has good thermal and sound insulation characteristics. It is resistant to sunlight, does not lend itself to fading. Cotton liquid wallpaper on the ceiling can be used with confidence to decorate a child's room or bedroom.

Cellulosic formulations

This type is the cheapest among liquid wallpapers, as inexpensive material is used - shredded pieces of paper. The composition also includes plasticizers, adhesive components and various colors. Cellulose-based wallpapers do not react well to solar ultraviolet radiation, which leads to fading of the finish surface. This material is best used in places closed from the rays of the sun, for example, in the corridor.

Silk compositions

Silk decorative plaster contains natural silk fibers, which gives the ceiling finish durability and resistance to fading. This type of finish can be easily used in rooms with large windows on the sunny side. Due to their merits, silk liquid wallpaper is the most expensive among the options presented.

Mixed lineups

The combination of individual types will help to get a textured finish with good properties for relatively little money. The final price of the goods will be formed depending on what material will be more - cellulose, cotton, silk or additives.

Advantages and disadvantages

In order to give your preference towards liquid wallpaper, you must first familiarize yourself with all the pros and cons of this finish.

The main advantages of liquid wallpaper:

  • materials and glue used are eco-friendly, do not cause allergies;
  • good air and moisture exchange is maintained;
  • hiding flaws and irregularities on the surface of the ceiling;
  • provides a uniform coating without seams;
  • time-consuming surface preparation is not required;
  • decorative patterns are available in different shades and textures (from embossed to smooth);
  • used on curved and uneven surfaces;
  • damage to the finish coating is easily restored.

Main disadvantages:

  • poor moisture resistance (when wet, they can lag behind the surface);
  • the cost is an order of magnitude more expensive than that of roll wallpaper;
  • budget cellulose options burn out over time and lose their original appearance;
  • when finishing, basic skills of a plasterer are required.

To compensate for all the disadvantages of this decorative finishes, you need to initially choose the right material, which, according to its properties, is suitable for repairing a particular room. The presence of at least 40-50% cotton or silk is desirable in the mixture, which will increase durability and performance. To improve moisture resistance, it is recommended to use a transparent and water-repellent varnish.

Advice! Before you start applying the substance to the ceiling, you should carefully read the manufacturer's instructions on the package.

Features of applying liquid wallpaper to the ceiling

The process of finishing the ceiling with decorative plaster is divided into several stages:

  1. Preparatory.
  2. Application of the mixture.

It is worth noting the importance of preparatory work, on which the quality of adhesion of the prepared substance depends.

What tool to prepare

Today there is a large number of special tools for applying liquid wallpaper.

Tool range:

  • putty knife;
  • grater;
  • trowel;
  • roller;
  • container for preparing the mixture (basin, bucket).

The spatula for finishing the mixture is no different from the plaster. It may be from:

  • of stainless steel;
  • hard plastic.

In our situation, the material does not play a big role, the main thing is that it be elastic. When buying a spatula, pay attention to the following points:

  • ergonomics;
  • absence of defects on the surface of the material;
  • the shape and size of the working surface;
  • rigidity, rigid edges;
  • elasticity, fast recovery after pressing.

The width of the working spatula should be 25-30 cm. It is more convenient to use a narrow tool 8-10 cm in order to apply the mixture to the main one. But the substance is also easy to apply with your hands.

The trowel is used to evenly rub the wallpaper layer over the ceiling surface. The tool is very convenient to control the thickness of the application of the finishing material. The main requirement is that the working surface must be smooth. Trowels are made from the following materials:

  • stainless steel;
  • plexiglass.

Masters give their preference to the second option, since it is easier for them to control the uniformity and thickness of the layer.

Depending on the surface on which you have to work, the trowel has several forms:

  • rectangular for smooth and even places;
  • trapezoidal for individual zones with increased accuracy (arches, sockets, switches);
  • oval for hard-to-reach surfaces (rounded areas, niches).

Some professionals prefer a trowel over a spatula, as its cost is cheaper, and it is easier and more convenient to work with it.

A feature of the technology for applying liquid wallpaper is that the coating needs to be leveled after a couple of hours. The material of the mixture dries slowly and the dried areas must be rubbed and trimmed, removing possible flaws and defects.

It is very convenient to do this with a grater. It is similar in shape to a trowel, the material of the working area is plastic, it has a one-piece handle. The transparency of the grater makes it possible to see flaws in time and quickly eliminate them.

Using a roller, you can level the coating or apply the mixture to the surface of the ceiling. Each of these options uses different types tool. In the first case, this is a standard roller with a short pile, and for the second, a variant with sparse bristles is suitable. There are also texture rollers that make beautiful patterns on the finishing surface.

Ceiling preparation

Regardless of your old ceiling finish, the first step is to prepare the room for the renovation. If possible, take out all the interior items, and if not, take them to the center of the room and cover to gain access to the corners of the room. Remove chandeliers, switches and sockets, after insulating the wires. It is advisable to turn off the electricity in the room to avoid accidents. Having done the basic preparation of the room, proceed directly to the ceiling.

Plasterboard ceilings

Such ceilings are initially even, as this is required by their installation technology. The seams between the sheets should be sealed with putty and, after they dry, rubbed with fine sandpaper. For good adhesion, you need to use a primer, which is applied to the finishing surface with a roller or a wide brush. At the same time, the primer tool should not be wetted too much, as this can lead to softening and peeling of the drywall. The primer is applied in 2-3 stages with breaks of 3-4 hours for complete drying of the composition. Each subsequent layer is covered perpendicular to the direction of the previous one.

Ceilings with old wallpaper

First of all, the old wallpaper is removed. Moisten the surface of the ceiling with water using a roller or brush, leave for 30 minutes, then repeat the procedure if necessary. Next, with a spatula, easily peel off the old coating. After the work done, be sure to prime the surface of the ceiling. To do this, apply at least 2 coats of primer with a break of 3-4 hours, not forgetting to change the direction of application to improve the bonding of the surface.

Ceilings with decorative paint or whitewash

Whitewashing from the ceiling is removed in the same way as old wallpaper. Moisten the surface with water and remove excess finishing material with a spatula, then rinse again with water using a roller or brush. With acrylic-based paint, things are different - dry paint is scraped off with a spatula. After the ceiling is washed with water to remove dust. Carry out the primer in the manner described above.

Rough finish on concrete slab

As in the previous preparations, be sure to apply 2-3 primer coats at 3-4 hour intervals, using a roller or brush for convenience. Do not forget to alternate the directions of applying the primer in each layer.

Plaster all flaws and cracks on the ceiling, then apply a moisture-resistant putty composition with a fine-grained structure. Next, proceed to the primer.

Calculation of the amount of material

In order to find out how much finishing material is needed to repair the ceiling, it is necessary to measure the area of \u200b\u200bthe surface to be covered. Consumption decorative plaster also depends on the composition and size of the fibers. The thickness of the coating, the experience of the master is also taken into account. It is recommended to apply a finish layer of 1-3 mm liquid wallpaper, but this figure may increase if the surface has significant irregularities, which entails an overrun of the material.

Average consumption of the mixture: 1 kg per 3-4 m 2 of surface. For example, the ceiling area is 25 m 2, then divide 25 by 3, getting 8.3 packs. Always increase this amount up to a whole number. In our case, 9 packages of the mixture will be required.

Based on the above nuances, you need to consider the margin:

  • 7-13% for a ceiling with an uneven surface;
  • up to 15% for coating by an inexperienced person;
  • 0.5 kg for subsequent repairs.

If you decide to buy the missing amount of substance, you should be prepared for the fact that the shade of the finishing material may differ slightly. This will entail certain inconveniences, so it is better to purchase a decorative mixture with a margin.

Application of liquid wallpaper on the ceiling

After everything has been done preparatory work and decided on the amount of the mixture, proceed directly to applying the finishing material to the surface of the ceiling. This process can be divided into several distinct steps.

Mixture preparation

Pour the dry substance into a container with water at room temperature (20-25 0 C). Proportions are strictly observed according to the instructions on the manufacturer's packaging. To obtain a colorful coating, a water-soluble color of the corresponding shade is added to the water. color scheme You can choose based on the plate on the jar of color.

Add decorative additives to the dry mixture, then fill with water, constantly mixing with your hands. For a small area, kneading by hand does not cause inconvenience, but when working with large areas, it is more convenient to do this with a construction mixer. Use it at medium speeds to avoid getting air bubbles into the composition, which is possible at high speed.

After kneading, the substance swells for 20-60 minutes, after which it becomes ready for application to the ceiling surface.

First application and texture definition

The decorative coating of the wallpaper will depend on how you direct the movements of the finishing tool. With circular, transverse and longitudinal movements, the texture of the fibers lays down in different ways. In advance, on a small straight section, choose the best way by experimenting with the direction of work with a trowel.

Fixing the ceiling plinth

The technology for gluing a ceiling plinth in combination with liquid wallpaper differs from their standard installation. Since the surface of decorative plaster has a characteristic porosity, it is forbidden to glue the plinth on the wallpaper due to poor contact between the elements. The ceiling plinth is mounted only before applying liquid wallpaper.

Application of finishing material

The finished mixture is applied in a thin layer of 1-3 mm using a trowel or a wide spatula. After that, the coating is leveled with a grater or a special roller, certain texture patterns are attached. It is recommended to apply the composition in one step, before the coating dries. For the absence of joints, the finishing material is applied in small areas, each next one begins to be covered from the border of the previous one, leveling it.

Final processing and drying

After the ceiling is completely finished, liquid wallpaper on the ceiling dries from 12 to 72 hours. The room must not be ventilated, otherwise the coating will dry unevenly. For renewal performance characteristics dried wallpaper is covered with a transparent water-repellent varnish.

Examples of interiors with liquid wallpaper

IN modern apartments apply different kinds wall, floor and ceiling finishes. There are a lot of materials for this kind of work. Traditional whitewash and paper wallpaper gave way to higher quality types of cladding.

Liquid wallpaper is modern material which can be applied to walls and ceilings.

The ceiling decoration with liquid wallpaper is gaining more and more popularity.

This coating bears little resemblance to the usual paper, non-woven, fiberglass and other wallpapers. It is more like a decorative stone. On closer inspection, the finish looks like a layer of dense felt.

The material is sold as a dry mix packaged in plastic bags (photo No. 1). The mixture is diluted with water and applied to the surface of walls and ceilings, like ordinary plaster. No rolls, no glue, only the name remains of the wallpaper. The composition of such material without fail includes natural cellulose. Other natural fibers can be added to it: cotton, silk of different colors. The binder is acrylic dispersion, CMC glue. For effect, crumbs of marble, quartz or mica spangles are introduced into the composition.

Figure 1. Liquid wallpaper is sold in bags in the form of a dry mix.

Liquid wallpaper finishes only internal residential and office premises. This environmentally friendly finishing material is ideal for decorating ceilings and walls in children's rooms and bedrooms. It gives the room a special coziness and warmth. Liquid wallpaper is a coating with a fibrous structure. It has excellent soundproofing properties, can improve the acoustic characteristics of the room.

There are several manufacturers of this original finishing material: the domestic company Silk Plaster, which produces 15-20 items, the Turkish company Bayramyx, the French companies Senideco and Fibres de cotex. All products of these companies are different high quality, a wide variety of colors and textures.

Pros and cons of liquid wallpaper

Liquid wallpaper compares favorably with decorative plaster and conventional roll wallpaper:

The palette of liquid wallpaper is not large, but manufacturers are expanding the range of colors more and more.

  1. They do not require a lot of space to prepare and use.
  2. They do not need to be cut to size and smeared with adhesive.
  3. When using them, there are practically no residues.
  4. Walls and ceilings do not require careful alignment.
  5. Liquid wallpaper does not create dust, has no smell.
  6. When dried, the wallpaper does not emit substances harmful to people and pets.
  7. They are applied to any vertical or horizontal surface without a single joint.
  8. The material fills all the bumps and gaps between the ceiling and the wall.
  9. The finished mixture is very plastic, does not crack after laying.
  10. Liquid wallpaper coating breathes, creates additional sound insulation and thermal protection.
  11. Unlike vinyl wallpaper, liquid wallpaper does not create a greenhouse effect.
  12. The finished coating of walls and ceilings does not attract dust and odors.
  13. When burning, the coating does not emit any toxic gases.
  14. Damaged places are very simply repaired, leaving no visible traces of repair.
  15. The service life of the coating without changing its color and other properties is 10 years or more.
  16. The ready-to-use composition can be stored in a hermetically sealed plastic container for several months.
  17. With this material, you can create various patterns and applications on the ceiling.

The disadvantages of this material are:

  1. High price. The most expensive are silk wallpapers. Cellulosic ones are cheaper.
  2. The choice of colors is still small.
  3. The coating of liquid wallpaper is not highly water resistant, they cannot be washed.

Preparatory work

Liquid wallpaper is applied to a prepared, clean surface.

Liquid wallpaper can be applied on surfaces made of OSB, brick, cement, drywall, metal, wood, clay. On any of these surfaces, they hold perfectly and do not peel off. Surface preparation is reduced to the achievement of the following indicators:

  1. The ceiling must not have separating sections.
  2. The surface of the ceiling should not actively absorb moisture.

To prepare and apply wallpaper, you will need a basin, wallpaper spatula and water.

  1. From the surface of the ceiling, remove the remains of fallen plaster, old wallpaper, putty.
  2. Fill large gaps. To do this, you can use both a special putty and a small amount of diluted liquid wallpaper.
  3. Prime the ceiling surface. The primer is better to choose a colorless deep penetration. You can use a white primer. It is recommended to dilute the finished primer concentrate with a triple amount of water. Primer Ceresit CT17 is not suitable, because after a while it can cause unpleasant yellow spots on the wallpaper. Can be used as a primer water-based paint white. If the ceiling was whitewashed with chalk, then the primer can be done independently. Its composition: slaked lime - 3 kg; laundry soap - 200 g; drying oil - 100 g.
  4. If there are fittings, corners and other metal objects on the ceiling, they must be painted over with PF enamel, latex or oil paint.
  5. Roughen the ceiling by applying a primer containing quartz dust. You can use a regular primer by adding fine sand to it.
  6. If the ceiling is covered with oil paint or enamel, then they do not need to be removed. It is enough to apply a primer on them.

Preparation of liquid wallpaper

Wallpaper preparation: the mixture is poured into a basin and diluted clean water 20-30 °С.

  1. Packets with dry mix and fillers should be shaken vigorously several times. This will help to avoid the appearance of lumps in the working mixture.
  2. Prepare a container for diluting the composition. You can stir the wallpaper in a basin, bath, bucket. To dilute a package of dry mix, a container with a volume of about 8 liters is required. Practice shows that it is better to use a round container with a diameter of 40-60 cm and a depth of up to 25-30 cm for these purposes. After work, the dishes are easy to clean, so even kitchen utensils can be used.
  3. Water must be clean, its temperature is 20-30 degrees. The temperature itself does not affect the quality of the working composition, but it is more pleasant to work with warm water.
  4. The contents of the package are poured into the container.
  5. About 5 liters of clean drinking water at a comfortable temperature is poured.
  6. The mixture is thoroughly mixed by hand until a homogeneous consistency, reminiscent of heavy cream. Various stirrers and mixers are not recommended. If necessary, water is added in small portions.
  7. Lumps from the solution must be removed immediately.
  8. Let the solution soak for 20-30 minutes.
  9. If decorative additives are included in liquid wallpaper, they should be poured in front of all other components.

It should be remembered that a mixture that is too liquid will drain from the ceiling, and a composition that is too thick is difficult to apply to the surface.

Coating the ceiling

The finished mixture should be homogeneous, without lumps.

The working mixture is applied to the surface of the ceiling with a Plexiglas spatula. Sometimes it is included in the kit along with the dry mix. You can use a stainless steel tool. It is recommended to take a position so that the ceiling level is as close to eye level as possible. It's better to be on the table. If the ceilings are high, then you will have to use a stable ladder.

The spatula must be held so that a small angle forms between its plane and the ceiling (photo No. 2). Do not press too hard on the spatula, as is done when applying plaster or putty. The mass should not be compressed. It is better if it remains loose, it will form a certain relief on the surface of the ceiling.

The process of applying liquid wallpaper resembles spreading caviar on bread. With strong pressure on the spatula, the texture is lost, with insufficient pressure, material consumption increases. The skill is acquired very quickly. With the correct application of the finished working mixture, the layer thickness should be only 1-2 mm. A package of dry composition is enough for 4 sq.m of area. Corners and irregularities slightly increase material consumption.

After covering the entire surface of the ceilings with wallpaper, you need to look at your work from the side. There should be no sagging and bumps, the original color of the ceiling should not show through the coating. If defects are found, they must be corrected immediately. This is done easily and simply until the mixture has dried.

To prevent the formation of visible joints, the mixture must be applied to the entire surface without stopping. The surface covered with liquid wallpaper must be allowed to dry naturally. This usually takes 24-48 hours. You can open windows slightly so that excess moisture evaporates faster. Liquid wallpaper goes well with other finishing materials. This allows you to create various figures, panels, reliefs on the ceiling (photo No. 3).

Liquid wallpaper protection

The wallpaper is covered with acrylic varnish, thus protecting it from moisture and absorbing odors.

Liquid wallpaper has a low degree of moisture resistance, so it is better to protect the finished coating from moisture vapor on it. Acrylic lacquer is ideal for this. It does not contain harmful substances, is an environmentally friendly composition. After the varnish dries, a waterproof coating is formed, which strengthens the material and allows wet cleaning.

Acrylic varnish is recommended to be used even before applying liquid wallpaper to the ceiling. It can be added to the dry mix when mixing the working solution. After the coating has dried, a final thin layer of varnish is applied to it. But all these procedures are not mandatory. At correct use varnish consumption is approximately the following: with one-stage application, 1 liter of varnish is enough for 18-20 sq.m, when applied in 2 stages - for 4 sq.m.

Figure 3. Using liquid wallpaper, you can create any pattern or texture.

  1. All work is carried out at a room temperature of at least +10 degrees.
  2. The room must be well ventilated.
  3. The material can be removed from the surface, mixed and reapplied up to 4 times.
  4. To change the color, coloring pigments are added to the solution.
  5. The liquid wallpaper coating applied to the ceiling can be repaired. When repairing, the damaged part is moistened. This can be done using a special spray gun. Soaked wallpaper with a spatula or other similar tool is removed from the surface and collected in a clean container. The bare section of the ceiling is treated with a primer. The removed wallpaper is soaked, mixed and applied to the repair site. After drying, it becomes completely invisible.
  6. If the ceiling has significant irregularities, best material drywall can be used to level it.

To create a pattern on the ceiling, proceed as follows:

  1. The desired drawing is applied with a pencil.
  2. The finished mixture is applied in a thin layer, slightly going beyond the markup of the pattern.
  3. With a small spatula, the material is shifted to the borders of the pattern.
  4. After the wallpaper layer has dried, the next color is applied, preventing them from mixing.
  5. Separate contours, if desired, can be marked with a marker, beads, sparkles and other decorative elements.

Liquid wallpaper is an excellent finishing material for walls and ceilings. Preparation of the working composition and its application to the surface are not particularly difficult. This job can be done by a person who does not have special training. With the help of such material, you can create all kinds of ornaments on the ceiling and even whole paintings, and to complete the work you need only desire and patience. Processing ceilings with liquid wallpaper has a great future.

Liquid wallpaper for the ceiling is very popular due to the lack of seams, attractive appearance and the possibility of applying to various, even curved surfaces. This is one of the most economical and high-quality ways of decorative finishing.

With the help of liquid wallpaper, you can hide minor defects in the ceiling.

In this article, we will analyze whether liquid wallpaper can be applied to the ceiling, and what needs to be considered when carrying out work.

Decorative material is a mixture of cellulose, silk or cotton fibers with various additives. Produced in the form of dry formulations in hermetically sealed plastic bags.

Depending on the composition are divided:

  1. Cellulosic compositions made from recycled wood with adhesives, plasticizers, dyes and decorative additives. The porous structure of the coating increases the thermal insulation properties of the walls, creates noise protection and helps to smooth out small irregularities on the bases.
  2. Cotton blends containing crushed cotton fibers create a warm, soft matte texture. This finish is ideal for decorating children's rooms.
  3. Silk wallpapers are made from natural or artificial silk fibers, and create an expensive beautiful coverage with a matte finish. One of the main advantages of the material is UV resistance. This finish does not lose its original color for many years, even under direct sunlight.
  4. Mixed compositions in which cotton and cellulose fibers are combined in various proportions with silk, thereby improving the aesthetic performance of the material.

By adding glitter, mica, crushed mineral additives to the composition, you can achieve various decorative effects and give the premises a unique unique look.

The application of liquid wallpaper is similar to the device of thin-layer decorative plaster.

Liquid wallpaper on the ceiling must be applied in strict accordance with the instructions and recommendations on the package.

The finishing process includes:

  • ground preparation;
  • production of decorative mixture;
  • decorating the ceiling with liquid wallpaper.

It is worth paying special attention to the preparation of the bases, as the quality and durability of the entire finish depends on it.

On loose and uneven surfaces, delamination of the decorative mixture may occur.

Ceiling preparation

The substrate to be coated must be clean, dry and free from oil contamination.

The old finish must be removed to the base, the seams between the plates, defects and potholes should be repaired with putty or mortar.

Preparing the ceiling for liquid wallpaper includes puttying and priming the surface twice. Concrete contact can be used as a primer.

The putty will create an even base of white color, which ensures high-quality and uniform application of liquid wallpaper to the ceiling, and the primer - reliable adhesion decorative coating with a base.

Calculation of the required number of wallpapers

The building mixture is made simultaneously for the entire room, especially if you yourself tint the decorative composition.

The required volume of the solution is determined based on the standard consumption indicated in the instructions on the packaging of the material, the thickness of the applied layer, and the coverage area.

The average consumption is from 200 to 300 grams per 1m2 of surface, depending on the thickness of the layer and the texture of the material.

The consumption of the mixture will increase if there are drops and irregularities on the ceiling.

You should not save on material, calculating it at the minimum standard consumption. If there is not enough mixture during the work, a noticeable seam may remain on the ceiling. In addition, the composition of different batches may differ markedly in color.

Consider how to properly apply liquid wallpaper to the ceiling.

Work must be carried out from reliable scaffolding and scaffolding.

Work sequence:

  1. Pour the dry composition into a deep basin and add water at a temperature of 25-30 degrees. Before diluting the dry mixture with water, it is necessary to shake the bag well to ensure the uniformity of the composition and prevent the formation of sticky lumps.
  2. Mix the mixture with your hands until a homogeneous plastic consistency and leave for 10-12 hours to swell.
  3. The finished mixture is applied to the ceiling with a spatula with a layer of 2-3 millimeters.
  4. Smooth the solution over the surface with a transparent trowel or grater, giving the desired texture.

Can be applied with a wide nozzle spray gun.

This creates a loose, rough coating that can be rolled with a hard roller to create a smooth surface, or with a textured one to create a relief pattern or ornament.

It must be borne in mind that moldings, stucco or moldings cannot be attached to a porous surface. ceiling plinth, so they need to be fixed in advance.

Required Tools

To complete the work you will need:

  • large container for preparing the mixture;
  • roller or brush for priming and creating relief patterns;
  • trowel or spatula for applying wallpaper mass to the ceiling;
  • a plastic or plexiglass grater for spreading and smoothing the material;
  • spray gun and hopper bucket if you choose mechanized application of liquid wallpaper.

Finishing ceilings with liquid wallpaper is not difficult. The main thing is to correctly select and prepare the composition, prepare the base well and apply the decorative coating correctly.

Features of finishing the ceiling with liquid wallpaper

Liquid wallpaper, or, as it is correct to say, "silk plaster" have their own characteristics of application. Naturally, we will consider all of them further.

Finishing room

Liquid wallpaper can be applied to the ceiling in any room, but there is a nuance of finishing the ceiling in a bathroom or other room with high humidity. So, after applying liquid wallpaper to the ceiling in the bathroom, they will need to be treated with water-based varnish, applying it in 2 layers after the liquid wallpaper has dried, the drying process of liquid wallpaper lasts 2-4 days.

Varnish can be taken colorless, matte or glossy - this is your choice.

In any other situation, liquid wallpaper on the ceiling is applied in the same way.

Foundation preparation

Special attention should be paid to the preparation of the base. And there are 2 ways here:

  1. It is good to prepare the base: primer, plaster (levelling), putty ...
  2. It is easier to prepare the base.

If with the first option “everything is clear” - everything is done according to the classics of decoration, then in order to apply liquid wallpaper on not prepared ceiling quality you need to understand some of the nuances.

In the first case, you need to understand how to carry out the work, and in the second, how to make sure that there is no need to carry out these works and get high-quality coverage.

In general, silk plaster is not demanding on the quality of the base, since it is a thick tissue-cellulose mass and by itself covers any irregularities and depressions. But it all depends on the specific situation.

  1. If the ceiling has a horizontal difference, then in this case it is still better →, since you can’t hide the horizontal curve of the ceiling with any finish. This applies to ceilings with a noticeable deviation, if the deviation is less than 0.5-1 cm over the entire area, then the unevenness of such a ceiling may not be noticed.
  2. If the base has bulges, it is better to beat them off, or again bring out the entire plane →.
  3. Small depressions are not important, they will be covered with liquid wallpaper, respectively, if you do not prepare the base. Again, it’s better to prime the ceiling and putty with gypsum putty, at the same time you will practice, because especially liquid wallpaper does not differ from putty.
