Everyone knows that the most common diseases can be treated without expensive medicines - it is enough to prepare useful herbs.

Indeed, many medicinal species grow around us, the medicinal properties of which many do not even know.

Meanwhile, competent collection is a guarantee of successful admission in the future. Consider one of these varieties, find out how marshmallow is useful and what use it has found in.

Description and habitat

This is a perennial herbaceous species from the Malvaceae family. This variety is distinguished by its size - the minimum height is 60 cm with a maximum of 2 m.

Its stems are straight, not particularly branched. There are usually several of them on one plant (single ones are less common). In the lower part, the green-gray "trunks" are woody, and the thickest of them have a characteristic mesh pattern of oblong grooves.

Did you know? In Soviet times, some farms Krasnodar Territory marshmallows were grown on an industrial scale. Some arrays are included in circulation to this day (although the volumes are far from the same).

The leaves are arranged alternately, with a thick "fluff" on the bottom plate. Depending on the point of growth, they differ in shape and size. So, the lower ones have one or two lobes and a rounded, somewhat blunt shape (with a length of up to 6 cm).
The middle and upper ones are already larger (up to 15 cm with a width of 5-12 cm) and more expressive - pointed, with a wide wedge-shaped base.

The inflorescence in the form of a dense spikelet “shoots” in summer (most often from the second decade of June), then dense arrays of small (up to 1 cm) neat flowers with a pinkish or white corolla are visible on short pedicels. Often larger ones appear on the sinuses - 3-4 cm in diameter.

Important! A strong root instantly absorbs any substances that have fallen into the ground. So refrain from collecting medicinal herb growing near busy highways.

From August to October it bears fruit - flat polyseeds ripen, inside which smooth seeds (gray or brown in color) are located. Their usual "dimensions" are 2.5 x 2 mm.

A description of such a variety as marshmallow medicinal will be incomplete without mentioning its main "healing part" - the rhizome. The woody main root in the form of a powerful rod can reach a length of 40-50 cm with a diameter of 2 cm. It is overgrown with fleshy white lateral shoots.
In regions with a temperate climate, forest and forest-steppe belts, marshmallow grows everywhere - its massifs can be seen in coastal thickets and floodplains, meadows and swampy valleys. But in the north, such a plant was not accepted.

Chemical composition

Althea roots contain a lot of useful compounds. The main ones are:

  • mucous substances (about 35%). During heat treatment, they decompose into arabinose and galactose, dextrose and pentose;
  • starch (35%);
  • pectin (not less than 11%);
  • sugar (8%);
  • amino acids like betaine (3-4%) and asparagine (from 2%);
  • fatty oils (about 1.5%);
  • mineral salts;
  • lecithin and carotene in small proportions.
Note that these are average figures for this variety - the content of auxiliary "ingredients" may vary depending on the condition and weather conditions. For example, in a root grown on light, drained soil, asparagine can already be 15-20%.

Did you know? The conventional wisdom that almost all plants can be used for treatment is a myth. Of more than 500 thousand species, only 12 thousand are considered medicinal (a ratio of about 1:40 is obtained).

The leaves of the marshmallow are more saturated with mucus. Moreover, they have many essential oil and ascorbic acid.

There are also seeds that have saturated compounds. A whole line of linoleic acids stands apart (their share reaches 56%) with the addition of oleic compounds.

Medicinal properties

Thanks to this composition, the inconspicuous-looking marshmallow is distinguished by enviable healing "abilities". They are most pronounced at the root.
With proper processing, the prepared rhizome:

  • smoothes the inflammation of the mucous membranes (the resulting mucus gently envelops them, softening the plaque);
  • removes sputum accumulated in the respiratory tract (that is, it is used as an expectorant drug);
  • normalizes the process of regeneration (tissue repair);
  • eliminates "failures" in the work of the gallbladder and excretory tract (relieving unpleasant burning sensation);
  • gently acting on the gastric and intestinal walls, "knocks down" increased acidity;
  • with the correct calculation of the dose, it plays the role of a fixing composition in the case of diarrhea.

Important! Homemade decoctions based on marshmallow should not be taken simultaneously with "factory" drugs that thicken sputum and dehydrate the body.

Seeds also help a lot in the treatment of sore throats, flu or pleurisy. A decoction of seeds can relieve female body from postpartum discharge, while improving urine output.

The leaves are used much less frequently, but they also have their own “specialization” - they are useful for women who suffer from breast tumors.

Application

With such an impressive track record, it is widely used to treat various diseases. But its properties have long been noted by cosmetologists.

In medicine

The main scope of this plant is, of course, traditional medicine. Although the "official" fully approves the use of infusions (of course, as directed by a doctor). The attending specialist can "prescribe" marshmallow in such cases:

  • at acute inflammation throat and respiratory tract;
  • for the treatment of cough with copious mucus;
  • if the mucous membrane of the gastrointestinal tract and adjacent tracts is irritated;
  • to neutralize abscesses and the fastest healing of wounds. Also, the mild effect of the herb is indispensable if you want to “calm down” an inflamed nerve or restore a damaged muscle;
  • infusion can be prescribed for the treatment of joints (if there are no deep changes in their structure).

Note that nutritionists also know about the properties of such a plant - the ability of marshmallow to improve peristalsis is often used when planning a course of weight loss.

In cosmetology

We already know about the beneficial effects of marshmallow roots on the skin. But that's not all: in addition to quick healing, the roots also moisturize the cover, eliminating the effects of dryness.

The liquid obtained after treatment will help strengthen the hair, at the same time solving the problem of irritation (many people experience this unpleasant itch on the top of their head).

With regular use of the decoction, the hair will stop falling out, and the natural acids present in the rhizome will quickly stimulate their growth. And all this without any chemicals.

Traditional medicine recipes

Having already prepared and dried marshmallow root on their hands, many are wondering how to brew it. There is nothing tricky here, and you will see this by reading the most popular recipes.

The easiest way is to make the so-called cold infusion, which relieves inflammation of the skin and mucous membranes of the eyes:

  • Chopped root (1 tbsp. L) is poured cold water and let it brew for an hour.
  • Then the liquid is decanted through cheesecloth, not forgetting to wring it out well.
  • Take this medicine in a tablespoon, with a break of 2-3 hours. For a more pleasant taste, you can add a little. Also, the resulting extract is often used for compresses at night.

Important! Too old plants are bypassed when harvested. Them root system it is very massive and becomes very stiff - it is far from always possible to clean such material.

Inflammation of the gums, pharynx or tonsils is already a “front of work” for hot infusion (it is sometimes called steam):

  • Taking 15 g of already crushed root, it is poured with a glass of boiling water.
  • This is followed by a 15-minute boil in a water bath (on low heat).
  • The container removed from the stove is set aside for 20 minutes for subsequent filtering.
  • The scheme of reception is the same - on a spoon in 3 hours. It is advisable to take warm liquid. For cooling, you can put it in the refrigerator, but not more than 2 days - after that, useful compounds will begin to "volatilize".

But the most popular folk recipes- this, of course, is a cough remedy, with which marshmallow cracks down very quickly (as with bronchitis). Making it simple:

  • To begin with, the roots are cut into large slices (and not small) and the workpiece is placed in cheesecloth, which is hung over an empty saucepan or deep bowl.
  • Warm water is poured through such a “sieve” (100 g is enough).
  • After letting the liquid drain, the “run” is repeated 8-10 times.
  • At the very end, the resulting water is diluted with a couple of tablespoons of sugar and heated.
  • Before taking such a syrup, be sure to dilute it with water (50 ml per teaspoon).

Most often, children are treated with such compounds. Naturally, the dosage is adjusted according to age. So, babies under 6 years old are prescribed a 5-fold dose (0.5 tsp), while older ones (6-12 years old) are already given a teaspoon. 12 years and more - you can give a tablespoon with the same frequency.

To combat acute bronchitis and pneumonia in adults, use the following recipe:

  • 20 g of roots are poured with vodka (500 ml) and the container is tightly closed. She is put in a dark corner for 10 days.
  • After this period, the liquid is filtered and taken before meals three times a day (maximum 15 drops).
  • It is advisable to add a little warm water to smooth out the alcohol smell.
You can’t give such a tincture to children anymore, and older people don’t always risk using it - the composition turns out to be “heavy” for a weakened stomach.

By the way, about the stomach. Marshmallow helps to get rid of ulcers. For best effect its root is mixed with rhizomes and licorice (in equal proportions).
After grinding such a collection, 1 tablespoon of the “mix” is poured with a glass of boiling water, after which it is boiled for 5 minutes over low heat, covering the container with a lid. Usually this is done in the evening, in order to drink a glass of decoction before going to bed while still warm.

Older people will certainly be interested in a simple recipe for the treatment of joints. It is enough to pour 10 g of a small root, usually with water in a volume of 200 ml, and leave for an hour. After that, it remains to strain and add a little sugar. 2-3 spoons every 4-5 hours will help get rid of discomfort.

For severe diarrhea they drink a decoction of equally mixed marshmallow and branches with. 30 g of the mixture is supplemented with 1 liter of red wine. Daily intake of warm liquid (120 ml) is carried out 4 times - on an empty stomach and an hour after each meal.

But there is one caveat: people with high blood pressure, "problem" vessels and disorders in the work of the heart, it is better to refrain from such treatment.

Important! Buying herbal collection in the market, be sure to ask the seller when and where the workpiece was made. It would not be superfluous to clarify the name of the species - of the 12 lines of Althea, only 2 have healing properties(actually, medicinal and similar Armenian).

Speaking of the root, do not forget about the healthy juice from the leaves and stems of Althea. It is used for any violations in the work of the respiratory tract, at the same time neutralizing and gastritis.

For such purposes, they take blanks collected in the summer (the July collection is best). The squeezed juice is mixed with honey and consumed three times a day, a tablespoon.

Collection and storage of medicinal raw materials

For medicinal collection plants that have been growing in one place for at least 2 years are suitable - “first-years” or just emerging arrays simply will not give the expected effect.

April-May are considered the best time to collect the roots (if the spring was cold, you can also collect in the fall, while preparing the seeds at the same time). They try to take stems with leaves in June - early July, during flowering and peak circulation of juice. In the case of the root, the primary processing looks like this:

  • The dug out rhizome is cleared of the earth and stalks.
  • Then comes the turn of the taproot (aka "wooden") root and capitate segments. Do not forget to remove non-woody shoots.
  • The workpiece is washed and dried for 3-4 days.
  • During further cutting, the raw material is cut into pieces of 25-30 cm, splitting the thickest fragments in the longitudinal direction. At the same time, the “cork” is also removed - that's it, the root is cleaned.

Did you know? Historians are convinced that medicine as such began precisely with the use of roots for medicinal purposes - primitive people tried in this way to get rid of annoying ailments (mainly problems with teeth).

  • The resulting material is stored in a warm, well-ventilated area. In summer, you can put it in the attic, and with the onset of cold weather, wrap it in cotton fabric or hang it in a closet.

With this content, all collected parts of the plant will retain their beneficial features within 3 years.

Contraindications and side effects

We made sure that the marshmallow root has extensive medicinal properties, but, like any healing agent, there are contraindications.

There are not so many of them, but you can’t discount them (as well as self-medicate).

Reception of tinctures, decoctions and juice obtained from this plant is prohibited if there are such health problems:

  • individual intolerance;
  • chronic hypertension;
  • diabetes.

Side effects can manifest themselves in the form of allergic reactions (therefore, the first couple of doses are often taken in reduced doses to observe the body's reaction). If you “go overboard” with the dose or increase the frequency of the intake, then the appearance of severe nausea or vomiting is not excluded.

It has long been known that marshmallow root, when ingested or in contact with water, forms mucus. Because of these properties, marshmallows are even popularly called slime-grass.

Thanks to them, the plant is used in medicine as an enveloping agent, which promotes the rapid healing of tissues, relieves local inflammatory processes.

Althea root preparations also have a pronounced expectorant effect, which determines the main indications for their use.

The medicinal properties of the plant became widely known as early as the 10th century and were mentioned in their writings by the great physician Avicenna.

Instructions for use

The active substances contained in marshmallow roots envelop the mucous membranes, thus protecting them from irritation and additional damage.

This property allows marshmallow to be used to relieve the dry, irritating cough that often occurs with diseases such as whooping cough or laryngitis.

At the same time, this medicinal raw material is able to thin viscous sputum and reflexively promote its expectoration. This allows you to use it for diseases that are accompanied by a wet cough.

In folk and official medicine, other parts of the plant are also used, such as leaves, flowers and seeds. But it was the roots of marshmallow that received the most widespread use.

Mucous substances are able to retain microbial and viral products, as well as other toxins, preventing their contact with mucous membranes and thus providing a kind of antibacterial effect.

In addition, the roots in their composition contain pectin, a lot of starchy compounds and other biologically active components.

Indications for use

  • dysentery.

Diseases of the bronchi and lungs:

Syrups based on this raw material are used orally, tablets are absorbed. The duration of treatment is 1 - 2 weeks.

Infusions are prepared independently from raw materials purchased at a pharmacy or prepared independently. To prepare the infusion you need:

  1. Prepare a water bath and enamelware.
  2. Place 1 tablespoon of roots and a glass of boiled cool water in an enamel bowl.
  3. Put in a water bath and heat for 15 to 30 minutes.
  4. Cool 45 minutes at room temperature.
  5. Squeeze concentrated infusion through gauze.
  6. Bring the resulting volume of infusion to 200 ml with boiled water.
  7. Store the finished infusion in a cool place for no more than two days.

Due to the fact that marshmallow contains a lot of starch, then with diarrhea it is used not only as a remedy, but also as a nutrient.
