According to the design features and the specifics of the application, adjustable floors are divided into two types:

1. Systems consisting of dense, durable chipboard boards, adjustable in a horizontal plane using special fixtures made of heavy-duty plastic. They are preferred to be installed in new buildings, as the leveling power of the slabs raises the floor surface to a minimum height of 3-5 cm. Despite the small size of the technological space under the raised floors, it is still possible to lay cables and thin insulating material.

2. Practical floors on adjustable joists, the laying technology of which is similar to the standard device of a multi-layer cake with lag bars. The difference lies in the strong fixation of the elements to a concrete or wooden base and in the precise adjustment of the horizontals. This type of floor is used for arranging apartments in old buildings and luxury housing with the planned "underground" laying of communication pipelines and cables.

One of the valuable priorities of these leveling structures is the reliable fixation of the entire system to a wooden or concrete base.

More precisely, threaded anchor devices are firmly attached to the base material, the rotation of which around its own axis allows you to increase and decrease the height of the subfloor level. Easy-to-install adjustable floor supports attach:

  • to wooden floor beams using self-tapping screws;
  • to concrete slabs hollow inside and to the surface with a concrete screed with polypropylene hedgehog dowels for brick and concrete;
  • to a monolithic concrete base floor with dowel-nails.

  • from the back, bushings are inserted into the drilled holes, on the inner surface of which a thread is laid, the step between the holes depends on the expected load;
  • then, rack bolts made of durable polymer are screwed into the holes with bushings;
  • the assembled element is installed on the floor;
  • bolts are fastened to the base;
  • with the help of the rotation of the rack-bolts around the axis, the horizontal plane is aligned;
  • the remnants of the bolts rising above the surface are cut off;
  • then the next layer of flooring is overlapped.

The butt joints between the slabs of the first decking layer must not coincide with the location of the joints of the second layer.

The stud will act as a support bolt that is attached to the base surface through a drive-in anchor. The support for the beam will be a metal plate attached to the stud with a bolt and a pair of nuts. This nut will be used for adjustment. Another nut with a bolt is needed to fix the beam from above. In order for the upper nut not to subsequently interfere with the laying of the finishing material, a groove is made in the log from above. The excess hairpin is cut off after alignment.

A self-made or bought at a hardware store leveling adjustable system will significantly reduce the budget for repairs or fine finishing in a new building. A quick clean installation will make it possible to eliminate wet, dirty and rather expensive processes.

The new technology involves the use of wooden logs or slabs (sheets of moisture-resistant plywood), which are supported by stand-up bolts screwed into them, usually made of high-strength plastic. Due to the rotation of the bolts around their axis, the height of the log or sheets changes, which allows you to accurately level the subfloor. After leveling the substructure, the bolt is rigidly fixed to the base with a dowel-nail. Moreover, the base can be either concrete (monolithic, hollow, base with a screed), or wooden (beam). Sheets of moisture-resistant plywood are usually laid on top of the logs, and any type of floor covering is already fixed on them - parquet, parquet board, laminate, linoleum, carpet, etc. In order to save money, massive boards are sometimes mounted directly on the logs.

System advantages

Such adjustable structures have a number of advantages. First of all they have advantages over concrete leveling. They are cheaper than a concrete screed if it is necessary to level the surface with a height difference of more than 3-5 cm. In addition, they allow you to save money when arranging a base for plank flooring (parquet, parquet board, laminate), because concrete preparation in this case will include not only a screed, but also a self-levelling mixture (do not forget also about the need to create plywood flooring over the screed, on which the plank floor will be laid).

In aggregate, the costs of such preparation will be higher than the costs of installing an adjustable structure. Not less than important point: concrete screed acquires the necessary strength within 28 days. While the installation of adjustable poles usually lasts less than a week, since one worker mounts an average of 20-25 m2 of adjustable logs or slabs per day. Moreover, according to VSN 9-94 "Instructions for the installation of floors in residential and public buildings”, the humidity of the screed should not exceed 5% in order to avoid deformation of the wooden floor. Note that European standards require drying of the screed up to 3-4%. It is a mistake to assume that it dries to this level in 28 days: this process takes longer than the curing process, and usually takes several months. There is no direct contact in the design of adjustable feet wooden elements with the base of the floor, and therefore, it is possible to lay logs on top of the concrete floor, and then plywood and parquet, without waiting for the concrete to dry completely. In the case of an overlap with high humidity, you can lay a plastic film on top of it, thereby cutting off water vapor, and then immediately start installing the log or slabs. Finally, the adjustable design allows air to move under the floor and thereby remove excess water vapor that can lead to warping and rotting of the wood. The inflow and exhaust of air is carried out due to the gaps between the floor and the wall of the room (from above it is closed with a plinth, but there is also a gap between it and the floor). The standard value of this gap is 10 mm. If you need to increase the ventilation of the space under the subfloor, then you can install decorative grilles in the floor in opposite corners of the room for additional air inflow and exhaust. We add that in regulated systems it is recommended to use only moisture-resistant plywood (grades not lower?) and logs from chamber-drying timber with a moisture content of not more than 12%.

Another advantage of adjustable structures is that they increase the sound insulation of the room: the floor is not monolithic, but contains an air layer in its “pie”, which dampens noise. In addition, plastic racks prevent the spread of noise. If it is necessary to significantly increase the sound or heat insulation of the floor (for example, in the premises of a home theater or basement), mineral wool slabs can be laid between the joists. The plates are laid on metal plates fixed on the logs. The thickness of the insulating layer can be varied, moreover, there is usually no contact between the slabs and the concrete floor (an air gap remains between them), therefore, in the case high humidity overlapping insulation will remain dry. The next point: height-adjustable structures make it possible to lay engineering communications (pipes with a diameter of more than 50 mm) and any wiring under the floor covering. Moreover, engineering communications will follow the shortest path, so there will be fewer connecting nodes, which means that the reliability of the system will be higher and the cost of its installation will be lower. One of the problems that arise during the operation of a wooden floor is creaking. Is it likely to appear in floors on adjustable joists or slabs? Experts say that with a quality installation of the system, there will be no creaking. It can occur when the floor elements do not fit tightly to each other, for example, when the bolts are screwed incorrectly or the plywood layers laid over the log are of poor quality. However, with qualified installation, all elements of the system are so firmly fixed on the base and interconnected that even a slight drying out of wood, according to experts, will not result in floor creaking. However, a knock on the floor is possible if the concrete base on which the logs rest is made with errors: for example, if the screed applied to the ceiling crumbles or cracks. Then it is recommended to remove a bad screed before installing the floor, as well as to correctly select the dowel-nail model for attaching the bolt to the base. We add that the maximum allowable load on adjustable structures is at least 3 tons per 1 m2. Their estimated service life is at least 50 years.

Assembly of the structure

If it is necessary to raise the floor to a height of 5 cm or more, install the design of adjustable logs. If the required lifting height is from 3 to 5 cm, then a system of adjustable plates (plywood) is used. Let's start with the first option. When installing the floor on a concrete floor, logs with a section of 45x45 mm and a length of 2 or 3 m are most often used. Their standard step is 30 cm between the axes of the bars. When laying the floor on a floor of wooden beams, logs of a larger section are usually required, the value of which is selected taking into account the step of the beams (as a rule, logs with a section of 45x70 mm are used). You can also vary the step lag. For each log there are 5 bolt-racks for which threaded holes are prepared at the factory. The length of the bolts is usually 100 or 150 mm: it is chosen depending on how high the floor needs to be raised. Installation of the structure begins with the fact that bolts are screwed into the logs, then the logs are laid out on the base with the required step, and holes for the dowel-nails are marked. Moreover, a gap of about 10 mm is left between the lags and the walls. Next, the bars are shifted to the side, holes are drilled to a shallow depth, the bars are returned to their place and the dowels are sunk through the bolts with a hammer and a doboynik into the prepared holes. After that, they begin to level the lag by rotating the bolts with hex keys (the bolts have a hex groove), using a level. Having completed the alignment, the dowels are hammered all the way into the base, and the protruding part of the plastic bolt is cut flush with a chisel. Then plywood flooring is mounted. According to the recommendations of the system manufacturers, the thickness of the deck should be at least 18 mm. However, some parquet companies recommend to arrange under parquet, solid board and flooring up to 30 mm thick with a lag step of 30 cm. Usually two layers of sheets are laid (overlapping the joint of the two lower ones with the top sheet) to ensure maximum rigidity of the structure. As a rule, plywood layers are fastened with self-tapping screws, however, when laying parquet, parquet companies recommend that the top layer be glued to the bottom one as well. A floor covering is mounted on top of the plywood.

In the case of floors on adjustable slabs and on logs without ready-made threaded holes, the installation technology is somewhat different. A hole is drilled in plywood or log, into which a plastic sleeve is inserted, which has a threaded hole. The sleeve is fixed on a log or plywood with self-tapping screws. Then a bolt-rack is screwed into the sleeve, after which the entire cycle of the above works is performed.
We add that there are other adjustable designs on the market. In particular, systems where metal rack bolts are used, and the adjustment takes place with the help of a nut screwed on them with a support washer. There are also systems with U-shaped metal brackets that “wrap around” the log from the sides and fix it with self-tapping screws. The bracket has a number of holes, and after alignment, the screws are screwed into holes that are suitable in height.

“Adjustable floors on logs or on plywood boards have obvious advantages over concrete leveling, if we are not talking about an abstract “concrete screed”, but about a base for parquet, parquet board or laminate, which includes a screed layer, a layer of self-leveling mixture and plywood layer. Adjustable structures are cheaper than such a base, especially when it is necessary to level the floor with strong differences in height. In addition, a concrete screed gains strength within 28 days, while the installation of an adjustable floor usually takes from 2-3 days to a week. In addition, engineering communications and wiring can be laid under the adjustable floor, and, if necessary, heat and sound insulation plates. However, in itself, such a floor increases the sound insulation of the room due to the air "cushion" between the floor covering and the ceiling, as well as through the use of plastic bolts-racks.

3. Sheets of the first level are laid on the floor surface

4. Sheets are attached to the floor with dowels.

5. Using the key, the floor height is adjusted by twisting the threaded bushings.

6. Be sure to use the building level.

7. All protruding parts (threaded bushings) must be cut off.

8. If a second layer of plywood is provided, it is laid on top of the first one and fixed with self-tapping screws.

When laying the second layer, it is important to follow the sequence of laying sheets. And ensure that there is no construction debris between them. To do this, the surface must be vacuumed.

The seams of the previous layer should not coincide with the seams of the next. Figuratively speaking, they should be placed like bricks, overlapping each other.

9. Flooring is laid.

Option 2 - Floors adjustable by joists

1. Drill holes in the log beam. The distance between them should be within 300-450 mm. The higher the load is planned on the floor, the more often the logs should be drilled.

2. The arrangement of the lag begins with the ends that are attached to the floor. Then the middle of the beam is attached. It is important not to immediately tighten the bolts to the end in order to be able to adjust them.
