How to insulate wooden windows for the winter with your own hands. How to insulate plastic windows for the winter. Replacement of the mounting seam, installation of insulated slopes and window sills How to insulate plastic windows yourself

We installed or moved into the house with existing plastic windows. We believe that we will no longer have to return to the issue of reliable thermal insulation of window openings in our housing. Alas, it is not.

The question of how to insulate a plastic window may become relevant again. Perhaps, after the installation of window structures, even a little time will pass when you have to solve it.

Of course, companies that produce and install windows give them their warranty period. We have the right, before its completion, to make claims to them and demand the promised thermal insulation properties of the window. But, and the warranty period once ends.

It also happens that residents of regions with winter temperatures below minus 30 want to improve the thermal insulation properties of installed plastic windows. Such an option is possible. And for this there are appropriate materials.

Selection of PVC windows, control over their installation

We solve the issue of reliability and quality of the thermal insulation properties of window openings on our own even at the stage of making a decision on the installation of plastic windows.

If we ourselves do not have experience, skills in installing PVC windows, then we must responsibly approach the options:

  • Which company to entrust the installation of plastic window structures.
  • Windows and accessories, which manufacturer we will install.
  • Profile type, how many air chambers we choose in it (three chambers are optimal, but more are possible).
  • What type of double-glazed window we will order (for better thermal insulation, we choose energy-saving). We choose its width, the number of chambers, the sealant, what the chambers between the glasses will be filled with, what coating will be applied to them.

How to make this choice? Contact the experts, get acquainted with the design of plastic windows, with products from different manufacturers, with the offers of window construction installers, with the documentation for PVC windows.

It is useful to familiarize yourself with GOSTs for PVC windows and their installation:

  • GOST 26602.1-1999 Heat transfer.
  • GOST 26602.2-1999 Air - and water permeability.
  • GOST 26602.3-1999 Sound insulation.
  • GOST 26602.4-1999 Light transmission.
  • GOST 26602.5-2001 Wind load resistance.
  • GOST 30673-1999 PVC profiles.
  • GOST 30674-1999 PVC profile blocks.
  • GOST 30971-2002 Mounting seams.
  • GOST 52749-2007-8922 PSUL.

Decide on the questions above. The next step is to carefully control the process of installing plastic windows. Whatever quality windows we choose, it is from them professional installation 90 percent depends on the warmth and comfort in your home.

Correct technology and detailed instructions competent installation PVC windows are installed by regulatory documents.

It does not hurt, before controlling the actions of window installers, you will familiarize yourself with them, these are:

  • the main "mounting" GOST 30971 - 2002 "Mounting seams of adjoining window blocks to wall openings. General technical conditions".
  • SNiP 23 - 02 - 2003. "Thermal protection of buildings".

Important! We must insist that the contract with the company that installs PVC windows for us includes the requirement for their installation in accordance with the above GOST.

Before installation, check:

  1. How the window opening is prepared for the installation of a plastic window. We check the vertical slope, horizontal level with a liquid level.
  2. What are the dimensions of the gaps left between the wall and the frame of the double-glazed window. The gaps should be no more than the length of a matchbox (no more than 5 cm), but not less than 15 mm. A gap of less than 15 mm will be problematic to evenly and reliably fill with foam insulation.

During installation, we control:

  1. In order for the mounting seams between the window and the wall to be performed with high quality, and along their entire perimeter, according to the principle “tighter from the inside than from the outside” in three layers of sealing:
  • from the street - climate protection;
  • inside - a heater;
  • from the side of housing - vapor barrier protection.
  1. How tightly and completely window installers fill these gaps with mounting foam.
  1. Pay special attention to the fact that the gaps are filled with high-quality mounting foam. These are polyurethane foams, foams specially designed for window installation.
  1. Make sure that slopes and window sills are properly and reliably insulated.

Useful advice! Do not spare the money to establish external slopes. They will help the mounting foam retain its properties as a heater longer.

Insulation of window structures and glazed loggias

But, even with the correct observance of the technology for installing PVC windows, there is a need for their insulation by the winter period. Or maybe you moved into a new building, where the window PVC structures installed massively, with poor-quality fit.

Revision and control of windows readiness for winter

Before deciding how to insulate plastic windows do we first revise them with our own hands before the onset of cold weather?

First you need to identify the very presence of air leakage through the plastic window construction. Determine in which node, in which place of the structure there is such a leak. You can decide here by the behavior of the flame of the lighter when you hold it around the perimeter of the window or simply with the help of your hand.

Note! Before winter, do not forget to move the summer-winter adjustment mechanism to the maximum protection position.

Replacement of glazing beads, seals.

If an air passage is detected near the double-glazed window due to a problematic glazing bead (lining), with which the double-glazed window itself is fixed, then we change it:

  • using a narrow spatula, pry and pull out the old glazing bead;
  • using a rubber mallet, lightly tapping, install a new glazing bead.

Visual representation of lining replacement

If necessary, we replace the seal itself, which has lost its elasticity, between the double-glazed window and the frame:

  1. Remove the glazing beads (you need to start with the side plates).
  2. Remove the double-glazed window by first pulling out the lining.
  3. Remove the old seal tape.
  4. Cut off a new sealing tape equal to the length of the old one (preferably with a margin of 3 - 5 cm).
  5. Carefully, without compression and tension, lay a whole tape of a new sealant, cut off the excess piece with scissors.
  6. Reinstall the double-glazed window, linings, glazing beads.

If air leaks are found near the frame, then the problem is with the clamping elements. In this case, possible reasons:

  1. the sash is weakly pressed (with a hex key, which is used to assemble furniture, or a screwdriver with an appropriate nozzle, pliers on the open sash in the hole on the side of the handle and hinges, press the sash more tightly against the base);
  2. poorly fitted seals around the perimeter of the frame and sash:
  • Remove the old seal;
  • Clear the place of its bookmark from possible debris;
  • Lay a solid strip of new sealant into the groove of the sash and frame (the length of the extension must exactly match the length of the groove);
  • We glue the new laid sealant.

Note! Try to buy new seals from the manufacturers or installers of your windows. When cleaning the profile surfaces where you will lay the profile, use PVC cleaners.

Do not forget to take care of the installed seals, wipe with a sponge with warm soapy water, lubricate with glycerin or silicone oil.

When preparing housing for winter, the question arises, how to insulate metal-plastic windows additionally? How to improve the thermal insulation properties of the glass unit itself? And most importantly, how to insulate plastic windows?

These issues are easily resolved. We insulate PVC windows with heat-saving PVI -. During production, its surface is covered with a special metal coating.

Such a coating reflects infrared rays, effectively preventing heat loss from living rooms. Insulation of the loggia (balcony), which are glazed with window PVC systems, can also be effectively solved with the help of such a film "glass insulation".

Film - an option on the way to warmth

A good choice, protection and insulation for plastic windows is a heat-saving window ceramic IR film (for example, the KorQu models of the PREMIUM IR 6070 and IR 6560 series).

And, in combination with a warm floor in the rooms and on the loggia, such film insulation for plastic windows will create an even greater effect in winter, because such films will reflect the heat of the warm floors towards its source, i.e. back to the rooms and the glazed loggia.

This method of insulating PVC windows in living rooms and loggias is inexpensive. And the price, when heat losses are reduced to 60 percent, is no longer so important.

Installing such a film on double-glazed windows of plastic windows is a simple process. It is simply glued to the glass itself and smoothed out. For convenience, you can use a plastic wallpaper spatula.

How to insulate plastic windows using heat-saving film:

  1. Preparing windows (we clean, wipe with a wet sponge).
  2. We prepare the film (after removing the protective layer, we wet it).
  3. We wet the glass.
  4. We stick and level the film, using a plastic spatula, on a double-glazed window.
  5. Cut off the excess part of the film with a cutter.

Replacement of the mounting seam, installation of insulated slopes and window sills

Over time, you have to look for the answer to the question of how to insulate plastic windows from the outside. It is bad if you did not install external slopes in time, which should protect the heat-insulating layer of mounting foam from natural phenomena, did not insulate them.

Then the foam, as a heater, will serve its time faster, will begin to lag behind the wall, the drafts that have appeared will transfer the “dew” point to the internal slopes.

If it is necessary to repair the foam heat-insulating layer and its climatic protection, we perform the following actions:

  1. We remove the old foam from the gap between the window and the wall (you can use a chisel).
  2. We spray the gap with water (so that the mounting foam sets better after).
  3. Fill this gap with new foam.
  4. To protect the foam, cover the gaps with a sealant (for example, Belinka acrylic sealant, Dymonic NT polyurethane sealant).
  5. We install external insulated slopes. As a heater, you can use expanded polystyrene foam (polystyrene, dimensions of 2 cm or more), mineral wool, EPS (extruded polystyrene foam). Some use ready-made insulated pvc slope, having bought it in stores like Maksidom. It is a plastic, dimensions 2200x300x10 (mm), filled with extruded polystyrene.
  6. We do an inspection of the window sill. If necessary, insulate the window sill.

How to insulate the window sill of PVC windows?

The window sill can be insulated with polystyrene foam (expanded polystyrene foam).

  1. Cut out the styrofoam to the desired size.
  2. We grab it with mounting foam.
  3. We lay a window sill on top of the foam.

Important! Do not fasten the window sill with self-tapping screws to the plastic window. Use pads to secure it.

Output

In the presented video in this article you will find additional information on this topic.

Most likely, the installation of metal-plastic windows was part of your plan for insulating a house or apartment. And now this element itself needs to be insulated, but there should not be anywhere to blow ... Why is it blowing? Properly installed metal-plastic windows do not need insulation. But, if mistakes were made during installation or a long period passed during which the double-glazed window was not serviced, insulation of PVC windows may well be required.

To understand how to solve the problem, you need to find out what elements the window consists of. Below in the diagram you can see all the main details.

So, now you need to find out which details most often cause difficulties.

It can be:

  • Joint (seam) between the frame and the wall (window sill, slopes);
  • Glass fittings;
  • Glazing bead (The element by which the glass is held - if it blows from under the glass).
  • Sealant.

Here we have built the causes not according to any principle, but only in a chaotic order. But, a little further we will understand the reasons sequentially - going from the very simple solution, to the most complex (labor-intensive, labor-intensive). We will see that insulating windows with your own hands is not as difficult as it might seem at first.

Window problems

In the last subheading, we dealt with structural elements that can cause problems and may require insulation of double-glazed windows. Employees of one Kiev company identify the three most common:

  • Out of service for a long time and in poor condition rubber compressor. This insulating element plays an important role in thermal insulation;
  • Lack of tight contact between the sash and the frame. For example, this can happen due to skewed loops;
  • Poorly made initially and destroyed as a result of erosion, the seam between the frame and the window opening.

How to find out what is the problem in a particular case?

This stage of PVC window insulation usually does not raise questions. A person may not know what the element is called, but where it blows from is most often easy to determine. Most use one of the three proven methods.

  • Check with a candle or lighter. Light a candle and bring it to the gap between the frame and the wall or between the sash and the frame. In the place where the candle goes out, a cold stream is passed. There you need to conduct surveys;
  • The sash clamp must be very tight. You shouldn't pull from under it. To check the clamp for “strength”, insert a sheet of paper into the sash and slam it shut by turning the handle. If the sheet falls out, the fittings may need to be adjusted. Or the window may be in "summer mode";
  • Although the third method is more expensive, it can help to identify problems not only in windows - a thermal imaging study. With the help of special equipment, heat leakage zones can be determined. An example snapshot is shown below.

Summer and winter window modes

If you open the sash and look at its end, you can see several pressure rollers. They are then responsible for adjusting the pressure density, in fact, the summer and winter modes. Using a special key, adjust the degree of pressure, sealing the sash to the frame. In some profiles, you can do without a key by turning such rollers manually.

On the pressure roller itself, you can see a notch. If it is turned closer to the sealing gum, it means winter mode, and if it is turned outward, it means summer mode.

For more information on how you can change the window mode, see the video.

So, at this stage, we have already dealt with the structure of the window itself, found out which elements can cause difficulties, and found out what problems residents most often face. Now let's look at the most common problems and find out how to solve them.

Handles, hinges...

Do-it-yourself window insulation should begin with fittings. As employees of the same Kiev company for the repair and installation of windows say, if the problem is not started, it can often be solved by adjusting the fittings. Since the topic of our article is still thermal insulation of windows, it’s only worth saying here that the average cost of ordering an adjustment in a company in Kyiv costs about 100-150 UAH. (4 dollars), and in Moscow 400-700 rubles. You can fix this moment yourself by watching the video:

Sealing gum

In the CIS countries, for various reasons, it is unpleasant to regularly carry out service maintenance. This leads to premature or very severe wear of various parts. Therefore, when deciding how to insulate windows, make sure that the sealing elements of the windows are in good condition.

Seals are located on the frame, as well as on the sash. In most cases, removable parts are installed that can be easily replaced. How do you know if the seal needs to be replaced? One of the methods was given at the beginning of the article.

Second. Open the sash and feel the seal. If it is hard (and especially if it starts to crumble - it needs to be replaced). There is also an easier way. Test without getting up from the chair.

The seal needs to be lubricated at intervals of approximately 6 months. If such a procedure has not been carried out for at least 3 years - 90% of the fact that the gum needs to be replaced.

What is the best way to insulate windows? There is no definite answer, but the seal must be changed exactly.

In a separate article, we have already described in detail how the procedure is carried out, and showed a video.

A small summary of this section. Two small but most common problems with window insulation are fittings and cutters in plastic windows. But, there are also more "severe patients" who need "hospitalization". In such cases, the problem is usually with the window sill or low tide.

Low tide

How to insulate a plastic window with your own hands if problems are observed at the bottom of the window? The first thing that might come to mind would be window sill insulation. But, his withdrawal is a matter of substance, which is more like construction project so there is an alternative. You can start by insulating the windows from the outside by insulating the ebb. First you need to dismantle the old ebb. To do this, we twist all the screws with which it is attached, and carefully remove the piece of iron itself.

When working on high floors, be extremely careful and use insurance.

We are interested in the seam between the frame and the window opening. It is sealed with mounting foam - a material that is easily affected by cold and moisture. Therefore, if the foam was not reliably protected, the reason for blowing may be precisely in it.

Look at the layer of foam under the frame. If:

  • The foam itself crumbles
  • There is no vapor barrier

The seam is in need of repair.

Carefully scrape off the layer of old foam with a knife. Prime the remains of the old layer and the entire surface and cover it with a new vapor barrier membrane. It is necessary to bring one edge of the membrane under the frame, and lay the other under the ebb. Apply a new layer of foam. From the outside, the foam can be protected with PSUL tape.

On this, the sealing of the outer seam, which can be a source of cold, can be considered complete

Creating another camera

Among the three reasons for blowing through metal-plastic windows mentioned at the beginning of the article was a glazing bead. To insulate this element, special films are used. It creates, as it were, another air pocket between the glass and the film itself, which levels out all blowing between the glass and the frame. Thanks to this, a single-glazed window becomes a two-chamber.

How to insulate double-glazed windows in this way?

Film - a good option when insulation was needed "yesterday". In this article, we only, in general, discuss all the ways that allow us to carry out the insulation of plastic windows with our own hands, but in a separate article we discussed this topic in more detail.

External insulation

How to insulate plastic windows from the outside? There are two key points here:

  • Firstly, in an apartment on a floor above the second, it is forbidden by law to insulate something from the outside - a special license is needed. You can insulate windows yourself only in the house or on the first or second floors of the apartment.
  • It is better to entrust such work to professionals.
  • Secondly, when we talk about external window insulation, we are talking about the insulation of slopes and the insulation of the seam under the ebb, which we talked about above. The issue was discussed in a separate article a little earlier.

Service cost

Window insulation includes several procedures. Below in the table we give the approximate cost for the services of contractors.

Results

You probably understood how to insulate plastic windows depends on the method and approach. It may be necessary to replace the seal or use mounting foam to seal the outer seam. Insulation for plastic windows can also be a film that is glued to the frame from the inside. You can seal the seams inside with tape, well, this is already in the case of very old PVC windows. And let's repeat: how to properly insulate windows?

The first thing to find out is the cause of the heat leakage. As you remember, there are only three main ones. Although, of course, there are various unusual and unforeseen situations, especially in our area, where windows were not always installed on a sober head. Therefore, if you still have questions, use the comments or the "Question and Answer" section.

Of course, first of all, you need to remember that the period of flawless operation can be extended if you carefully handle the windows and carry out the necessary maintenance.

Among other things, you need to remember that the rubber gasket around the perimeter of the window lasts much longer if it is periodically lubricated. Repairs should be carried out best early, when it becomes clear that it is necessary.

When using certain insulating compounds, a strictly defined temperature regime is necessary for high-quality solidification. Also, it will not be superfluous to choose a dry and calm day, if possible, for repairs.

Work on filling the gaps can be done independently. In the case of outdoor work, it is recommended to work only on the first two floors on your own.

If your apartment is located above, then you need to contact a specialist. It is also not recommended to act independently when adjusting windows or replacing their parts. Of course, with sufficient experience and relevant skills, it is quite possible to do it yourself, but a professional will do the job efficiently and with a guarantee.

Ways to work to improve thermal insulation

Immediately, we note that such works can be divided into two large groups:

  1. Associated with the repair of plastic windows and the closing of existing gaps.
  2. Various additional measures.

The second section may include the following types of work:

  1. Wool blinds. If used, then their strips can be wrapped with a woolen cloth. This will go a long way in keeping you warm.
  2. Thermal film. On the inside, a special film is attached using double-sided tape. We can talk about both a single sash and the entire window. Then, over the entire surface, the film is heated with warm air from a hair dryer. The film tightly envelops the entire structure, providing high-quality thermal insulation.
  3. Use of an electric heater. This is a small square box that is mounted directly on the glass. Sometimes this is done during installation, and sometimes already during operation. We are talking about the use of a special electrical appliance, which is made specifically for this method of application.
  4. The use of curtains.

It must be remembered that if there are problems with heat conservation, then it may be necessary to insulate the joints of the window and walls or window sills. The plastic window itself does not need to be sealed. It needs to be adjusted and as a result of this it is able to fully restore its heat-insulating properties.

Where to begin?

Seal the seams - the easiest way to prevent blowing

If it is felt that heat is being passed, then first of all, it is necessary to find out the cause. If we are talking about open slots, then the easiest way is to check if there is air movement.

One common way to do this is to use a lighter. The deflection of the flame will show where the air is moving. Also, for this, you can hold your hand to feel where the air is moving.

But the latter method is less sensitive. Further actions depend on what kind of leakage occurs.

Consider the various options available:

  1. Crack under window sill. Sometimes, when, insufficient attention is paid to its junction with the wall from below. As a result, even a through gap may remain there. In this case, it must be sealed. Here another situation is possible. The gap may not be visible from the outside. In this case, holes are drilled between the frame and the window sill, through which the gap can be filled with insulating material. Then, the joint along the entire length is covered with a white opaque tape.
  2. The gap between the window and the slopes. In this situation, similar methods apply. But when repairing slopes, aesthetic requirements are much higher than in the previous case.
  3. Repair of external ebbs. If it is necessary to correct the situation on external ebbs, then special “warm mixtures” are used for this purpose. They are a special primer. Water-repellent paint is also used for this purpose.
After all seams have been foamed, the foams are removed and protected with various materials.

For the first two options, it is possible to use different placeholders:

  1. Mounting foam. It is easy to use, it hardens well, but it is sensitive to temperature changes. The last feature can lead to the destruction of the filling.
  2. Silicone sealant. It is relatively inexpensive and yet easy to use.
  3. Mineral wool. It has good thermal insulation properties.
  4. Use of Styrofoam represents the cheapest, but also the least durable and durable solution to the problem.

In the above situations general order doing the job is quite similar:

  1. We clear the place where the filling will be done, from debris and remnants of the old polyurethane foam.
  2. We wash the surface and, if possible, we degrease the working surface.
  3. We fill the discovered gaps with the filler of our choice(mounting foam, silicone sealant, mineral wool or polystyrene).
  4. Seal holes if necessary.(if any) with construction tape.

Additional adjustment and replacement of seals

The main reason for increased heat loss is the wear of rubber seals.

If no gaps were found, then it may make sense to adjust the windows. To do this, you need to check the quality of the rubber gaskets. If necessary, they must be replaced.

In some cases, gaskets may not be to blame. Plastic windows have special adjusting screws that allow for fine adjustment.

They are present in the frame from all four sides. Air leakage may be due to the fact that there has been a slight shift relative to the window frame. For this kind of work, it is best to invite a professional.

Also, accidental damage cannot be ruled out, which necessitates the replacement of certain parts of their delicate mechanism. Qualitatively, this can only be done by a professional.

One of the most common causes of plastic windows leaking is the need to replace both seals. One of them is on the glass block itself. The other one is on the frame.

Work is carried out in the following order:

  1. The window is removed from the hinges. The old seal is removed.
  2. The groove is wiped from dust and dirt and degrease.
  3. Then carefully insert the new seal with the right edge prepared in advance.
  4. Then perform similar operations for the seal which is located on the window frame.
  5. Paste a previously removed window on loops.

It must be remembered that if the seal is constantly looked after, it will significantly extend its service life.

This is done as follows:

  1. They are cleaned of dust and dirt and carefully washed.
  2. Wipe dry.
  3. Lubricate with special silicone putty (it is sold in car dealerships).

These procedures prevent the seals from drying out in hot weather and from zadubevanie in severe frosts.

Repair costs

Here are some approximate prices.

  1. Calling a Window Inspection Technician, assessing the situation and drawing up estimates - approximately 500 rubles for each window.
  2. Minimum possible cost of work- 2000 rubles.
  3. Clamps adjustment- 400 rubles for each.
  4. Seal replacement- 130 rubles per linear meter.
  5. Window hardware maintenance(disassembly, lubrication, and so on) - 800 rubles.

For independent work, the prices are as follows:

  1. The price of a sealant is 50-55 rubles per linear meter.
  2. Silicone sealant 280 ml will cost 50-160 rubles, depending on the brand.
  3. Mounting foam 500 ml can cost about 150 rubles.
  4. 340-550 rubles worth square meter heat-saving film for plastic windows.

Insulation of plastic windows- quite a difficult task. At independent work you can save a lot on your costs. But for this you need to understand well how to do it. If you don’t want to waste your energy on this, then you should invest in a specialist who will do the job efficiently and reliably.

Warmth in a house or apartment is a guarantee of comfort, coziness and well-being. To do this, we install central heating in our apartments, build underfloor heating and so on. However, it is important not only to deliver heat to the house, but also to keep it.

Most of the heat leaves our apartments through the windows, insulating which can significantly improve your living conditions in the cold season.

Let's look at quick ways to insulate both modern plastic windows and old wooden ones. Let's start with the simplest and cheapest ...

1. Do you want to insulate the window? - Wash it!

Heat leaves our apartments not only because of drafts, but also goes outside in the form of infrared radiation.

Ordinary glass, being transparent to visible radiation, has a low level of transparency to infrared rays that transmit heat.

But contaminated glass, losing transparency in the visible part of the spectrum, significantly increases it in the infrared spectrum. Therefore, to save heat, it is enough just to wash the window before the start of the cold season.

However, in the spring it also does not hurt to do this - so that less radiant heat penetrates the apartment in an already hot summer.

To wash the window inside and (required!) Outside should be a product based on ethyl or ammonia. This will allow, firstly, to clean fatty contaminants, which is especially important for the kitchen, and, secondly, to avoid stains left by salt dissolved in water, which remains after evaporation of moisture.

In addition to the glass, the frames also need to be washed - we will glue seals, heaters and so on on them. Doesn't adhere well to dirt, but falls off quickly. You do not want to re-glue the seal in the middle of winter with the windows wide open?

2. Traditional methods of window insulation

Effective way To reduce heat loss is to install a heat-shrinkable energy-saving film on the inside of the frame, parallel to the glass or double-glazed window.

This film has a double action. First, it prevents heat from escaping in the form of infrared radiation. Secondly, it creates an additional heat-insulating layer of air between itself and the glass. This usually allows you to get rid of the effect of "weeping windows".

Installing the thermal film is quite simple. On the frame, having previously cleaned and degreased it, we glue double-sided tape around the glass. The film is usually sold folded in two layers. We separate the layers among ourselves and cut the film according to the size of the glass, plus two or three centimeters from each edge.

We glue the film on the adhesive tape so that its surface covers all the glass. We try to stretch the film, but we do not pay attention to wrinkles. It is more important to ensure that the entire edge of the film "sits down" tightly on the adhesive tape without "bubbles". We direct hot air from a household hair dryer onto the film. Due to its shrink properties, the film itself will stretch and smooth out.

The view at the window with such a film, of course, is not so hot, for it is warm and dry.

New double-glazed windows do not heat. Why?

Similarly, the seal on the frame changes, after which the sash is installed in place.

The procedure for installing the sash is reverse to the order for removal:

The sash is mounted from top to bottom on the lower hinge, then the parts of the upper hinge are connected by moving away from itself, the pin, lock washer and hinge overlay are installed. We close the sash with a lock and check the quality of the work performed, testing the joint for a draft.

In order for the seal on the plastic window not to have to be changed every two to three years, this part requires proper care. It is required to clean and lubricate the seal at least once a year, but preferably twice, before the start of the cold season and at its end.

We wipe the seal on the sash and frame with a dry fleecy cloth to clean the accumulated "rel="lightbox" href="/images/stories/kvartira/7-sposobov-uteplit-okna-na-zimu_8.jpg"> mud. Then we wipe the seal with soapy water for better cleaning and degreasing and wipe it dry. We apply silicone grease to the cloth (it can be purchased at any car dealer) and rub it into the seal. This simple procedure will protect the sealant from drying out in the heat and “hardening” in the cold, allowing it to retain its qualities for a long time.

6. We insulate slopes and window sills

For some reason, some people forget that a window is not only glass, a frame and sashes, but also slopes and window sills. What's the point, from the very the best window, if from under the windowsill in full "siphon"? Of course, it is better if, along with the replacement of the window, you also replaced the slopes and window sills with modern PVC structures, however, it is precisely when installing them that the installers often “hack”, knowing that the customer will pay the main attention to the frames.

Inspect the places where the slopes adhere to the concrete. If large cracks are found, we fill them with tow or foam rubber and cover them with alabaster on top, or fill them with mounting foam, which will need to be trimmed and sanded with sandpaper after drying. We complete the sealing of cracks with construction sealant.

If the initial examination reveals nothing, conduct a more thorough test with a burning match or a wet finger. If "cold bridges" are found, it is necessary to "knock" the cladding layer. A dull sound compared to neighboring areas will indicate the presence of voids under the lining layer. In this case, we remove the cladding and seal the cracks in the manner described above. Do it really" rel="lightbox" href="/images/stories/kvartira/7-sposobov-uteplit-okna-na-zimu_9.jpg"> , follows in the warm season, because mounting foam and finishing building mixtures do not work well in the cold.

You can also make slopes yourself from inexpensive improvised materials, for example, from foam, while saving on PVC slopes and the services of installers. To do this, you will need foam panels at least three centimeters thick, foam glue (for example, "ceresite") and cement mortar.

This work, however, is not the easiest, fastest and cleanest. It is worth thinking twice about whether it would be better to invite a professional. But if you decide for yourself, then in short you will find the following:

The sides of the window opening and part of the adjacent wall should be opened to the base - brick or concrete. This is done in order to drown a layer of insulation into the wall. Here you can expect a lot of surprises, in the form of boards immured by the builders, rolls of tow and other "insulations". The holes will be impressive. There may even be a fair amount of plaster on the adjacent wall falling off, so get ready for a plaster job of the appropriate scale. To ensure reliable adhesion of the future slope to the base, you can fix the reinforcing network with dowels (plastic - so that it does not conduct cold).

After kneading the cement mortar, we apply a layer of plaster on the window opening and on the wall, to the width of the future slope (about 20 cm) from the opening. Clay can be added to the solution. This will give it additional viscosity, and it will be easier to plaster the vertical surface of the walls. We achieve a flat surface and let the plaster dry well.

However, if you are confident in the reliability of the existing layer of plaster, then you can simply carefully scrape off the wallpaper, paint or other decorative coating walls, primed and leveled with a small layer of surface putty.

"rel="lightbox" href="/images/stories/kvartira/7-sposobov-uteplit-okna-na-zimu_10.jpg"> Next, apply glue to the foam panels with a notched trowel and press the panel to the surface, holding for 10-20 seconds until the glue “sets”. First, we glue the foam to the vertical part of the wall and slopes. The seams between the panels are carefully covered with the same glue. Similarly, we install panels on the horizontal part of the slope in the window opening.

Alternatively, foam can be used. It fills the voids in the slopes well, holds firmly to the base, and the insulation itself can be securely “glued” with it. Here, only, it is a little expensive, but you need a lot of it (a large balloon for a double-leaf window may not be enough).

You can close the foam plastic with drywall, or thin plastic panels, putting them again on the glue.

I repeat, the surfaces are complex, there are many angles. Professionals use other heaters and install special facing panels. But if you need to save money or want to do everything yourself - you can try it.

7. Window insulation using Swedish technology

If the installation modern window from a PVC profile you can’t afford, or it’s not suitable for any other reason, you can insulate an ordinary wooden window using newfangled Swedish technology. Such a sonorous name was given to the technology of window insulation using the Euro-strip groove seal, swedish production, although analogues produced in Eastern Europe have already appeared on the market.

The technology requires the use of a rather specific tool, which not everyone can find. home master, and experience of handling it is needed. So for this service it is better to turn to 7 ways to insulate windows for the winter: Photo 11 "rel="lightbox" href="/images/stories/kvartira/7-sposobov-uteplit-okna-na-zimu_11.jpg"> specialists. But all work is done quickly, so the method is quite suitable if winter "suddenly crept up unnoticed."

To install the seal, the window sash must be removed. In the place where the sash fits to the frame, a groove is made with a cutter, where a tubular profile is placed with a special roller, which takes the form of a groove. Additionally, the connection is sealed with silicone sealant. If desired, insulation with a Swedish profile can also be performed inside a double frame. The balcony door is similarly insulated.

The effectiveness of such insulation is slightly better than traditional sealing, but it allows you to freely open windows and vents during the winter for ventilation.

We examined the most common ways to insulate windows that do not require major repairs. I hope our tips will help add some warmth to your life.

Wooden windows are replaced with new ones made of PVC or metal-plastic, for the reason that they lose their ability to retain precious heat in an apartment or house. When installing a double-glazed window, few people are interested in how it will behave in the future. Will it let the cold through, is it necessary to carry out insulation, how effective is it.

Many consumers are wondering how to insulate a plastic window. Like any other design, metal-plastic or plastic system has weaknesses. They act as a direct way for heat to escape from the room.

Why is it blowing? This is a question often asked by homeowners. If you are also one of them, then you should consider the main nodes and deal with design features window block. The most common places to inflate are:

  • rubber compressor;
  • the perimeter of the window frame;
  • window glazing bead;
  • window fittings.

In order to determine where the air is blowing from the plastic window, you must run your palm over the surface of the block. You can also use a lighter. The last procedure is very simple. It is similar to the previous one. The fire will be sensitive to drafts, so you can detect blowing.

Before insulating a plastic window, you can take a sheet of paper and clamp it in the sash. If you pull on the corner, you can easily pull out the sheet. In this case, we are talking about insufficient sealing of the double-glazed window. This indicates that the seal is poorly pressed against the frame.

Why is it blowing from the window

Many consumers eventually wonder why it starts to blow out of a plastic window. There can be many reasons. Among others, it should be noted:

  • installation error;
  • skewed double-glazed window;
  • physical wear of window components;
  • violation of the rules of operation.

The most common cause is an installation error. It may be due to non-compliance with technology. Sometimes it happens that the window is simply skewed. This problem remains relevant for residents wooden houses and new buildings.

Window components may experience physical wear and tear. This is especially true for rubber seals. In order not to decide over time the question of how to insulate a plastic window, you must properly operate it. The seal must be washed and treated with glycerin from time to time. Such care will prevent loss of elasticity and cracking of the material.

What can you do yourself

If you want to solve the issue of blowing, then you can replace the seals with your own hands, insulate the contours of the frame, and insulate the window opening and window sill. It is necessary to do this work before the onset of cold weather. This is due to more comfortable conditions for work, optimal humidity, material requirements, lack of drafts and reduced risk of getting a cold. When it is warm outside, you can perform not only outdoor, but also internal insulation.

If you are thinking about the question of how to insulate a plastic window, then first you need to choose a material. For this, they are usually used:

  • mounting foam;
  • mineral wool;
  • Styrofoam;
  • expanded polystyrene.

The first option allows you to fill all the voids around the perimeter of the opening. This approach will eliminate the movement of air. Foam is 90% air, so it will be an excellent insulation. But in a frozen state, it must be protected from ultraviolet radiation, low and high temperatures.

Mineral wool will be an excellent solution for thermal insulation of internal slopes and window sills. It has a limited range of use for insulation. As for the foam, it is widely used for slope insulation. Rigid insulation is advisable to use when the thickness of the mounting seam is not more than 3 mm. In all other cases, it is better to purchase mineral wool.

If you want to resolve the issue of how to insulate plastic windows for the winter, you can consider silicone sealant. It will eliminate the blowing between the elements of the double-glazed window. Dry mixes for slopes are also widely used. With their help, you can also carry out thermal insulation from the outside. But if you purchase construction tape, then it will need to be glued on top of the sealant. Sometimes it is used as an independent heater.

Preparation for thermal insulation of the window unit

In order to insulate the window block, it is necessary to prepare:

  • sealant;
  • sealant;
  • construction tape;
  • heat-saving film.

The latter is also called energy saving. in a great way thermal insulation will be mechanical methods. This should include adjusting fittings.

External slope insulation

Quite often, owners of houses and apartments are wondering how to properly insulate the slopes of plastic windows. The first step on the way to improving the thermal insulation properties of the structure is the displacement of the dew point. This will eliminate the appearance of dampness and the development of fungus.

You can cover up the cracks, but this measure will be temporary, since over time the plaster will crack and open the mounting foam. The latter, under the influence external factors will start to break down. Plaster can cover the insulation, protecting the layer from atmospheric phenomena.

First you need to prepare a hard insulation and clean the surface of the slopes from protruding parts and dirt. The base is primed. A heater is installed on the adhesive solution or foam. It is better to use foam, as it eliminates the need for wet work and sets in a short time. With it, you can strengthen the insulation sheet as firmly as possible.

If you are faced with the task of how to insulate the slopes of plastic windows, then you will need to seal all the cracks with glue, install a perforated corner, a polymer mesh and finish the surface with plaster. When installing a layer of thermal insulation, it is necessary to ensure that the material overlaps part of the window frame and protects the mounting seam.

Thermal insulation of ebbs

If you want to insulate the ebbs, then it will be enough to fill the gaps with foam or place heat-insulating material inside. In order to protect it from contact with moisture, it is necessary to mount a metal ebb bar on top. It is at an angle of 5°. The horizontal edge must extend beyond the facade by 30 mm. The side edges are wrapped up. The place where the bar will adjoin the surfaces must be treated with a sealant.

Internal thermal insulation

If you are among those who want to insulate a plastic window inside, then you should take care of the slopes, which are not so strongly influenced by external factors, but can still become a place through which heat escapes. It is important to keep the slopes aesthetically attractive.

First you need to process the cracks, remove dirt and old foam. A primer is applied to the surface. The slots are filled with mounting foam. Its excess after drying should be removed. Next, thermal insulation materials are installed. They can be cotton wool or polystyrene. The next step is to install drywall. It is important to finish its surface by covering it with putty and painting.

Window sill thermal insulation

If you want to insulate plastic windows for the winter with your own hands, then you can also do a window sill. The gaps between it and the wall are a place of significant heat loss. Before starting work, it is important to determine weakness this part of the window block. Blowing can be between parts of the window and the window sill.

IN this case sealant is usually used. Heat can go to the place between the wall and the window sill. In this case, thermal insulation should be carried out before installing the window sill by laying an insulating layer. After finishing installation work distance between concrete or brick wall and window sill can be filled with foam.

Warming by adjustment method

If you want to resolve the issue of how to insulate plastic windows with your own hands, then you can act in a comprehensive manner. For this, in addition to the above methods, adjustment is usually used. You can eliminate the skew of the sash.

Some property owners change the seal. You can do it yourself. old material is pulled out, and a new one is installed in the groove. Before that, you must decide which sealant to choose. After reviewing the assortment, you will understand that black and gray seals are on sale. The former are more plastic, while the light shade is due to the presence of additives that reduce the price and worsen the properties. The material is not so tight at the moment of pressing.

Alternative ways

If you still cannot decide for yourself the question of how you can insulate plastic windows with your own hands, then you can use simpler methods. To do this, many use thick curtains that retain the ability to retain heat indoors. Sometimes improvised means are also used, but some of them can ruin appearance double-glazed window.

As a heater are used:

  • window tape;
  • soaked paper;
  • foam rubber;
  • strips of white fabric.

You can purchase heat-saving film, which is also called energy-saving. It is glued to the sash. It is important to exclude the formation of air bubbles and the formation of folds. The film can reduce heat loss by 75%.

If you want to understand how to properly insulate plastic windows, you can use electric heating. In this case, a heating cable is located around the double-glazed window, which will heat the spiral. Sometimes an oil cooler is installed on the window. The most technologically advanced method is the electric heating of a double-glazed window.

You can install heated windows. This technique is used at the production stage. It provides for the installation of a conductive film on the inside of the glass. It is transparent and contains conductive threads. In this case, the glass is heated from the inside. If you still have not decided how to insulate plastic windows for the winter, you can use an integrated approach. It is the most appropriate in a private house or apartment, as it allows you to eliminate possible causes of heat leakage.

Using a special tool

For insulation, you can use the method of adjusting the pressure of the valves. For this, an eccentric is used. Elements are installed around the perimeter. To ensure a tight clamp, the eccentric scrolls clockwise. There are risks on the elements. When they are facing the street, this indicates a weakening of the pressure. If the pointer is facing the seal, you will ensure that the sash is well pressed against the structure.

It is also important to pay attention to the loops. They have their own mechanism. It provides grip. When adjusting the device, you will need to use a hex key. By sliding the tongue, you can ensure a snug fit of the sash. To extend, turn the hex counterclockwise. When the loop is on the right, the rotation is carried out in the other direction - clockwise. It is very easy to eliminate the skew of the valves.

Finally

Now you know how to insulate the slopes of plastic windows inside. For an integrated approach, it is necessary to pay attention to the window sill. Experts do not recommend other works on thermal insulation.

You should also be prepared for the fact that insulation can adversely affect the ventilation in the room. Full tightness is not only protection from cold, but also fogging of glasses, which causes the destruction of slopes and the occurrence of fungus.
